Thank you very much. Just before I got your message I finally found it

]First, make sure mgetty works without pppd in the picture.
]Then, make sure pppd works without mgetty in the picture.
These were fine. I have set up a system as an ISP with mgetty (and also
as a CallerID recorder) and have certainly set up pppd without problem.
The problem was getting them to dance together. And "lock" was the key
word!
]To make them work together, you'll need to use the lock option for
]pppd. Make sure they are both using ttyS<whatever> or cua<whatever>;
]otherwise, they won't be able to coordinate on the lock file. Actually,
]I use ttyS<whatever>, so you might want to stick with that to be safe.
]Make sure you're getting good logs to help you debug. There are options
]of mgetty and pppd for this.
]What you should be seeing mgetty do is test out the line every hour. If
]the line tests out, it tries to create and instantly release the lock
](/var/lock/ttyS<whatever>, IIRC). Any time you dial in, mgetty will
]create the lock file and hold onto it until you disconnect.
]pppd will also test for the lock and won't go any further if the lock
]file is there. If it's not there, it should create it and hold onto it
]until you disconnect from that side. The big question with your problem
]is: Is mgetty keeping the lock around when it shouldn't (shouldn't be
]there when it's just listening to the line), or do you have some other
]problem with pppd?
The problem is tht without the lock option to pppd, when pppd starts to
try to use the ttyS1, mgetty thinks there is a phone call coming in and
grabs everything coming from the serial port, freezing out pppd and
chat. However as the info files ( are these really supposed to be an
improvement over the man pages? They sure do not seem to be so for me,
not least because of info's use of the emacs command abomination.)
state, with the lock option, mgetty checks when it hears something come
from the modem as to whether there is a lock file. If there is, it
assumes that something else is using the modem, and gets out of the way.
Anyway, thanks again, and sorry to bother the list.

I don't know much about programming..but did you try looking at the
source for Lynx, or any other gnu-licensed browser? Also, I think you
can get at least that part of the source for Netscape from the Mozilla
project..

I did that a couple of years back. Here's some of the things I'd
recommend:
1. Make a disk with your current kernel on it, or make sure you can use
loadlin to boot your current linux.
2. Test it.
3. Remove LILO if you are using it. Otherwise you will forget later and
screw things up.
4. Put the new hard drive in the system on a different connector
5. Do all the formatting, creating of partitions etc. DONT do what I did
at the time: start the partition on the first cylinder i.e. *inside* the
MBR :-(
6. Use the cpio program to copy the filesystem. Check the manpage for
options you might want to use (I think I used -apm).
7. Now you should be able to take out the old drive and move the new one
to the IDE connector you want and boot up with the boot disk/loadlin
8. Install LILO again, if you use it
That should more or less do the job.

Yes, at least according to their web page, the ZPX (internal) line has
both ISA and PCI internal controller based, operating system independent
modems.
Mind you the multitech web site has to be one of the very worst web
sites to try to find information from. The intial pages make it as hard
as possivleto try to figure out what to choose for what you want.
(eg instead of calling them Modems, they are called Client Access. And
then they have a buggy list which simply displays their brand names with
no explanation for you to choose from. If you dig in far enough there is
actually a lot of useful information there, but it sure seems that they
have no desire for anyone to actually see that information.

along the lines of the dialer in OS Warp that has a Hangup after x

gdm is the Gnome Display Manager (similar to xdm or gdm). It runs with
its own user and group because it hasn't been audited to run as root.

Which C compiler do you use, which library? More details, please.
If your compiler is gcc, you must say "g++ hello.C".
If your compiler is egcs, you must say "gcc hello.C -lstdc++"

Watch out: "passive/manual" switches are no good if you use higher
resolutions (eg. 1024*768, 1200*1024, etc.). You'll get a ghosting
effect, where all windows will be doubled. Casper at work.
Also, there's the problem of turning connections on and off through
the switch: Remember to switch to the right PC when booting it,
otherwise it will complain it can't find a keyboard, and the OS won't
load the mouse driver.
Finally, although NT allows your "unplugging" mouse/keyboard during a
session (ie. switching to another PC), 9x will disable the mouse if
you do this -> you'll have to reboot or switch to DOS to have the
driver reloaded. Uncool.
"Active" switches cost a lot more (eg. 8-port OmniView costs over
$500), but they don't suffer from the problems above.
