It's very useful over a WAN. :-)
I would *certainly* remove it from any publicly accessable server.

Unless some other service requires it, yes.
Don't block the port though, that can cause delays in services that
check for it (like sendmail).

I'm a Debian developer, I've been using Linux since Slackware 2.3, I

Of course, the only person I ever talk to who knows what it is is my wife,

Subject: 2.4 kernel messages
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 19:30:11 -0600
Greetings,
I recently installed the 2.4 kernel on my Red Hat 6.2 machine. The
kernel seems to boot fine, but there are a few bugs I need to work out.
Here is a sampling of error messages greped from /var/log/messages that
occur during system boot up...these concern me.
The third line I find curious. It is as if a map to the modules isn't
loaded...
Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: Loaded 15012 symbols from
/boot/System.map-2.4.0.
Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.4.0.
Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: No module symbols loaded.
Obviously, the error lines are disturbing...
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: error: 'net.ipv4.ip_always_defrag' is an
unknown key
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: error: 'kernel.sysrq' is an unknown key
All of these lines concern me. What is nls and why is there no devpts?
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module devpts
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos mount: mount: fs type devpts not supported by
kernel
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
nls_iso8859-1
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
nls_iso8859-1
Hhhmmm...
Jan 13 18:49:45 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-14
I've recompiled the kernel, checking my configuration to see if there
are an crucial options I missed which may relate to any of these
errors. But my configuration seems decent...
I've also tried to figure out how devpts relates to the 2.4 kernel, but
I had trouble finding documentation related to this issue. What is
different in 2.4 with devpts? I had no problem with my previous
2.2.14-5.0 kernel...
For some reason, modprobe can't find necessary modules. Is this related
to the "No module symbols loaded." error in the first sample of
output? My modules make & install seemed to go fine during the kernel
build.
Any insight into these errors would be helpful. This is my first kernel
compilation, so please bear with me :)
Thanks in advance to all who reply.

I've tried that with the same results. Unfortunately this is a used
monitor so I don't know any of the scan rates. In windows I get that my
monitor supports the following:
1024x768 @ 85Hz
1280x1024 @ 85Hz
1600x1200 @ 60Hz
1800x1440 @ 60Hz
1920x1440 @ 60Hz
How can I use this info tp set up xf86config?

It froze because even ctrl-alr-del didn't make it reboot.

Tried it and nothing happens.

I agree, but then again my monitor is in the Xconfigurator's list! Does
this mena a bug in Xconfigurator?

Did you link /boot/System.map to the right file?
Did you try running depmod -a manually? Any errors?

That particular one is relatively slow. I was thinking in the 20+
MB/s range. You may still be getting performance loss. Only way to
tell is time a large backup figure out your average throughput. That
drive should get 1.5 to 3MB/s at full speed depending on the
compression rate.

Not quite what I meant. Say you have a jukebox with 50 tapes, do you
really want to have to remember which tape is in which slot? The
backup software uses bar code labels and electronic labels on the
media to track what's where and automatically build a new inventory
when you swap tapes out. You can't track tapes by what backup is on
them since they may contain many backups or none at all. You also
want to track things like number of mounts, so you can retire tapes as
they age.
>

I does get to be a real pain when you have a lot of systems. You
probably want to rotate full backups and incremental backups over your
systems, so they're not all dumping all their data on any one night
and clogging up the network. Then if one bombs out one night, you
have to do a one-off to get it back to date. A good system will let
you set the schedule and then never think about it again. There's
also the issue of what tapes need to be shipped offsite and when they
should be returned. Gets even worse when you have to work with
database down-time windows.

I did an extensive system with Netbackup. A few terabytes of data and
a 15,000 slot robot. Wasn't the easiest to get configured but hummed
right along with rarely a problem once it got going. I've used Legato
Networker on a number of smaller systems and it's a snap to get going.
It all cases, they were using secure networks, so the IP based
authentication was good enough. In a riskier environment, you'd have
to add key pair encryption.
Anyway, this is really comparing apples and oranges. Tar is an
archiving tool and not a backup system. Netbackup actually stores
it's files in tar format. If you want to use just tar, then you'll
need a human as the backup system.

Rename your folder
/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk
to /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk.OLD
then do your modules_install
It will create a new folder and install all modules associated with the new
kernel that you are booting.
You have a bunch of old modules in the folder that are no longer associated
with your kernel that you just made.

It must be a slakware thing. I've only got 7.1 to look at, and both
those commands along with 71 others are only in /bin and not /usr/bin.
I find it a bit silly to use the full paths in a script anyway. Just
set PATH and let the shell do the work. I don't remember the Unix 95
or 98 standards specifying the path for commands; only their options
and function. Don't have a copy of the POSIX specs to look at.

RedHat 7.0 use the kernel 2.2.16.
I try with the Mandrake 7.2 with use the kernel 2.2.17 : and no problem
anymore.
So I upgrade my RedHat machine with the 2.2.18 kernel and all my problems

hi
suddenly, some of my library permissions in /usr/lib (and perhaps some
others, i havent checked yet) have been changed from their original
perms (eg. -rwxr-xr-x) to this: "?---------". also, the number of links
to the file are reported as being 0!!!!!. typical entries look like
this:
?--------- 0 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 libncurses_p.a
?--------- 0 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 libncurses.a
?--------- 0 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 libncurses.so
?--------- 0 root root 0 Jan 1 1970 libncurses_g.a
i've never seen perms like this before. so far, it's affected libEterm,
libaudiofile, libcurses, libform, libgimp, libgimpui and quite a few
others.
how could something like this have happened????
