Why aren't these regular links? It is not like they are links to other

I am getting a new 13Gb hard drive and am going to use it strictly for
installing a linux server. I realize 13 G is a lot for 1 linux install but I
am sure I can find a use for that much space. Also locally we have 3 available
distributions of linux. Redahat 6.0, Mandrake 6.0, and Suse 6.1.
I have used redhat (both 5.2 and 6.0). Is there a major difference between
these 3 distributions? And if so would it be worth my time to install all 3?
If there is major points for each I don't mind spending the money to get them
all but I prefer not too have to try to download all 3 just to compare them and
find out they are all the same.

Any help here would be appreciated.

You could create a /spool directory in the root filesystem (I'm guessing that
you over compensated for space somewhere and it might be in root.)
Then, use pax to transfer all the data from /var/spool to /spool
Something like:
pax -rw /var/spool /spool
Next - blow away everything under /var/spool since it is in spool
Create a symbolic link - double check this:
ln -s /var/spool /spool
and this might hold you for a while.

Others have suggested Star Office and Word Perfect. You
might also consider Applixware. It is not free, but it
doesn't cost too much and I have found it useful. It is
not quite consistent with MS Office because Word by default
writes files out in a special format which is not readable
by anything including earlier forms of Word. But if you
make sure the Word document is saved in a reasonable format,
it can be read by Applix. There is a demo version of Applix
which comes with the most recent official RedHat 6.0
distribution. I find the spreadsheet easier to use in
many ways than the latest version of Excel, which is too
gimicky for my taste.

The problem you have with Real Player is well known, and
will be fixed by Real Audio sooner or later. Let's hope it
is sooner. Meanwhile, there is a apparently a version of
the G2 Realplayer on Read Audio's web site in an obscure
location which does work, possibly with some glitches.
This has been thoroughly discussed in this newsgroup,
so you can probably find it by using dejanews.

Hi. This is a common problem. When I first reported it, I was
accused of trolling. It does happen to some installations, but it
is unclear what is wrong. It seems that the libraries that it requires
overwrite system libraries that are required by init or some boot
related program. Actually, reinstall is not necessary, just rebuild
libraries from a rescue floppy. As for making it work, do not force
the installation of the libraries. Install them in some other directory,
and reset the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to them in a wrapper shell
script. Another way to solve the problem is to buy another machine,
and install one of those distributions on it that includes Star Office.

This is really a silly wasteful problem, and it seems to plague
newbies primarily.

I see that others have mentioned the slocate cron job and how to keep it
from indexing your FAT partition. I just want to add that I run RH 6.0
with a constantly mounted vfat partition. Until I got annoyed by the
uninteresting DOS files locate returned, I was letting the cron job
index that partition and never had a problem. So it seems likely that
your vfat partition is corrupt. If I were you, I'd boot into Windows and
run Scandisk on that drive pronto.

I don't know if you can buy an ORIGINAL version this way, but as of a few
months ago, you could get an UPGRADE as a download. It was one of these
secure order form things that links straight into a secure download site.
It worked pretty well for me (at the time, I had fast net access at work,

One possibility is that the computer shut down because the
power supply was overheating. I would expect there to be
some information in the UPS logs---assuming you have software
to monitor the UPS on the computer. But it is at least
worth considering. See if the fan moves freely. When the
fan binds, the power supply overheats and shuts itself off.

Subject: Give back on ppp connect/Netscape problem
Date: Thu, 22 Jul 1999 00:57:05 GMT

I have fought this problem for a couple of days now. It was
exascerbated by the fact I had also changed ISP's, but this turned out
to be the clue I was looking for. What leads one astray is that the
modem can connect, but you still may not be logged into you ISP and
ppp initiated. My other clue was my /var/ppp/messages stated that my
"login script failed". What I did then was start a minicom session and
watch what my ISP was asking for during the login process, and then
used this information to properly change my login script. What had me
fouled up was that my previous ISP used "login:" to ask for the
username, while my new one used "username:". The default "expect"
for Gnome network configuration is "ogin:", a substring for "login:"
My new ISP, as stated used "username:", so the correct
substring for the "expect" entry would be "sername:" or something
shorter. Just "ame:" would work. Don't forget the colon and quotes are
not necessary. Once this was changed, the modem connected, the login
took place, and ppp was started by the ISP. Netscape came up and
connected to it's home page. To change this you must edit the ppp0
interface. Edit the first "expect" entry ( under the communication tab
for Gnome network configurator) and change the substring to match what
your ISP asks for. With Kppd, the is a separate login script tab when
you go into setup/account setup/edit. This worked for me and I hope
some others.
Isn't this fun!

on a related note, I noticed a similar thing. If you go to your
/windows/Tremporary Internt Files/ directory , there are files and
directories there that you cannot see in windows. I've never had any
problems deleting any thing in a vfat partition though. I use "rm -f -r
/(directory)" and that has never given me any problems.

Have to agree with that, MS-CHAP is used primarily between Windows clients and NT RAS.
PAP is everywhere else, even my NT box at home.

What is the mail server supposed to do with the Excel docs? Any mail
server should pass them through quite happily, but I suspect that's
not what's being asked for.

If you mean mail client, I'd suggest trying StarOffice or ApplixWare
although I don't know if either actually do this.
