You are out of room on that partition. The error means what it says.
>The file is created, with a zero length. If I su to root, this command works
>and writes the file, so there IS room on the disk.
The file system reserves a little bit of extra space for root, so that
if the file system fills up, root can still rescue things. However if
you also fill up the root reserve, than you could well find yourself in
a place where even root cannot do anything-- ie reinstall time.
Do,
df
to see which file system is full. Then erase stuff (or move stuff) so it
is no longer full (< 100% used)

Hi
You should use Samba (ie program smbclient, which is similiar to ftp-program) to
get files from MS servers.
- Lassi
PS. There is a "new" book from SSC:Samba:Integrating Unix and Windows (ISBN
1-57831-006-7) which covers quite well all aspects of networks with mixed
Linux/M$ machines

I have a program which runs on SCO Xenix. I want to port it to
Linux. I have the original installation diskettes for the software.
I'd like to try installing in Linux. Any suggestions?

Hm, looking at the innards of your computer or into the innards of
your video card manual would be your best bet.

A .tar file (a "tarball") is an archive.
A .tar.gz file (a compressed tarball) is a compressed archive.

Most likely, they will contain source code, configuration scripts and
Makefiles. You should be able to build and install them with a couple
of commands.

All the popular file managers, such as the (Gnome) Midnight Commander,
kfm or FileRunner, will allow you to look "inside" a tarball. And BTW,
someone had the idea for the same pun before - I think there exists a
Linzip, but don't smack me if it's only alpha or not there at all. I
just remember the word.

I don't know about Star Office, but Applix reads MS Office 95 and 97 sort
of OK (fast-saved documents are definitely a show-stopper, but you'd have
to be stoopid to save important work like that anyway - IMHO).
I believe however, that Applix can only export to MS Office 9x via
RTF-format, which might limit things a tad.

You will need at least a window manager. Of course, a desktop like KDE

NEVER log in as root. Use su, but only if you need to.
I can't even start to tell what the problems are if you run all-root!
Don't, don't, don't!!! (And I mean it.) For mounting your drives,
putting the "user" keyword into the appropriate line of /etc/fstab
gives ordinary users the right to mount or umount these.

Use xwd, and then use ImageMagick or netpbm to convert the screendump

I used to have Redhat 4.1 with NT, on a FAT disc. LILO was on the
FAT disc MBR, and it dual booted OK. This was a 1.6G disk.
After changing to Redhat 5.1, the same installation worked.
Then I changed to a 4 G disk, with a 2G FAT partition. Linux booted
OK, Win95 booted OK, Win NT booted - through the C drive - but then
said it could not use the C drive as the file system was unrecognised.
(Partitions on C were 2G DOS, 1G Linux and a swap partition).
Can anyone tell me why NT stopped seeing the C drive?
I agree with Eric about all NTFS being dangerous. Recovery is
much more complicated.

You do it indirectly, by indicating which interrupts are unavailable
in /etc/pcmcia/config.opts.
(you don't really need to tell the card to use a specific irq for it
to work: what's important is to tell it which irq's NOT to use)

I thought I posted this reply before but it seems to have got lost in
the ether...
Redhat 5.2 installs a default XClient that passes the value of your
wm_style to another script called RunWM. This script then attempts to
launch your choice of window manager, but if it fails it defaults
first to fvwm95, and then if that fails it tries fvwm.
For some reason, RunWM looks for wmaker (the WindowMaker executable)
in /usr/X11R6/bin. If you install the binary RPM the file will be in
/usr/bin, and if you compile your own version of WindowMaker then the
file will be in /usr/local/bin.
The solution is to create a symbolic link in /usr/X11R6/bin to the
executable (wherever it may be!)
I recommend compilation of WindowMaker, as I ran into a problem when I
tried the RPM version with the setstyle and getstyle executables (they
were linked against the wrong libraries or with the wrong compiler in
Redhat). I downloaded the source distribution, followed the
instructions in the README and it compiled first time and worked.
(There are other hints in the README about including /usr/local/bin in
your path and such like).
Regards,
Stephen.

Yes, I have done it, quite successfully.
First, make sure mgetty works without pppd in the picture.
Then, make sure pppd works without mgetty in the picture.
To make them work together, you'll need to use the lock option for
pppd. Make sure they are both using ttyS<whatever> or cua<whatever>;
otherwise, they won't be able to coordinate on the lock file. Actually,
I use ttyS<whatever>, so you might want to stick with that to be safe.
Make sure you're getting good logs to help you debug. There are options
of mgetty and pppd for this.
What you should be seeing mgetty do is test out the line every hour. If
the line tests out, it tries to create and instantly release the lock
(/var/lock/ttyS<whatever>, IIRC). Any time you dial in, mgetty will
create the lock file and hold onto it until you disconnect.
pppd will also test for the lock and won't go any further if the lock
file is there. If it's not there, it should create it and hold onto it
until you disconnect from that side. The big question with your problem
is: Is mgetty keeping the lock around when it shouldn't (shouldn't be
there when it's just listening to the line), or do you have some other
problem with pppd?
If you get through all the stages I outlined and still have trouble,
don't hesitate to ask again.
Hope that helps!
