If the Mac is running mklinux or something, you need to put nameserver(s)
in /etc/resolv.conf (see 'man resolver'). If it is not running Linux you
need to read Mac help about how to enter nameservers or find a Mac
newsgroup. If not running any local DNS use your ISP's nameservers.

Sounds like you have graphical login enabled.
As root, edit the run-level in /etc/inittab to the run-level you want (I
think it is runlevel 3 for text login for Red Hat systems)
Also, even if you are stuck in Gnome (or any other flavour of
X-windows), you can always get to a text console by hitting
<ctrl>-<alt>-<Fx> (x=1 to 6)

Sounds like you're running xdm. Kill it, and edit your startup scripts.
I had this problem, and HAD to run xdm (startx wouldn't start x).

Yes. I have Linux booting from Win2000 boot manager to and the file
C:\bootsect.lnx.

I installed the newest LILO and everyting worked OK. Until I had to boot
Linux the next time. I got LIL-.

The fix was to start Linux and do a new

  dd if=/dev/hda5 of=/mnt/c/bootsect.lnx bs=512 count=1
  lilo

/dev/hda5 is my Linux / (root) and /mnt/c is the Win2000 C: drive.

Perhaps I should have explained what I want to do. I need to write a
unix shell script called by another program to send email attaching the
specified file. The file could be a binary file. It is an automated

I haven't used Pine, so I don't know what it does. Elm is an interactive

Hello,
since one of my partitions (and my hdd) is near full, i would
like to add a second HDD to my linux box. But i would like to a add
the entire new hdd to the old (existing) partition with the same name.
So, one partition would cover two hdds (a bit of the first and the
entire second one).

In other words: how can i enlarge a partition to cover a second disk?

That would mean that some file would be stored on the first hdd and
some on the second one, but all of them would seem to be in one
partition.

How can i do that?
Thanx,
Arash :-)

Actually; unless you're talking about the embedded linux project;
the linux kernel itself will not boot in anything less than an 386.
Nor will any of the apps (bash, gcc, etc) work
*Minix* (http://www.minix.org), however will run on an 8088.

Hi
Len and Ron, although using RedHat I hat similar problems:

> >>I play sounds fine from the command line etc, but nothing
> >> under KDE in the way of system sounds.

The problem has to do with KDE innsisting on its own (k-)audioServer and
relying on kwmsound to be running. I finally have generated two symbolic
LINKs, one to /usr/bin/kaudiserver and one to /usr/bin/kwmsound
and have put both links into KDE's Autostart-folder. When I am regular
user 'kurt' that folder is

  /home/kur/Desktop/Autostart

Of course, each user should put those links into her/his
Autostart-folder in order to participate the wondeful world of sounds.

Now, after restarting the xserver and KDE, in the window of your KDE
Control Center, the tree-node 'Sound' should contain the entry 'System
Sounds' (besides 'Bell'). After clicking 'System Sounds' make sure to
have the EnableSystemSounds-checkbox checked, and of course, to have
some 'Events' assigned to 'Sounds' instead of '(none)'.

Hope that helps.
Still I am looking for a solution that does NOT need the help of the
Autostart-folder ...

ciao,
    Kurt.

Going from my expierience with an SB128 (using the kernel es1370
support) in SuSE..

in /opt/kde/bin/startkde I had to change the lines

        startifaudio kaudioserver
        startifaudio kwmsound

  to
        kaudioserver &
        kwmsound &

Sound then worked without a problem.
also chechk to make sure the users have have access to the various

Hello to all:

I recently installed the latest version of Slackware (which includes
Kernel 2.2.14) on my Dell Dimension XPS D233 system at home, and have an
HP Deskjet 722 color printer attached. I've often had problems
tweaking the /etc/printcap file to talk to printers, and now, again, is
no exception.

If someone has this model printer working with their system, please
email me or post your /etc/printcap, and suggest anything else I might
want to tweak to enable my system to print.

On a side note, I also have a SCSI Iomega Zip drive on an Adaptec 2920
card which is seen on probe, but am having problems mounting Zip disks
as filesystems. The disks are DOS, but mount /dev/sda /zip will
successfully mount the disk, though the drive will be activated.
mount -t msdos /dev/sda /zip will prompt back a message of wrong file
system, etc. Any help here would also be appreciated.

Thanks much.

Your printer is a "winprinter", so there's a touch more to it than tweaking
your printcap. You'll need to install the pbm2ppa program (search freshmeat
or rpmfind) - read the READMEs carefully. After that, it should work fine.

Here is part of a shell script that I use with Red Hat Linux 6.0. Of
course, you will need to modify it to suit your needs.

# Check if modem is connected. If so, just quit and let things happen.
if [ -f /var/lock/LCK..modem ] ; then
echo $DATE "Modem connection is up." >> $OUT_FILE_N
    exit 0
fi

If connected, this script just exits here

Here, I will dial up a ppp connection on PPP0. I then ping the
connection I will be wanting to see if it is really up.

# Dial up ISP. Wait to be sure connection is really established. Give it

# two chances with ping. If it does not work, we will try again next
time.
echo "Dial ISP" >> $OUT_FILE
/usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 up
sleep 120
if [ -f /var/lock/LCK..modem ] ; then
    if /bin/ping -qc 1 $SETI_URL >> $OUT_FILE_N 2>&1 ; then
echo "Modem connection seems up [1]: wakeup setiathome." >>
$OUT_FILE_N
    elif /bin/ping -qc 1 $SETI_URL >> $OUT_FILE 2>&1 ; then
        sleep 5
echo "Modem connection seems up [2]: wakeup setiathome." >>
$OUT_FILE
    else
        echo "Cannot ping" $SETI_URL >> $OUT_FILE
        /usr/sbin/usernetctl ppp0 down
        exit 1
    fi

I hope this helps.

This is on my list of things to do. In fact I'm almost ready with the first

-
-So, far the following tasks need to be accomplished:
-
-- the box is basically going to be a head-less PC

Yes. It's the only cost effective mechanism right now. I'm using an all in one
MB to get low profile. With the disk, sound, and even video interfaces
onboard, the RAM is the tallest part.

-- linux will act as the OS, which means no swap space, mount filesystem read

Both of the choices are debatable. ext2 is much more robust in the event of
a FS crash. The login is irrelavent because you can simply start start the
player application at boot time bypassing the login process.

-- the actual mp3 player must be command-line driven and will be called from
-the bash init scripts. It will always start playing the same playlist file
-(m3u) randomly. (the player must include command-line parameters to do
-this)

This is a part I'm still working on. RIght now I have mpg123 on my home player
but it takes its arguments from the command line. Not sure if a server type
app that allows for dynamic changes is available.

Also I want to have much more precise control over the playlists. I'd like
to be able to have multiple categories for songs and then be able to
dynamically switch between categories. Also every song should be automatically
attached to the artist and album category for the song, along to the favorite
songs for that particular artist and album. So if during the random play of
a particular list you come across an artists or album that strikes you as
pleasing you can immediately switch to just that artist or album.

This is going to require a bit of work. But first things first.

-- the sound card will be either a creative sound blaster (one of the first)
-or whatever is integrated on this Cyrix 6x86MX motherboard I have laying
-around.

That's what I thought but the CMI 8330 has given me nothing but fits. It
sounds horrible with the OSS drivers and I can't get the ALSA drivers to
compile. I'm at the point now of trying out a new all in one MB.

-- I'd like to eventually add an LCD screen to the parallel port for ID3
-output (any ideas???)

There are definitely resources out there. For pricy premade modules take a
peek at Matrix Orbital (http://www.matrix-orbital.com) for their PC-inserts
which is a complete solution. But well over $100 a pop.

If you want to invest some sweat equity there is a kit from BGMicro
(www.bgmicro.com) called PIC-n-LCD which gives a preprogrammed microcontroller
and crystal that will drive the LCD with a serial interface. If you're handy
with a soldering iron, a complete kit with LCD, uC + crystal, MAX232, and
a PCB to install it all on can be had for $40, Another possibility is a
serial interface board from Marlon P. Jones (http://www.mpja.com) for $20
that comes already assembled and they even throw in a 1 line by 8 char LCD
(These work up to 20x4 BTW)

But think serial port, not parallel.

-- there has to be some mechanism to upload more songs. By using FAT16, I
-can just yank out the hard disk and pop it in my Win95 machine, where I keep
-Napster. Or possibly give the machine a modem and set up a null modem
-network, but that would make it heavier and more expensive.

Actually the solution I'm thinking about is wireless. There are several
wireless systems available for Linux. I'm looking at the Webgear Aviator 2.4
package which I can get intown for $150. 2 cards, 2 PCMCIA adapters, 2 Mbps
transfer rate, and linux drivers are its features. Then the car MP3 player
simply becomes a part of your home network. You'll be able to telnet, ftp,
even connect to the car's web server to manage it. Also may give you another
display interface path later on by using a handheld computer with a wireless
card to interact with the unit.

-
-If anyone has any suggestions, hints or help, feel free to send me a
-message. When I finish this I plan to release my plans for FREE! None of
-this 20 buck crap. Peace.

Good. One thing you didn't mention is a power supply. I know you're probably
thinking of using an inverter and a regular PC power supply. However MP Jones
is currently selling a $15 laptop supply that'll take car 12V input and
produce the PC voltages required to drive the MB. I've heard reports that
they work great. I personally ended up building my own supply using
RadioShack.com parts (the National Semiconductor simple switcher parts)
but I may still get a couple of these laptop PS to test out.
