Subject: setuid shell scripts
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 13:17:06 +0200
Hello!
I recently upgraded my old suse linux 5.3 to a newer 6.1 (kernel 2.2.5 I
believe) and now have the problem that shell-scripts with the setuid-bit set
do not work any longer (the effective user-ID is not changed when the script
runs).
Is that a new security feature and is there any way to enable setuid shell
scrips again?
Thanks a lot!

I'm using cdrecord with the 4224E, an ATAPI version, but I strongly
suspect that if one works the other will. I follow the plain
instructions in the CD Recording HOWTO and they work fine -- have you
tried it?

Subject: Help: Max No. of clients supported...
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 19:48:32 +0800
We are planning to run a Linux server in a school to provide file
service and Internet service. There are about 72 Win'98 clients that
are going to hook up to the server, and Samba and Apache are chosen to
support these services. These clients are divided into two groups. One
group has 37 clients and the other 35. These two groups belong to two
different subnets (Say, 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 and
192.168.2.0/255.255.255.0) Do you think a single Linux box with Samba
running is capable of supporting all these client machines? The Linux
box will have two network cards, each supporting a different subnet of
clients. The Linux box is made up of an Intel 350 Mhz CPU, 128M RAM,
and SCSI hard-drive (SCSI-2, I guess) and two generic NE2000 network
cards, installed with Mandrake Linux 6.0 BTW, the network is running on
coaxial cables... (Pretty old...)
Please help...

Hi Matt,

Yup - SIGTERM is the "please stop" signal. Apache is just telling you
that it's received the signal and is shutting down as requested.

Your Windows 95 box needs to know how to get a number from the name,
either through DNS or a hosts file. I believe in Win95 there's a
"hosts.sam" file somewhere: rename that to hosts and add your linux box
hostname/number. You may need to reboot the Win95 box afterwards. The
Linux DNS doesn't come into it, I suspect - it's getting from Win95 to
the Linux box that is the problem, by the sounds of it.

Have a look at freshmeat.net. Many of the new releases are listed there.

Yup. Some time ago though. I don't remember it having any major

Perhaps if you post some error messages? Say which version you're

I have set up my RedHat5.2 Linux box to accept dial up PPP connections
from a remote Win95 client, using autoPPP.
A couple of questions:
* Using my browser on Win95, I can access Apache/Linux using http://IP
address but not http://hostname. Do I need a caching nameserver or
something? Do these work OK on a standalone box? Currently, the PPP
options for the dial-up server have entries for external DNS lookup
servers. Given that the Linux box only has one modem, how can it even
use these anyway?
* Is there any way I can dial into the Linux box and get Apache to
display a certain html page. i.e. You don't have to enter an http://...
site address in the browser at the client side. Maybe some sort of ppp
script?
* What client programs can I use to access the Linux box and the
attached LAN?

Both, GNU tar and star have many advantages over other tars.
The most important is that they allow you to record
any file, files with holes in them and files of nearly
arbitrary name length.
Star in addtition by default will not overwrite a file on disk
that is not older than the file on tape. Star also includes
a powerful pattern matcher for about 15 years.
Star autodetects the tar archive type flavor and star also
finds out if the archive needs to be byte swapped.
If an archive is compressed, star will tell you which option to
use to uncomress the actual archive automatically......
Star is at:

Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 15:18:03 +0200
I am working on a pretty large C++ project that actually compiles on a
Ultra 10 Sun with Solaris SparcWorks 4.2:
The linking of the code compiled with debugging output takes over 90
minutes.
To speed up the compilation process I want to make the sources compile
on a much cheaper and faster high-end intel platform.
At the moment the sources do not compile under Linux g++ because of the
different template instantiation mechanisms used by SparcWorks 4.2
(Cfront model) and g++ (Borland model).
In the g++ documentation on http://egcs.cygnus.com/onlinedocs/gcc_5.html
there is a note that a future version of g++ will support a hybrid model
of the Borland and Cfront template instantiation mechanism.
Does anyone know what version of g++ this would be or when it will be
done?
Does anyone know a different way of compiling SparcWorks 4.2 sources on
an intel platform (e.g. using a different compiler or a different OS)?
p.s.: I know the g++ capabilities (-frepo and so on) but this would mean
too many changes to the sources.

What other servers are running on your server in addition to the Samba server?
Do your clients do I/O on the server very often? The coaxial cables in school
is giving us lots of headache because they're pretty old and the connections
seem to be rather loose... still thinking of a way to get around it.

Not to put you down Joerg. I use star for a few things, when I'm scripting,
(now the source is around ... I wouldn't look at it before that) and am
grateful for your contribution.
*The* big problem with star as far as I'm concerned is its rather
"interesting" slant on use of arguments. It's not even close to being a
drop-in replacement for `tar', and every time I try to use it I have to work
out just how. Normally I just don't bother. It's neither compatible with
tar, nor POSIXy.
cudcv (445) > star xvpf /dev/rmt/1
star: Must specify -x -c -u -r -t -n -diff.
cudcv (446) > star -xvpf /dev/rmt/1
star: Bad Option: -xvpf.
Oh, right, you need
cudcv (447) > star -xvp f=/dev/rmt/1
It's all very bizarre. Some things need a -, some things can't have one.
Some options need `option=argument' like the equally perverse `dd'. Some
options you can link together (-xvp), some you can't because they're expecting
more (-time). It all just feels very un-unixy.
Sorry Joerg, no offence meant, but I just hate it in these days of
standardisation and making things consistent. I don't use it because I can
never remember how.
