Wrong title (mgetty?) and wrong newsgroup. I think the group you are
looking for is something like comp.protocols.smb.

One thing you need for browsing in Network Neighborhood is a valid guest
account in samba (one listed in /etc/passwd) even if it does not have a
password. You also may need to disable encrypted passwords in Win98
registry to access password protected shares, but I am not familiar with
Win98 and the docs or proper newsgroup could fill you in on that.

Ideas ? Tons of ideas! What do you want to do ?
I'll assume you're putting ethernet cards with 10-base-T (or 100) and
connecting them all up with a hub.
Guess what ? Your linux boxes are probably all already setup to act as
an web server, ftp server and telnet server and X client and server
and your eveny those ms-win boxes are already setup for ftp client and
telnet client.

Want to setup your linux box to provide files space to the ms-win boxes
(as drive L: or whatever) ? Install and configure "samba".
Want to access printers on the linux boxes from ms-win, samba again.
Want to go the other way ? access the windows drives (shares) and
printers - samba again.

Want to bring up X applications on the ms-win boxes ? Install an
X-server software package. Hummingbird Exceed is excellent, but will
cost you about $ 500 per box. MiX isn't as fully featured, but it's
free (download).

Want to access X windows applications from win PCs without installing
ANYTHING on the PC (well, I'm assuming you've already got a java-enabled
browser like Netscape). Install "VNC". It's also a free download
(Olivetti/Oracle-Italy).

VNC is way cool and super easy to install.

Want to make the Linux boxes act as firewalls/gateways so that you can
connect one to your ISP and have simultaneous internet access on all
systems on your LAN ? Setup IP-Forwarding and IP-Masquerading on your
linux box.

Want to make your linux box the DNS for the LAN ? install bind.

The book "The Linux Network" (available at Barnes & Noble, etc.) may
come in handy. It covers all this stuff except VNC, but you don't need
a book for that.
If you can't spare the cash for the book ($ 40) the HOW-TOs contain all
you really need to know.

I imagine 'mc' (Midnight Commander) would do this in the console or I have
used fr (FileRunner) in X to ftp whole directory trees. I could not
figure out how to do it properly with ncftp.

Oops! I guess I should read more carefully before I post. For scripting
maybe you could look into the FTP perl module (I have not tried it).

For some unknown reason when I open a new console or vdm session something screws up
my numlock and the cursors become numbers. I am not a civil servant and have no need
for this shit. I like my cursors on the right side of the keyboard and nowhere else.
It is annoying to have to press on numlock to disable the numbers, I got enough of 10
below
the function keys.

Which file is the culprit in this so I can correct the problem?
And how do you get the end, home and del key to behave as they should?
They work in netscape but that's it.

Thanks in advance

I'm administering a Redhat Linux(5.2) system for a volunteer
organization and we've run into a very confusing problem with file
transfer: the server will not allow any file over around 100k to be
transferred on or off of it. For example ftp will transfer smaller
files but anything over around 100k will cause it to freeze. The
initial data is written to a file and it just stops. I then tried
emailing the file over and the problem is the same - eventually the
email was bounced. Note that this occurs for all users - regular and
root.

I've checked /proc/net/dev/ and the errors reported is 0.
/var/log/messages shows nothing and I've also checked every file on the
system using "rpm -V" to check for alterations from hacks and I don't
see anything too alarming. Finally two weeks ago I ended up
reinstalling the whole system to a brand new drive. While I was at the
site working on the server I could then transfer files without any
problem. However upon trying an ftp operation a few days later, the
problem continues just as before. I don't have easy access to the
server itself(it's being hosted as a favor in another location) so I
have not been able to test if file transfer would still work correctly
when logged in locally. I figure it's either a problem in the ethernet
card(InfoExpress) configuration or somehow the system has been
compromised (twice) and critical changes have been made (which I cannot
locate).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all,
James Brooks

Maybe these have already ben mentioned, but there is a program
called "wget" that will grab a site down the number of levels
you want.

I use a program called "wwwoffle" that stores web pages on my
Linux system that I have viewed with my web browser. It allows
you to then go back and view pages off line. It will also allow
you to grab a web site and how many levels down you want to go.

That ain't going to fix the problem unless there is a mysterious name for the delete
key that we don't know about.

This is moronic to have two keys do the exact same thing.

The option should be there (perhaps it is hidden in some sub-menu).
See the CONFIG_RTL8139 section in Documentation/Configure.help.
(By the way, we are now up to kernel 2.2.5.)

It is supposed to be generated automagically when you run
"make config" (or menuconfig, or xconfig, according to your taste.)

There is a minimum required level for tunelp to work with the 2.2.5
kernel. See...

The 3COM/U.S. Robotics 56K V90 External Faxmodem, model 5686 works great on
my system. Purchased from BUY.COM for $115.

On my system (RedHat 5.2) put the following line in the
/etc/rc.d/rc.serial file:

/bin/setserial /dev/ttyS0 spd_vhi.

The spd_vhi flag allows the modem to communicate with the PC at speeds over
38400bps on the serial port.

Greg Rudd

I am not quite sure what you are trying to do, but when I was trying to
print from a telnet session with my ISP (Solaris) back to a printer on my
Linux box, I used 'rlpr'. However, I could only get it to work using its
proxy daemon running on the Linux box. The 'rlpr' client compiled fine on
Solaris (which otherwise uses a totally different non-lpr printing
system).

Otherwise you might take a look at -n switch or tracefile in 'man telnet'
to see if something in there would at least copy output to a file that you
could edit and print.

You don't say what your 'x' is, but I have had no trouble at all with 4.08
in RedHat 5.2. But it seems to me 4.07 did have problems that persisted
after I updated Netscape-Communicator, until I realized that I also needed
the Netscape-common rpm. Since then everything has gone smoothly.

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that 4.08 in Linux is
similar to 4.5 in other OS's.
