dear steve !
not sure, but kde seems to expect .xpm - files /bitmap.
try to convert your icon to bitmap and rename it ending in .xpm !

Simply put: It is an operating system. More accurately: It is the core
of an operating system. To have a working OS, you need a kernel and a
bunch of utilities and setup files. The utilities (basic commands and
such) commonly used with Linux are provided by GNU (www.gnu.org). Even
though the Linux/GNU combination is not officially Unix(tm), it is in
all practical cases a Unix clone. You can compile and run almost any
program designed for Unix on a Linux machine.

Hell, just get a motherboard with onboard video, and you don't even need to
futz around finding a cheap video card.

A video card is $10 or so. That's all you need. Most BIOSes can be
set to ignore keyboard errors (including a lack of a keyboard), and
whether you have a monitor connected to the video card or not doesn't
make a different.

Someone probably hacked the login program in my Linux system and it
doesn't record te remote host address for a remote telnet login in the
"wtmp" file. I recompiled the login program but the problem persists.
Any idea what else I should check to solve the problem.

Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 11:25:42 GMT
In the process of recovering from an XFree86 debacle. which included
upgrading to version 3.3.3.1, I apparently have hosed up my 'rpm'
database.
I am apparently now missing some X libraries as well as fvwm and
netscape. When I try to install them, 'rpm' tells me they are already
installed. If I try to erase them, 'rpm' tells me they are NOT
installed. I tried --rebuildb to fix this as well a installing with
--force as well as trying upgrade.
Can someone tell me how to clean this mess up and force rpm to
properly reinstall the packages. I also may need help figuring out
which packages to reinstall. Is there a way to get 'rpm' to print a
list of installed packages? I could not find one in the man pages.
TIA.

Did you 'make config' or 'make xconfig' first? And what soundcard are you
using? I compiled 2.2.0 onto RH5.1 with no trouble at all. The sound code
used to be a real pain in 2.0.x if you had an SB AWE64, but even that was
painless.

Hi - in general the used memory will go up as buffers are used - if you
write a small c program to allocate more memory than is "free" you will see
the amount of memory in buffers/caches will go down.
in the perfect world there is no free memory - all is used efficiently to
buffer or hold data
linux keeps the unused (free) memory to a minimum all the time
you can use "free", "top" or "vmstat" or "cat /proc/meminfo" to get info on
memory usage
have fun!

You need the rockridge extensions to the iso9660
so with mkisofs -
mkisofs -o music.raw -R -T /data/musicdir
the -R tells mkisofs to add the rockridge extensions,
the T is a lookup table in case you are on a platform that does not read
iso9660
To be honest I don't know for sure (and I don't care - for sure!) about
windows and iso9660 - but this will work fine under linux and digital
unix, I have done it before...
good luck
Rob
ps you dont need the -T is ssytem handles rockridge - and I think the
trans.tbl makes cd's look ugly.
but then again I also think Elton John is doing the same thing 8-P Red

That's a sort of lazy attitude towards coding. If you can code something
fast and lean, why wouldn't you code it fast and lean?
That said, given that KDE is several interoperable but separable
applications, one could use one but not the others. Cool does not have to
be fat.

If it's a real filesystem, mount can usually figure it out.
If it isn't, try:
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/tmp/header count=1 bs=1k
file /tmp/header
This can identify a tarfile, a filesystem, a kernel image, gzipped data and
various other things it might be. IIRC, file(1) doesn't look at more than the
first block.

InternetWeek February 08, 1999, Issue: 751 Section: Intranet Applications
=============================================================================
--- Database Appliance Leaves The Gate Ellis Booker
Just three days after announcing that Hewlett-Packard would be the first
hardware maker to manufacture his company's "database appliance," Oracle chief
executive Larry Ellison demonstrated a working model.
Last year at Comdex, Ellison revealed plans for a database server composed of
a minimized operating system tightly integrated with Oracle's database
software. The architecture, then code-named Raw Iron, is now known as the
Oracle Database Appliances. Oracle subsequently chose a scaled-down version
of the Solaris operating system from Sun Microsystems.
To demonstrate the advantages of the platform, the demo last week showed the
appliance running nearly three times faster than a server with Oracle8i
running atop Windows NT on identical HP hardware.
Current Oracle customers seem eager to try the database appliance, which will
be available first from HP this summer. An introductory single-processor
server will sell for $7,500.
"I would believe easily it could be two times faster," said Eugene Weinstein,
database development manager at SegaSoft Networks Inc., an online game
provider. "I'm excited about this."
Weinstein hopes the device will save him money by obviating the need to
license a general-purpose operating system-and make the server easier to
manage.
And Weinstein figures Oracle's database appliances will minimize or even
eliminate the finger-pointing that now goes on among Oracle, the server
hardware maker and the operating system vendor when there is a problem.
Analyst Merv Adrian of the Giga Information Group agreed that customers are
looking to simplify administration of their database servers, and noted that
more than half of Oracle's customers already dedicate their servers to the
database alone.
"When you think about a four-way box running a database on top of NT, there is
a lot of stuff [related to NT] you don't really want to worry about," Adrian
said. Even if the appliances do not do away with all these OS-specific
administrative tasks, they will be handled via the Oracle database interface
rather than the OS interface, Adrian said.
Dell Computer also will produce a database appliance. And Oracle's Ellison
confirmed last week that Oracle8i, which was expected at the end of last year,
will not ship until March 1.

the Solaris operating system

Pretty cool eh? What OS do you think Dell will use for their appliance? How
long do you think it'll be before we see a database appliance running on
Linux? Not long I bet, since Oracle already supports Linux!
NT, your days are numbered.
