I've been having a weird problem with my linux machine lately. After
it has been up for a while, it will not allow any logins. I usually
leave it sitting on the floor, without a monitor, and telnet into it
from other machines. When I try to telnet in, I don't get a login
prompt of any kind.
I plugged in a monitor, and from the console, I get the login prompt.
After I put in my username and password, the screen refreshes and
gives me another login prompt. This happens no matter what
username/password combo I try to use.
I can reboot the computer with Ctrl-Alt-Delete, which sends a shutdown
-r now message. After rebooting, I can log in as normal.
This happened twice over the weekend. Both times the computer worked
fine for several hours, but after 12+ hours it would not allow me to
login.
Has anyone seen this problem before?
I am running RedHat 5.2 with the kernel that came with it(2.0.36, I
think).
The machine still seems to be working: Apache is running fine, and it
is still IP Masqing for my Lan. ftp doesn't work, it won't let me log
on.

In my last kernel compilation, I opted for the SoftOSS midi feature. A
nice module was created, but I have not found any instruction anywhere
as to how to activate it or integrate with my existing audio. I have
been using OPL3 for midi, and it's been working OK, but I wanted to try
for some better quality sound. Does anyone know how to set this up?
Kernel 2.2.1, opl3sa2/opl3 sound. I have the instrument patch files in
/dos/ultrasnd/midi, as it says in the kernel sound docs. Alas, that's
all they tell you!
Thanks in advance for any tips,
-Steve

Yes it can be done. The latest issue of the Linux Journal, a magazine see
"http://www.ssc.com" , has an excellent article on the Linux Router Project
that you'll find interesting.
Here is their URL:

Not really, so far none of the one that I found on the web work correctly. I did
manage to compile krecord once I upgraded to the newer kde. I also had to change
the makefile since it wanted a couple environment variable that if I set the way
it wants crash kde on start up. Putting the actual paths in the makefile allows
it to compile. But then when I run it and tell it to use 44100hz it changes it
to 44188hz which makes it incompatible with the wav to mp3 program which will not
accept this odd ball rate. That's not all, once in a while it records silence but
when it does record the sound is distorted. It doesn't really matter whether I
put the input level very low or very high.
I found another program that seems nice but only support one sound card, turns
out not to be mine. There is one other programs that seems nice and works on the
console. When I switch it to 1027x768 resolution it disables the display and I
have log in another session to kill it. As for recording, when it doesn't crash,
it records silence. As if it can't find the sound card.
Snd is the only one that records something I can play back except that it insist
on only recording at 8035hz (??&*???%$?).
After several weeks of research I have to conclude that I can only record music
from the Line Input either under Winblows or OS/2. With Linux it only works on
a few sound cards, and mine, even though it works very well under OS/2 is not
recognized correctly by recording programs. They sort of recognize it partly under
an old Linux kernel but not under the new 2.2.2 kernel. As for playback I have no
problem, all the programs I've tried work well, except UMP which works like shit,
it plays midi too fast. Kmidi works well except for the core dump when you try to
play more than one song. Kmidi didn't do that with the other kde version. It looks
like something is broken in kde beside the console window which does weird things,
for instance if you run joe and the file is too small, you can't edit anything.
You can exit the file allright. It may play this silly trick with some other apps,
I wouldn't know since I didn't try. It seems to not send the right position information
to the console program. My X is set for 1024x768.

hi all,
Has anyone had any joy mounting UFS filesystems read/write under the
2.2.1 kernel? I've built all the necessary into said kernel, and when I
mount my Solaris x86 partitions with o=rw or -w, mount reports that they
are mounted read/write, but any attempt to modify them results in a
"read-only filesystem" error.
Any ideas?

So, now MS has 250 million users!? Just a month ago it was about 90
million--I guess that I should have bought stock in MS :) Of course,
the user base for Linux is much smaller; however, it is steadily growing
and by the end of this year could easily be between 12 and 15 million
users. I think that from a business standpoint, though, 7 million is
hard to overlook. It is time for the commercial developers to start
porting their stuff--read this as games, since plenty of software exists
for other aspects of the commercial market.
The only thing really holding Linux back is acceptance by the end-user
that wants to play games, as well as surf the web and send some email.
Contrary to other posts in this newsgroup and COLA, Linux set up is not
really difficult. If a killer game was to appear on the market that was
for Linux only, I think that we would see the number of users go up
drastically.
Bill Gates steals software everyday and has done so for decades now,
by the way. W2K is going to flop and MS will be forced to shift their
business tactics. Linux is lining up as a very good alternative to MS
Win(anything) and by this time next year, Linux will become a major
player.

You'll need to install the JDK (Java Development Kit) in order to run java

I didn't mention John simply because (no disrespect intended,
John) I don't know him from anyone else on the street. However,
the name Linus Torvalds is immediately recognizable to many for
the bearer's celebrated contributions to others. Such celebrity
status, however, carries certain expectations. Unwillingness to
recognize it as a simple fact of life is a sign of immaturity.

2.0.9?? Um, upgrade. There are serious nasty bugs in that kernel.
(And no, you don't have to move to glibc2, just get up to 2.0.34 or

Never heard of that one, but I have a plain old 2940UW on one of my home
systems that's worked great for a couple years.

Adaptec cards are pretty generic, as in common. They're fine cards,
though, and Adaptec has been good to the kernel developers.

I wouldn't trust it. 2.0.9 had lots and lots of SCSI problems. I think
it was 2.0.28 or so that I actually trusted it enough to switch from
1.2.13.
You should upgrade to a recent kernel anyway, though. There are some
serious denial of service attacks against that kernel (from "f00f" on
Pentiums to nestea......).

That is different. I am not trying to target the programmers who are
writing operating systems, per se.
However, I should point out that the funny thing is that most of those
systems have the same bugs because they were based on free BSD code.
Noone cared about security back then. Noone cared about careful code
back then. Noone cared about licences back then. They just cared
about using what they were able to use.
Well, what am I talking about.... not a lot has changed...
