Hi,
Running Mandrake 7.1 and linuxconf will not start with its X GUI. In
this case I have telnetted to this system and set the DISPLAY variable
to my local system.
Other X applications work fine this way.
Any ideas on what to check?
Thanks,

In fact, I just noticed that in the latest release, 4.0, they have
removed support for the 5597/98 SiS chipset!

Thansk! I tried this, and results in a major improvement - I can now
use the mouse, and the text is displayed correctly, and though I still
have problems with screen size/placement (xvidtune helped a bit), the
system is now usable, so I can keep Linux on my PC for occasional use...
I got the 3.3.3.1 release off the ftp.xfree86.org site.

the tar method I know about:
tar -t /dev/sc0
for testing (listing)
tar -x /dev/sc0
to unpack in current dir
You might want to try a -z or a -Z with that if compression was used
tar -xz /dev/sc0
or is bzip2 compression has been used the format should be
tar -x /dev/sc0 --use=bzip2
Hope that helps!

I don't know of any modern text editors that don't offer word wrapping.
Emacs and vi certainly do.

However, a text editor plus a markup language interpreter is a word

All the editors I've seen in the past several years (emacs,
jed, vim, ...) do word-wrapping. Many have outline modes,
folding, spell checking, etc.
>I really just wanted something to write with. I haven't
>understood whether LaTeX is an editor capable of word wrapping.
LaTeX is a typesetting system based on a mark-up language. It's
like [gnt]roff -- or perhaps more like HTML. You edit a text
file with the editor of preference, then run the file through
LaTeX to produce a device independant file, which you run
trough another program to print/display on the device of your
choice.
[One of the more recent "devices" that has been supported is
PDF. You can generate PDF files with hyperlinks, tables of
content, indexes, etc.]
LaTeX (which is actually a set of macros for TeX) is a
professional quality typesetting system which is often used to
typeset books and technical journals. It is particularly good
at typesetting equations. It is the definitive method for
preparing technical documents in mathematics (include computer
science), and the physical sciences.
It has sophisticated line/word wrapping algorithms and a
hyphenation system that's the best on the planet. It supports
a slew of languages and character sets, and does all of the
things required to produce acceptible output: kerning,
ligatures, etc.
LaTeX does tables of conent, indexes, list of figures, list of
tables, footnotes, endnotes, marginnotes, automatic
cross-references, and tons of other things that MS Word doesn't
do (or doesn't do right).
Compared to something produced with TeX/LaTeX, the output of
programs like MS Word is completely unacceptible garbage.
LaTeX is not well suited for things like newspaper or magazine
layout where you want to plop a whole slew of different objects
around the pages in varying ways. It is suited for letters,
reports, and technical papers (especially things with
equations).

On a RedHat 6.1 with the supplied XFree86 3.3.5 it ignores
XUSERFILESEARCHPATH.
On a RedHat 6.2 system, where I have installed XFree86 4.0, it works.
So it's probably something wrong with XFree86 which has been fixed in
the
latest release.

I am trying to "make" squid on Linux RedHat 6.0.
There was no "make" on the machine so I used RPM to put it there.
Then I have to do a "./configure" from the directory containing the squid
release.
When I dot the "./configure" I get error messages as follows:
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the c compiler (gcc -g) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: c compiler cannot
create executables
What else do I need to install or configure to make this work?

Whenever I want to read the RedHat linux CD I can't. I do a "cd /mnt/cdrom"

It is defined as ISO something or other (ISO9066??) in the fstab.
So to read it I do a "mount /mnt/cdrom" and get in fine. I can then do "ls".
How come? What file system does the CD use?

In all fairness, this particular bit of brain-damaged architecture should
be blamed on Intel and IBM. In the IBM-compatible PC world we're still
suffering from all the bad decisions made 20 years ago. Too bad DEC
management didn't allow their engineers to develop microcomputers in
the early 1970s as they wanted to, we might have gotten a different
standard. (DEC management's long-standing disdain for micros ultimately
cost the company its existence.) Then again, PDP-8 architecture is no great
shakes in a lot of ways either, and that's what a 1970s DEC PC would

Windows is a mistake on top of a mistake on top of a mistake on top of a

I did this instead in kernel/timer.c:
=====
...
#include <asm/uaccess.h>
/* 7-10-00 missing define? (from 2.2 linux/sched.h)*/
#define DEF_PRIORITY (20*HZ/100) /* 210 ms time slices */
...
/* 7-10-00 error in source code?
if (p->priority < DEF_PRIORITY) */
if (p->rt_priority < DEF_PRIORITY)
...
=====
I also had to do this in drivers/mtd/vmax301.c
=====
#include <linux/module.h>
#include <linux/malloc.h>
#include <linux/ioport.h>
#include <linux/init.h>
/* 7-10-00 because spinlock stuff defined in
linux/spinlock.h, called by linux/module.h */
#if 0
#include <asm/spinlock.h>
#endif
#include <asm/io.h>
...
=====
It also works for me so far. :)

The CD_Rom is a device which has to be mounted (module loaded) first

I'd love to capture them, but they fly by so quickly I have no hope in hell
of even reading them.
The behaviour of note is that right after asking me if I've untarred the
files I downloaded, it starts as if it's going to work, and then when the
"Progress Indicator" should/would appear, the error messages start. At
this point, I start to get directory structures appearing in the root of
my filesystem (wpbin, wplib, wphelp, etc..).

MS-DOS was pretty much a clone of CP/M. CP/M contains a lot
of DECisms (Kildall worked for DEC at one time, didn't he?).
There's no way two independent efforts could both com up with
PIP and damn-near identical FCBs.
I used DEC PCs when they finally came out. They were
horrendous. You had to buy pre-formatted floppies from DEC.
You couldn't run standard CP/M or MS-DOS OSes or applications
-- you had to buy official DEC software. The dual floppy drive
had only a single positioner: using both floppies at the same
time was horribly slow. The keyboards, monitors, and mechanical
designs were otherwise very nice.
They were such a spectacular failure that DEC gave them away by
the truckload to VAX customers for use as VT200 terminals.

Subject: How can a script tell if X is running?

What's the kosher way to say, in a shell script, "Is X running right
now?" Also nice would be a way to tell if either root or some other
administrative type is logged on to the X session on display :0.0 (or
any display, for that matter).

Subject: xdm and chooser question
Date: 12 Jul 2000 08:48:17 -0700
[ Originally posted on comp.os.linux.x ]
I'm toying with the following idea, but not sure if it's doable or how
(the xdm man page is not helpful):
Instead of getting the usual xdm login window when my machine boots
up, I would be presented with a chooser containing two options.
The first option would be to start an X session on this machine, as
before. The second option would be to start an X session on one of the
computers at school. That is, the second option would make my computer
behave like an X terminal, with all the X clients running on the
remote machine I use at school, and the X server running, of course,
on my machine at home.
Any suggestions appreciated.

"mt datcompression" works on my Caldera 2.3 box with an HP DAT tape.

Maybe get a newer one? I imagine you can find it via
