Hi foobarians,

I've heard so many linux sites, books, and even email messages that
contain this phrase...??? What the heck is foo bar...???? The weird
thing is that it also makes its presence in the movie "Saving Private
Ryan", but they never define the term... Hmmm..... Ha...

Thanks,

Subject: TurboLinux Installation ERRORS!!! Help! maybe partitioning problems
Date: Thu, 29 Jun 2000 00:10:14 -0700

I've decided to enter the Linux world by purchasing TurboLinux
Workstation but so far I have not been able to get it to properly install.
I'm trying to get it to fit onto my old p100 w/1.2 gigs of space. Later on
I'll try to do the fips thing for my p3.
I'm installing it on a empty HD with no windows running on it but I
always get errors after installing it. TurboLinux support is very very weak
so any help would be greatly appreciated. Here are my general questions.

First of all, I'm unsure of what I should be doing when setting up the
partitions. What I've done everytime I've attempted to install TBLinux is
created a Linux Swap and a Regular Linux partition. I made the swap +32M
and used the rest for the regular Linux Partition, so about 1100 Megs left
for Linux.
I have few errors now during the installation, but in general there are
many flaws in the installation program, like the images for the hardware
disk 2 don't work so I can't add the files for IDE devices. I wonder if
this is a part of the problem. For any of you guru's out there here's the
error I get when loading up Linux... FYI LILO boots up fine.
=======================Beginning of
Error-----------------------------------------------------------------------

filesystem (and not a swap or ufs or something else) then the superblock is

So after this I can only do maintenance on my comp and not get X-Window to
run... and I've tried installing TBLinux 10 times or so already. Any
suggestions? I'm hoping my faith in the Linux online community can pull
through for me this time. Should I be making more then two partitions? I
kinda have a feeling I should be making partitions for /usr/var?? /etc?
I'm confused because the auto partition makes 9 partitions. Help!!! Thanks
in advance.

Rod, still I don't buy NT ever messes with MBR because NT does not need MBR
at all. If multibooting NT and Linux not using the LILO, NT OS loader likes
to have the boot sector from the other operating systems available as a
file. NT has 'boot.ini'that read like:
--
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation ...
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Windows NT Workstation ...
C:\BOOTSECT.LNX="Linux"

Where this resides? Not at MBR but at C:\ root directory with system and
hidden attributes. Try boot it with MS-DOS floppy then do at C:\ prompt:
'a:\fdisk /mbr' you can still boot either OS because MBR is not being used
at all.

Yah, the window managers are what got me going towards linux in the
first place (used GeoShell and LiteStep in windows) and I thought KDE
was the easiest for stating out (just for me), but now I really prefer
Window Maker, although Black Box is nice and >>fast<<, I just cant
handle the configuration yet.
I use KDE and GNOME apps indiscriminately, just comes down to which
app better suits me (I installed full KDE an GNOME so I have their
libraries).
If anyone has any BB advice email it please!

As a side note though very visual Enlightenment just seems too big,
maybe I just havent given it enough of a chance.

If you haven't already, check themes.org and get the coolest desktop on
your block (see wm.themes.org and be stunned by the simple beauty, and
nice dock apps too!;)

A secondary zone file is supposed to be updated from the primary
zone file. This is by design. If you want to prevent this you need
to make it a primary zone file and be authorative for the entire zone.
Just make sure your modified name server is not reachable from outside,
or you might create trouble for this zone. You also need to make sure
that your zone file is complete for this zone; there is no forwarding
to any other name server if the name in this zone is not found localy.

Because the echo command receives two words and echos them with one
space in between. Try this

echo "$TODAY"

in double quotes, that is, and see how many spaces you realy have
in $TODAY

The correct Acronym is actually FUBAR, foobar being the correct
pronunciation.

It seems to be a fairly international term, widely used in the IT industry
here in the UK!!

I now noticed that the root disk is an IDE disk. In this case, just
load the scsi driver from an rc script, for example /etc/rc.d/rc.modules.

You need initrd to load scsi module only if your root file system is on
an SCSI disk.

I like to use gkrellm when in X. It's a pretty featureful process viewer,
and allows you to view a multiprocessor environment as displays of all the
single processors and/or as a single display of all the processors, if
that makes any sense ....

check it out, you'll see what I mean.

I've tried Mandrake 7.0 and SUSE 6.4, and can only get a text version of
Linux running on my PC (Tiny Pentium III 600Mhz, the Chipset and
graphics are Intel 810). It has a 17Gb HDD which is now back to being
Primary running Win 98 Sr2. Ideally I would like to split this into 2
(approx 8Gb each for Win98 & Linux). I can Partition magic this okay,
although Boot Magic v1 has a problem, when I select Linux, it just keeps
rebooting. When I did have it working, as I say it was Text only.
Even the install programs are Text based, YAST2 according to the manual
I have should be graphical, but it does not come up as shown. I use the
graphical version of YAST.
Mandrake does not have the monitor in the list, every option I try the
screen looks too big.

I am unsure if because the machine is so new, the Linux installs do not
recognise the hardware.

Has anyone managed this successfully on a similar specced machine, or is
it worth me trying another version of Linux (Corel, etc)

Thanks for any help.

You're in for a very long, hard road, because your CDROM is connected
through the soundcard, and not a traditional IDE channel. You would
save yourself many hours of grief by getting a normal IDE CDROM drive.

I always copy the .config file from the old kernel tree to the new one, cd into
the new tree and run
make oldconfig
this asks you every new kernel option to be set. Then I run
make menuconfig
or
make xconfig
to check the configuration.
this works fine for me. I just upgraded to 2.2.16, no probs.
