On my syslog (version 1.3.0 -- yep, old) the MARK is written to the log
with a facility of 'mark'. I doubt this has changed, so you could
potentially stop the logging by adding '!mark.debug' to one of the syslog.conf
lines...for example:
*.debug;!mark.debug /var/adm/messages
Then sending syslog a HUP.

I'm looking to build a new machine over the next month or so. I've got a
440bx mb, with onboard SCSI and now I'm looking for the biggest
bottleneck-killer: the video card. I really like the diamond viper 5500.
How well does this perform under linux?? any alternatives? Also, I'd like
a really kick ass sound card. I know that open sound does not support the
diamond chips--how about the soundblasters?? the new sb live?? I'm not
quite convinced that 3d audio is ready to go, but i do know that creative
has hired engineers to write drivers FOR linux. any recommendations for a
sound card?? I'll probably be dual booting into NT, at least for a while. .

man su
su username <-- become the 'username' user using the current environment
su - username <-- become the 'username' user using their environment
When you invoke su without a username it assumes that you want to become
root.

Subject: Ghostscript - Do I need it if RH5.2 already prints
Date: 9 Apr 1999 18:32:08 GMT
I just installed RH5.2 and was having problems setting up my Okidata 6e.
I finally figured out that I needed to configure it for a HPLaserJet 4.
While searching for answers, I came upon Ghostscript.
My question is:
Since RH 5.2 is currently able to print (did a postscript test), will
adding Ghostscript help at all or improve the printing capability?
Thanks

Did you try makeing the device like this:
./MAKEDEV pg0
I am just assuming that it is already in the script and perhaps you set up
pg0 incorrectly. The scripts sometimes set up appropriate links. Also, I
use SCSI emulation on my 7200i, but you probably don't have that option on
the external.

You are a good candidate for Debian (http://www.debian.org/).
Packages are coordinated (modulo bugs); source code is available
alongside binaries. (Rumor had it that for a brief time some
FreeBSDers even considered adopting some version of the Debian
packaging system.)

Hi,
I've got an AMD k6-2 300, and was wondering what type of compilied kernel I
could run....
I'm currently running a 2.2.5-2.i586 kernel, and I'm wondering if I should be
able to run an i686 compiled kernel?
I tried installing the 2.2.5-2.i686 kernel via rpm, but it complained that
"wrong platform" or something.
Why's it say that? I upgraded from an i386 to the 2.2.5-2.i586 ok... what's it
take to run the i686 compilied kernels?
Thanks for the info....

Subject: Database question(s)
Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 13:31:56 -0700
What is needed to actually start or create a database in RedHat 5.2 using
PostgreSql?
I've issued this command:
# initdb --pgdata=/home/blake/pgsql --pglib=/usr/lib/pgsql
and all the files and directories were placed, now I'm lost! I then issued
the command
# createdb testdatabase
and the error message i always recieve is:
Connection to database 'template1' failed.
connectDB() failed: Is the postmaster running and accepting connections at
'UNIX SOCKET' on port '5432'?
createdb: database creation failed on testdatabase
It happens on any command I issue relating to the Database
So I start the postmaster by issuing this command
# nohup postmaster >logfile 2>&1 &
I recieve this in response
[1] 1100
But still get the error messages above?? any help is greatly appreciated!
I am down to my last 2 hairs!

How to use nested ` operator.
For example,
basename pwd
outputs "pwd".
But
basename `pwd`
is the same as "basename /home/sbnaran/folder" (or something like this),
and the output is "folder".
Now in my Makefile I want to assign the result of `basename `pwd`` to
a variable. The following, which is close to what I want, works:
PWD=`pwd`
But this does not work
PWD=`basename `pwd``
Thank you.

The short answer is probably no. Databases are mighty difficult to backup.
Unless you have a disk mirror system which you can break to obtain a 'clean'
disk image to back-up, you are only likely to be able to make a back-up
(that can be restored) if your database software has a 'create back-up
command, option or operation'. Check with you database vendor, and then
check that your back-ups do restore a working and valid system.
This is nothing to do with samba. These operations should be completely
transparent to samba.
