Welcome to the wonderful world of cheap IDE drives.

The whole system "jitters", because while the drives are transferring data,
interrupts are disabled. So, since the system can't get the interrupt from
the serial port for the mouse, the pointer appears to jitter.

If you were using a modem at the time of the "jitters", you'd find that you're

isn't that a cd-image?
simply all the info on a prospective/hypothetical compact disk?
and ISO-something would be the "filesystem" (if that's the correct

I have caldera 2.3, with a recompiled kernel 2.2.14
I have PPP compiled internal to the kernel and not as a module.

Root can access the internet fine.
when a regular user tries to access the internet with kppp an error
message is generated about ppp not available in the kernel or the module
can't be found. A regular user can't run kppp but if he runs pppd and
lets it try to negotiate ppp while there is no connection and fail, kppp
will then work.

I can also log in as a regular user, open a shell, then su to root and
start everthing fine. I know that there has to be something not passing
the right permissions but I just can't find it. Here are how my kppp
and pppd files are set.

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 371796 Aug 10 1999 /opt/kde/bin/kppp
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 139768 Aug 10 1999 /usr/sbin/pppd

I have used the chmod u+s on both of them (logged in as root).
I am out of idea's.

Hello. I've got a severe problem with WordPerfect 8. I'm running
RedHat Linux 6.1, Kernel 2.2.14. My problem is that when I print a
document from WordPerfect, the words come out smushed together. The
beginning of each word is superimposed on the end of the last one. It's
really annoying...does anyone know how to fix this, or even what might
cause it? Thanks.

In step 3, you selected a custom install, and apparently you have failed
to check all the Xwindow components.
Step 4 obviously did not take into account all Xwindow related components.
I suggest you reinstall RH6.1 and if you decide to do a custom install, then
make
sure all Xrelated components are selected.

Subject: HELP! Can't reboot w/ new glibc!
Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 18:34:48 -0500

This is really frustrating. I installed glibc v2.1.3 on a RH 6.1 Linux, and
no matter where I install it (prefix of /usr/local or /opt/glibc-2.1.3 as I
usually do it), when I reboot, there are some library files which remain
open (verified with lsof). This means umount can't un-mount /usr or /opt
(depending on where it's installed). The /etc/rc.d/rc6.d/S01reboot script
gets stuck and the system sits there.

Can anyone provide any suggestions?

Hm. Could a loaded module be using glibc? Perhaps I could unload this module
before the umount command? How would I go about finding out which module
this is?

Thanks,
js.

I use mtx as in:
        mtx load 1
        mtx unload

You can grab 'mtx-1.1.tar.gz' from "ftp://dandelion.com/".

My guess is that you're using an HP WordPerfect driver for a printer
that's not quite properly matched to your printer. My suggestion is to
switch to a PostScript driver (like the QMS magicolor if this is a color
printer) and print via a normal Linux printer queue, that can parse
PostScript. I've got more information on this topic on my web page:

Do you mean simpy "allow you to connect with Linux" or "their support staff
know Linux"? If the first, then the ukgateway.net, frgateway.net,
degateway.net (you get the idea...) support (i.e. allow) CHAP connections
from any OS, and telinco.co.uk actually have some info about configuring
your setup to talk on the 'Net (www.telinco.co.uk). But if you're not in
the UK, this is probably of very limited appeal :-(

As for support staff knowing Linux? Can't help there... But with enough
demand, who knows WHAT we can get them to do.;-)

Pure guess here, but I would look to see if your printer has a copy
of the font you are using... if so, you migth be seeing a problem where
WP is looking at the local font, say Courier, and the printer is printing
with its copy of Courier, but they are not the same Courier.... the font
metrics may be different.

You can try printing a hosed paragraph with a different font, and see
what that does.

df will tell you how much free space (and used space) is on each of your
mounted partitions. df -h makes it a little easier to read.

du will tell you how much disk space is being used by your current
directory, and all sub directories, again du -h is a little nicer

for more info on each of them type
man du
and
man df

This makes no sense. If you want to read ntfs under Linux, then you need
support for this in the kernel. Either as a module or as compiled in.
