You know, as I have been reading your various posts, I am taken aback by
the sheer arrogance and rudeness displayed. Why would an issue like this
make you so angry? Sadly, I have noted many others who share your elitist
attitude that only computer "experts" like yourself should be able to
own/operate one. Anyone who does not meet your criteria for being
considered a competent user is immediately classified a "bozo". What an
arrogant, ignorant statement. While I am good with computers, I know
virtually nothing about car repair. Yet, I am able to drive a car. If
something goes wrong, I take it to the shop. I wonder if the repair guys
consider me to be a bozo because I do not know how to make simple repairs?
On the contrary, I'm sure they appreciate the revenue I bring them. In the
same vein, we as computer "experts" can capitalize on our knowledge, and
use it to help out people who are unskilled. Ever hear of "Technical
Support?" They exist to help out end users. There is also a big demand
for programmers who can use their skills to make computers accessible to
"the masses".
Computers are very powerful tools for learning. I believe that everyone
should be able to experience and utilize this power for their own
betterment. Elitists like you want to keep "the common folk" in the dark
ages because they are not willing to study the intricacies of computer
systems. Grow up and drop the attitude. Luckily you are skilled with
computers and can surround yourself with them, for I can't imagine that any
human would want to be around you and your arrogance.
To save bandwidth, I will simulate your probable response to my post. Here
goes: "F**K YOU YOU JERK, YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING YOU BOZO."
Was that pretty close?

I think Metrolink Complete is the way to go. Metrolink Complete offers
you the possibility of three different installations (1.2, 2.0 or 2.1)
you can choose the one that fits best for your job. I am using Red Hat
Motif at the moment but i want to to switch to Metrolink.

Damn straight! I don't know how many web pages I've seen that
are all gloss and no content -- nothing but annoying javascript
and animated gifs; imagemaps that don't go anywhere useful;
hard-coded fonts and sizes (thanks Microsoft) that are only
legible on the author's machine; tables and frames that are
chopped off, overlap, or just plain don't render (though
presumably looked nice on some browser at some resolution and
screensize).
If your web site isn't worth looking at with lynx, then it
isn't worth looking at. Period.

What I don't understand is why, even if something had to get swapped to
make room for the bloatware we know as SO, is the hard drive burping
every 10 seconds even when I do nothing at all. Just sitting there, the
drive will burp every 10 seconds into eternity (as far as I can tell).
Shouldn't it do what it has to do and be done with it for the time
being?

We are trying to port some applications from Solaris to Linux (RH6, XF86), and
the current lesstif is not up to the task. What are your opinions on other
Motif packages, e.g., Redhat Motif, Metrolink(?), etc.
I am more concerned with compatibility (we'd like same source to run on both
platforms, for instance) than anything else (I mean, we can spend a couple
hundred bucks for a suitable package). Links to info and or opinions would be
appreciated, esp. experience (good or bad) with portability. Would also like

The book I find that I reference the most is "Using Linux". The
Linux Documentation Project has several good manuals you can download,
as well as the updated HOW-TOs. But I would say there is no one
definitive best book on Linux. It's just too big of a subject to cover
all aspects of in a single book.

Amaya (www.w3.org) at least has the text mode preview. Although can't
you just preview things at different window sizes by resizing the
window? :)

Not quite. OK Beta was more expensive, but that wasn't what decided it for
the public. The video industry turned their back on Beta because Sony
charged too much for the tapes and refused to allow other manufacturers to
make them, or players... Beta vs VHS was basically the same Apple Mac vs IBM
PC war.
As all the films were coming out on VHS by the early eighties, the public
didn't have much choice, unless they only wanted the video for recording and
never bought or rented films....
Besides, there was a third format, that was also better than VHS,,,
Video 2000 had 6 hour tapes that were double sided.
(And the quality was better than VHS there as well)

Boot up into the rescue system on the CD.
Mount the filesystem that contains the /etc directory.
Edit /etc/passwd and put that a in bsh.
Save and reboot.
Everything should be fine.

Subject: Re: xterm broken?
Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 20:02:06 GMT
Hi everybody. First, thanks for all your help. Based on these
responses, I think I need to recompile the X libraries. (Before, I was
using the glibc version of the X libraries, but I think they were too
old and were compiled for glibc 2.0x). What tipped me off to this is
that the glibc version of Netscape didn't work, even though it was
glibc. Also, NOTHING linked to x libraries worked. (For example, TCL/Tk
wouldn't even work! I put my old libc X libraries in my ld.so.conf file
until I can recompile Tcl/Tk.) Also, I fixed the xterm problem by
turning off Unix 98 PTYs in the kernel config. If my computer works
after this, I'll be happy (but I'll never, ever, ever do it again... :)
Thanks,
Artit
P.S. Word of warning. You don't want to compile Mozilla. I did,
thinking it would work, but after 20 hours and about 700 megs of
generated files, it seg faults. (This is Milestone build 9, your
mileage may vary).
