I don't about Ultra DMA, but I do have a few suggestions:
1. Using m8 seems rather low. Use the -i flag to find the maximum setting
for this paramenter (look for MaxMultSect in the output).
2. It is unnecessary to write a script. Just add the command line to
rc.sysinit just before the part that starts up swapping. I have:
sbin/hdparm -d -c3 -m16 /dev/hda
I hope this helps.

Ofcourse not. You can also bypass security on NTFS when you mount it in Linux.
This is just part of the physical access security risk.

Subject: Mounting Problem using SMB
Date: Sat, 10 Apr 1999 16:26:11 GMT
Hello,
Has any ever succesfully mounted a file on an SMB mounted drive using the
loopback device???? I am trying to create a 16M file on an SMB share, format
it ext2 and then mount it using dev/loop0. However I keep getting errors
reporting that the file is not a valid ext2 partition.
Here is the sequence of events I perform. (/mnt/NT_SMB is the name of the
mounted smb drive that I mounted with smbmount.)
smbmount //NTSERVER/share /mntNT_SMB -n -I 172.16.3.1
insmod loop
dd if=/dev/zero of=/mnt/NT_SMB/linux_x2 bs=1k count=16k
losetup /dev/loop0 /mnt/NT_SMB/linux_x2
mke2fs linux_x2 -m 0
mount -t ext2 /dev/loop0 /mnt/NT_LEACH
Everything works here except the mount command. I can run e2fsk on the file
linux_x2 and it reports that everything is fine. Is this a bug with smbfs???
Or am I doing something wrong???

I can't fix lilo.
I have a Scsi disk and when I boot from the Rescue floppies, 0 SCSI devices
are detected. I can't use insmod because aic7xxx and insmod are not on the
rescue set. I can boot in expert mode (using the CDROM) and find aic7xxx and
insmod, but I can't copy them to a floppy because device /dev/fd0 does not
exist. When I try to run Lilo from expert mode, I get the error message:
Can't find file or directory /dev/sda.
Anyone have any suggestions?

I had that problem, but just moving the mouse cleared the hangup.
The problem disappeared after I installed the 'imwheel' package
(to support use of the roller wheel) with its patched version of gpm.

I've had trouble getting it to work as a module, but no trouble if
compiled into the kernel itself. At least, in the 2.0.x series of
kernels. At kernel 2.2.4, it seemed that compiling in ftape support
without zftape caused the kernel to be unable to see the tape drive.
When compiled with both ftape and zftape support, the QIC-80 seemed
to work fine.
YMMV.

Hi,
I would like to install RedHat on a CDless system over FTP from an NT
box.
But, I need to find a RockRidge driver so that I can get full file
name support from the ftp.
There has to be a RockRidge driver for NT somewhere, or some way to
mount this CD in NT where I will get full length file names.
Anyone know where I can get such a driver?
Thanks,

If all else fails, you could try to upgrade Gnome and all the related
packages or to recompile it.

I was attempting to compile some GNOME tarballs--emphasis on *attempt*, since
the attempted compilations of gnome-core and gnome-libs ended in segfault.
Meanwhile, I was passing the time by browsing using Netscape. Around this
time, Enlightenment, my window manager, reported a segfault, so I exited X
and went to edit my .Xclients file so I could use another window manager
which was presumably more friendly. Funny thing, the first time I invoked the
text editor, it segfaulted as well, but the second time I invovked it, it
seemed to work. i don't quite remember the ordering of events after that,
except that everything went haywire. Apps would inconsistently segfault;
'startx' took me to a 'login:' prompt; and I even got a report of a general
protection fault. I decided to shut down, so I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete, which
didn't do anything, and then I tried logging in as root. Instead of the
password prompt, I got this:

some maintainance. I logged in, tried to do fsck -RA, tried to shutdown,
which failed, and hard reset my computer again. This time my computer
rebooted with no problems, but random segfaults of apps were still a problem.
I rebooted again, reinstalled the rpms of my slightly older version of GNOME
(still a 1.0 version), and so far as yet, I've experienced no problems. I'm
even running Enlightenment right now.
Any ideas of what the problem might have been?

If it ain't broke don't fix it. By the sound of it, either your system
*already* has Ghostscript set up _or_ you have a postscript-capable printer.
Either way, leave well enough alone.
