1st question :

Does anyone know anyway I can save an screen image in Linux environment for teaching
purposes.

2nd question :
I happen to know there is a software that can emulate Windows in Linux but I have
forgotten the actual name. Can anyone share the name of the product perhaps.

Thank You Very Much.

Hi
If you have a serial terminal, you have to run a getty on your serial
port. Have a look at the Text-Terminal-HOWTO.

Hi
Try setting it to 0.
All non-zero values evaluate to TRUE, zero evaluates to FALSE.

Not if your network connection is insecure in any way. At 'home' it may be
all right, but most of the time you want any connection which has passwords

SVGAtextmode (or stm as it's commonly abbreviated) is the most flexible.

Dear reader,

i'm using linux for about one year now and i'm asking myself: is there
something better? Linux is much faster and reliable than Windows Operating
systems, but now i'm reading about the BSD operating systems i would like
to have some information about the differences between them (OpenBSD,
FreeBSD, NetBSD, Linux and maybe Solaris (is solaris free?)) at the
following subjects:

1. speed
2. reliability
3. networkingspeed
4. hardware support
5. amount of MB needed for installation
6. availability of desktop applications (netscape, licq, pine, slrn, xanim and
so on)
7. security

I hope someone can tell me more about these other operating systems or can send
me an URL.

much thanks in advance,

Martin

Get the Gimp. As a side effect, you get an excellent graphic program.

It should be with your distribution.

I guess you mean Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator)
It's far from perfect, but some windows programs run nice with it.

If you have a fast machine with lot of ram and some spare money, VMWare may be
what you want. It can run a complete Windows installation under Linux.

I believe it's because of the licence term by University of
Washington prevents distribution of binary or something
similar. In Debian, I need to download the source package,
compile, and install my own .deb package. If my suspicion
is right, I guess you need to do the same with Redhat.

Very recomendably!
Actually you can install on/in FAT partition. Slackware has zip files
which contain whole working distro to be unzipped on DOS/Windows file
system.
Those are for "window shopping" as they don't perform optimally, neither
speed nor hardware usage (GUI in basic 640x480 256 colors).
Swap files - lets say that they are a must for newbie, when you become a
super-guru then you decide for yourself.
No recomendations on distros, whichever you chose - learn to administer
it, sounds more scary than it is but once over the steep learning start
things are easy.

Hello,

I'm trying to install my isdn card, but i ran into a lot of
problems. My
card wasn't supported by i4l so I got the modules from the manufacturer,
and
placed them into the right directory "/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc". The
modules are compiled for the kernel 2.2.12 but they may be loaded with
higher kernels acoording to the manufacturer. BTW, my card is an ASUSCOM
P-IN100-ST-D ( a pci card). There were two modules: isdn.o en hisax.o.

   I loaded isdn.o with the command "#insmod -f isdn.o", I got a warning
about the version, but the module was loaded. But when I try to load the
hisax module ("#insmod -f hisax.o") I got the following error

Warning: kernel-module version mismatch
hisax.o was compiled for kernel version 2.2.12
while this kernel is version 2.2.12-20

hisax.o: init_module: Device or resource busy

The problem could be an IRQ conflict, in Winblows I have to disable one
of
serial ports.

I disabled both the serieal ports in BIOS(AWARD) and I disabled
PnP-OS.

Also when I do a depmod -a I get the following errors

   /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/dss1_divert.o : unresolved symbol(s)
   /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/pcbit.o : unresolved symbol(s)

I started playing with postfix finally a couple weeks ago. It's a very
nice package, and Wietse and friends have done an amazingly cool job
with it. The only reason I have sendmail running it all is that I like
per-user filters at the SMTP stage, which, alas, only sendmail is able
to do as far as I can tell.

That works but isn't ideal. I did that a number of years ago on a
dialup and found that mailing my parents at AOL was a crap shoot:
sometimes AOL's mail server wouldn't respond in a timely manner when I
was online, so my mail would eventually end up in my mailbox. The
'smarthost' feature is ideal for this sort of thing for that reason.

Well, you should do that anyway (see above for why sending mail from a
box without fulltime connectivity isn't ideal), but it won't fix your
problem.

> Of course, if there's a better way to do this, I'm all ears.

Step 1: configure postfix to use your ISP as a smarthost (ie, have your
box play dumb and send non-local mail to your ISP). This is the
'relayhost' variable.

Step 2: fix your headers so that you have a valid return address (you do
want to get your bounces so that you know when you typo'd an address,
right?). I do this with Mutt and Postfix is happy to believe me.
The 'helo' address (which you show in the received line above) should
be a valid hostname, but anyone using that as a spam check is losing
lots of mail, as it is very often not valid. The check you're failing
in is the return envelope ('MAIL FROM:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>' in the SMTP
stage).

Yes! Many, many thanks.

The net works (I.e., post a question - get an answer!)

(Usually, it doesn't work so well, but when it does, it's beautiful...)

I need to know if there is a port of Windows media player to Linux or
anything that emulates it. I'm wanting it so that I can stream audio from
online radio stations and most of them require Windows Media Player.

Subject: Requirements for writing an operating system...
Date: Tue, 27 Jun 2000 00:18:24 GMT

Hi There

I am a linux newbie and I am very much fascinated with the Linux Kernel. And
Linus Torvalds is a role model for me because I too want to write my own OS
one day.

I am still in school and I know quite a lot of stuff in computers but I am
just curious about what are the requirements in order to write an OS. Can
anyone out there advise me please? Reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

this apmd is in the D state. doesn't that mean waiting for data from
some IO device? perhaps this is stuck and causing your load of 1.
this is just a wild guess from the earlier comment about IO. maybe
i have no idea what i am talking about. please correct me if so.
