Subject: ncpmount fails
Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 21:31:14 GMT

I'm attempting to mount a Novell server on my linux (2.2.2) filesystem.
I have ipx and ncpfs support as modules, and after configuring IPX as
described in the IPX-HOWTO, slist shows me a correct list of servers.
I've created a directory, /mnt/server_name and, while trying to get
things working, I've given it permissions 777. I've used the following
command line:

ncpmount -S SERVER_NAME /mnt/server_name -U myusername

and this brings up a password prompt. When I enter my valid password on
SERVER_NAME (which works fine under Windows95, running as a VMware guest
OS), I get an "Operation not permitted" error. If I do the same thing
as root, I get "mount failed".

So, at least one problem apparently has to do with permissions. I've
made ncpmount suid root; is there something else I should do? Do I need
an entry in fstab?

Regarding the "mount failed", I've done dmesg, and that tells me:
ncp_read_super: kernel requires mount version 3

I've looked on rpmfind and elsewhere, and the only mount-related rpm's
I've been able to find are version 2.9. Can anyone point me to a version
3 rpm? Or suggest something else I can do to get this working?

Thanks,

Hey

I own a voodoo banshee video card and I think this is the cause for my
problem with X-windows when it starts.

I've only run linux like twice since instaling red hat 6.0 and would
really apreciate it if someone could help me out here.

The thing is, I choose 640 by 480, the lowest resolution during the
configuration (or install if you wanna call it ) part.

but on starting X-windows, my screen is i think a quarter of what it
should be, and I cannot move it up or down at all. the only thing I can
do is drag the taskbar for some apps to the right and close it.
and I cannot see most of my apps/anything anyways as the screen size is
so small and doe'snt display a lot of the actual window.

Plz help.
thanx

NetGear FA310TX. Works like a champ under both Warp and Linux. Be careful though,
there are 2 flavors of the FA310TX floating around. You want the original which
features the DEC 214xx chipset, not the newer FA310TX which has a PNIC chipset.
Fortunately the FA310TX packaging has a window so you can actually see the NIC's
chipset. I bought a pair on sale at CompUSA for $29 each. Not bad for a 100 Mbps
PCI NIC. You should be able to get them somewhere at this price, just remember
to ask for the DEC 214xx chipset if you're not buying retail.

I installed Solaris 7 and RedHat 6.0 (2.2.5 kernel). I tried to mount
Solaris partitions using ufstype=sun, but it doesn't work. I noticed
that I cannot see the slices of the big solaris partition at boot up.
Does that mean I have to recomplie the kernel so it can recongize
solaris x86 partitions? Thanks a lot for any help.

Why on earth would Intel care!? Selling two celerons is better than
selling one. A person who has to go celeron for SMP more than likely
could not afford PII/III SMP in the first place so it is not like Intel
would be forcing them to the more expensive CPU. They would just be
losing the sale of 1 cpu.

I know this a misc group I for one don't like announce stuff here and I
don't really think its appropriate as we have groups for this very purpose.

Subject: serial module problem
Date: Fri, 09 Jul 1999 18:26:12 -0400

I'm running RH6.0 with kernel 2.2.9.
I compiled serial.o into the kernel and ppp and the modem work fine. The
isapnp configures the modem, the sound
card, but for some misterious reason it fails to configure the midi
device. That's ok, I can live without that. Also, I see
a "Can't find module char-major-5" in /var/log/messages, and I believe
it's gpm that's still looking for serial.o,
although, as I said, I compiled it into the kernel.

Last night, however, I recompiled the same 2.2.9 with serial.o as a
module. Since then I got this extremely weird
problem. I reboot. When I dial the first time (either as root or as
mortal user)
all is well. I see the right modules load:

I don't know exactly what the setup you want is, but here is mine and
it sounds like what you want:

1. Anonymous users can upload to /home/ftp/incoming, but not download
from it.

2. Anonymous users can download from /home/ftp/pub, but not upload to
it.

3. Via FTP, native users (people with accounts on the system) cannot
upload to /home/ftp/incoming, but can download from it.

4. Via FTP, native users can upload and download to/from
/home/ftp/pub.

5. Logged on the system, native users can copy files from
/home/ftp/incoming, but not copy files to it.

6. Logged on the system, native users can copy files to/from
/home/ftp/pub.

Here's how I did it:

1. /home/ftp permissions

drwxrwxr-x 2 root ftp 1.0k Jul 9 18:35 incoming
dr-xr-xrwx 2 root ftp 1.0k Jul 9 18:42 pub

2. Pertinent section in /etc/ftpaccess

upload /home/ftp * no
upload /home/ftp /incoming yes ftp users 066 nodirs

3. Pertinent secion in /etc/inet.conf

ftp stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd
in.ftpd -l -a -t300 -T600 -u022

(Please note the -u parameter above...)

What this allows me to do is have anonymous drop files for my users in
/home/ftp/incoming, without risk of other anonymous users getting the
file, but allowing anyone on the system to pick them up.

It also allows my users to drop files into the /home/ftp/pub
subdirectory for others on the system, any anonymous user out there,
or themselves to pick up.

Sorry for the long post. I thought the level of detail was necessary.

I think I may have gotten past that problem and found a new one. It's now
asking for other packages that are already installed. I'm getting
frustrated fast. I will keep trying different thing and see what happens.
I will keep you posted. Thanks

I've installed Mandrake 6.0 w/ a Logitech PS/2 mouse no problem. If
only nfsd worked...

How about cutting out comp.os.linux.misc and replace it with
comp.os.linux.announce

I know this a misc group I for one don't like announce stuff here and I
don't really think its appropriate as we have groups for this very purpose.

Thanks,

I have a Intel L440GX+ motherboard that is more designed for a server and
doesn't have an AGP slot. I use a Nokia 446 Xpro 19" monitor at 1600x1200
resolution, 32 bits/pixel color depth and 82Hz refresh rate (I used to use
85Hz, but my Cybex SwitchView monitor switcher doesn't like that high of a
refresh rate. The video card I used is a Diamond Viper 550, which comes in
both AGP and PCI versions. It uses the TNT-1 chipset, and XFree86 3.3.3.1
supports it just fine. Note, you will have to upgrade your X server to 3.3.3.1
as the default shipped with RedHat 5.2 did not support the tnt chipset. You
want to use the SVGA server. Note, I would buy it fairly soon, since S3 just
bought Diamond, and I would have to imagine there will be some pressure to use
S3 chips instead of the TNT chips.

At one point, Matrox was making PCI versions of the G200, but when this
computer was built in the March time frame, the system builder couldn't find a
PCI G200 anywhere. The older Millenium-II was a nice PCI video card. Whether
you could find it is another question at this point.

The only other thought is the ATI cards, but I've heard that they don't do high
bandwidth situations well. Note, I've never used an ATI card, so I can't say
whether this is true or not.

xf86config prompts you if you want virtual screen or not when you choose the
modes.
XF86Config doesn't do that.

I believe those are inodes that were not linked to any file. It happened to
me too. Data that is written to disk, is normally ok. What happens is that
when some file is being written to disk and the crush occurs, then linux
doesn't get to finish the writing or the accounting (it has to keep track
where everything is) and pieces of the unfinished files will be found on
the disk. You should be ok. Just check your files to see if you're not
missing any.

Have you got the following in your .mc file?

MASQUERADE_AS(`whatever.co.uk')
FEATURE(`masquerade_envelope')
FEATURE(`allmasquerade')
