Subject: Linux & faxes
Date: Tue, 16 Feb 1999 22:54:42 GMT
I work for a company that takes a lot of orders via FAX. We normally have
three large fax machines that handle all of the FAX traffic. However, a
couple of times each year, they have promotions that last for a few days,
during which time, the three fax machines get overloaded. Rather than buy
additional fax machines, management's decision has been to take faxes via
some existing modems/computers, since this only happens a couple of times
each year.
Anyway, I've had to do this about four times now over the last year and a half
using Win95, and I've had it! Can you say CRASH?!?!?!? I had two win95
machines each with one modem taking faxes last friday using WinFax pro. I had
to babysit them practically all night (until the promotion ended) to make sure
they kept running.
I've told management that FAX machines would be the best way to go, but they
just don't want to spend the extra money for something that would only be
used a few days out of the year, and no matter how much I try to convince
them, they won't believe that computers don't take faxes as well as fax
machines. As a result I think I'm going to try to get a Linux box configured
for this kind of thing before the next onslaught. I've used Linux
extensively before for print/file servers, and I love it for its stability,
but I've never used it for faxing before.
Here's what I'm thinking: I'll install Linux on an old 486DX2-66 that I have
laying around, connect two faxmodems to it (one to each of the two COM
ports), and let it take faxes, automatically spitting them out to a printer.
Has anyone had experience running two faxmodems (connected to different
lines) simultaneously on the same Linux box? Will it work? Will a 66 MHz
486 (12 MB RAM) be up to this task? I'm thinking it can't be worse than
Windoze.
TIA
Craig

OK now I'm sure the server is a separate machine. Then the answer is simple:
run Samba on the Linux box. The NT server will be able to see the files on the

This is a straight file sharing issue which is in fact solved.

Can anyone recommend a good mail client for Linux. I would like one
which supports multiple POP3 accounts and which allows you to leave the
messages on the server. I am currently using kmail which does allow
multiple POP3 accounts but the leave mail on server feature is broken.
Each time you check for mail it downloads everything regardless of
whether you've got it already. This feature works fine in Netscape but
it can only support one POP3 account.
I was thinking about trying to install balsa (the GNOME mail client) -
does anyone know if it is any good and if it supports these features?
Or are there any other good mail clients out there?
I would appreciate replies by email. Thanks very much in advance.

FWIW, here's that clause from my Win95 manual:
<legal bumpth>
MICROSOFT (R) WINDOWS (R) 95
IMPORTANT -- READ CAREFULLY: This End-User License Agreement ("EULA") is
a legal agreement between you (either an individual or a single entity)
and the manufacturer ("PC Manufacturer") of the computer system
("COMPUTER") with which you acquired the Microsoft software product(s)
identified above ("SOFTWARE PRODUCT" or "SOFTWARE"). If the SOFTWARE
PRODUCT is not accompanied by a new computer system, you may not use or
copy the SOFTWARE PRODUCT. The SOFTWARE PRODUCT includes computer
software, the associated media, any printed materials, and any "online"
or electronic documentation. By installing, copying or otherwise using
the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, you agree to be bound by the terms of this EULA.
</legal bumpth>
<"Refund" clause>
If you do not agree to the terms of this EULA, PC Manufacturer and
Microsoft are unwilling to license the SOFTWARE PRODUCT to you. In such
event, you may not use or copy the SOFTWARE PRODUCT, and you should
promptly contact PC manufacturer for instructions on return of the
unused product(s) for a refund.
</"Refund" clause>
I had a quick look at the UK warranty for Win95 and it is NULL AND VOID
because it fails to mention statutory rights. What a shame.

Hi Richard,
I'm using xfmail (check out freshmeat for a link) wich should be able to do
all of the things you're looking for. It also supports IMAP. I doesn't look

Subject: Novice Help: Modem Gone Undetected?
Date: 17 Feb 1999 01:14:30 GMT
Ho-kay.
Yesterday I blanked my harddrive and installed Linux. I have a Compaq
Presario with an AMD-k6 200mHz (233?). Everything's gone just swimmingly,
including the Video card and all that djazz. Except the modem. Usernet,
when used to dial a PPP connection blinks the status button to yellow,
then just sits there. No activity, no nothing. Can't hear the modem
dialing. I *may* have a bum length of phone cord, but I seriously doubt
it. (Aside: Does usernet pop any sort of error messages if, say, it
initializes the modem and fails to get a dial-tone? Or is this
error-message-less function simply an indication that it can't find the
modem?)
Now, I just got done reading the FAQ and the Modem HOWTO, and it would
seem that I may be in a spot of trouble. Linux does (may?) not support
PnP and Winmodems and whatnot. Linux does (may?) not support any sort of
PCI modem. Now, as of yet I haven't been back home to pop the cover and
check whether or not I've got PCI or ISA, but when I popped in that PCI
ethernet card, I coulda *swore* it was PCI. Is this my problem? Or is
the HOWTO just out of date? I'm using Redhat 5.2 (kernel 2.0.36 I
*think*), and I also coulda *swore* that the appendix didn't say anything
about 56k Compaq modems being incompatible. But I could be wrong? Any
help? Any advice? Comments to buzz off and figure it out for myself?

AIUI any terms added to the contract after the contract has been made
(when the computer was purchased in this case) are null and void (either
unfair contract terms acts or sale of goods legislation IIRC). This
applies to both warranties and license agreements. I'm sure the vendors
wouldn't like it if you phoned them up the day after you bought the
thing from them and told them a list of demands that they either accept
or give you your money back. Most likely it would be thrown out of court
if you tried to sue them for this.

Dear Linux gurus....
I get the error message "Data type 9 not supported" when I try to use
RPM to install packages from either an FTP site or a CD of RedHat5.2
which I burned myself. I have been unable to find what this wonderfully
helpful little error message means so I still have no idea what the
problem is. I am currently running RedHat4.0. is there some sort of
incompatibility issue here when I try to deal with later RPM's? Perhaps
I need to update libraries first? No idea really so I'd appreciate any

Jeff,
Boot the system with a standard MS-DOS 5- or 6.x Setup floppy. Hit F5 to
bypass the startup files and then enter "fdisk /mbr" (w/o quotes). That
will remove whatever you've presently got in the mbr. Reboot the system
and NT Workstation's Boot Loader should then properly boot NT (this presumes,
of course, that your initial installation was done correctly).
As far as booting Linux goes, I'm not sure where you've been looking for
information. Generally, you use LILO to boot NT and not the other way around.
In this case, I'd recommend installing NT first. Then, after you've verified
it's running properly, proceed with Linux installation. When you configure
LILO, it'll recognize NT as a "DOS". Depending on your needs and preferences
you can have LILO default to booting either Linux or NT (the first OS you Add
during LILO's configuration will become the default OS).
Good luck,
David

Are you doing this with X running? If so, try killing either X or gpm

1) They are all free, download them and try them, see for yourself.
2) You can use RedHat's AnotherLevel. However I find that it limits
the functionality too much of the native packages.
3) GNOME sits on top of the WM. It's a very good "go-between" between
between the user, applications, and WM. It integrates these.
4) I use AfterStep. But your tastes may vary. As far as resources go,
if your system runs it at reasonable speed doing what you want to
do, do you care?
5) Shop at the "screen shot" web pages.
Any window manager is better than console IMHO. You can get many large

If yours is doing this more than once a month, with no power hiccups

You pay extra for an external modem but then you can just turn it off

RedHat seperates the runtime from the development environment.
Every runtime has an equivalent development environent. So:
$ rpm -qa | egrep glibc
glibc-2.0.7-29
glibc-devel-2.0.7-29
and thus:
$ rpm -qa | egrep XFree86
<snip>
XFree86-3.3.3.1-1
XFree86-devel-3.3.3.1-1
etc....
