To remove a package you must use its correct name. When Netscape is
installed, it's as you see below.
Try:
rpm -e netscape-4.05-2
instead if you want to remove the package.

You're last sentence is exactly the problem. The exchange admins won't
enable it. My company is a Microsoft Solution Provider and as far as I
know I'm the only one in the company who is using Linux, so it'll be a
tough sell to say the least. Does anyone know if the Exchange client
will run under wine? Just thought of that, haven't researched it so
maybe that might be an option?

There was a change with parallel ports with kernel 2.2.x. If you had your
system configured for lp1, in 2.2.x, it is now lp0. So maybe you need to
edit your printcap files, etc... to change everything. Also, the dmesg
should tell you what port it is polling.

Need Pros and cons of debian over redhat...
Currently using the Redhat linux 5.2. I saw that LSL had released latest

Is migration from redhat to debian advisable??

Subject: Problems installing glibc 2.0.7 with SUSE 6.0
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 19:19:59 +0200
Hi,
I'm trying to install StarOffice 5.0 on my SUSE 6.0 Linux system but I
can't get it done
because of library problems. I tried to install the glibc 2.0.7
libraries both manually and
automatically (using soprep) but in all cases my Linux system is not
accesible anymore.
Normal commands like ls or mv cannot be found anymore, I can't login
anymore, etc.
This is in short what happens: Everytime the original runtime Linker
"ld-linux.so.2" is
removed, my system stops functioning. When I (after booting a rescue
system) copy the new
runtime linker to "/lib" my system is still not functioning. Only
reinstalling the original
"ld-linux.so.2" restores my system.
I'm very sure I'm doing exactly what has to be done according to glibc
2.0.7 libraries
README but I cannot get it done. Does anyone know a solution for this or
does this mean I
cannot use StarOffice 5.0 with SUSE 6.0 Linux?
I hope someone can help me with this problem because I don't know it
anymore.
Thanks!
Berry

The promise Ultra33 is natively supported by Linux from about Kernel 2.0.*
and up. If you've got the Ultra66 however, you'll have to do some tweaking.
Check out the Ultra DMA howto. There's one here:
http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/mini/Ultra-DMA.html
Just follow the howto for the Promise Ultra33 - it works the same way.

I have the following set up
____________ ______________ _______________

| INTERNET |------| Linux Box |------------| Private PC |
|____________| |______________| | |_______________|
eth0 eth1 | 192.168.0.2

192.168.0.3
I have a public Ip address of 1.1.1.1 and 1.1.1.2
1.1.1.1 is used for the linux box and name server on the linux box.
The linux box is setup so that it gateways the internal PC fine. I have
used IPFWADM to do that and can communicate with the outside world OK.
But What I would like to do is to get the linux box accepting the IP
address 1.1.1.2 on eth0 and translate it to 192.168.0.3 on eth1 so that
I can see my webserver internally and from the outside world but so I
can run it though the linux box so that Log's can be keeped.

Folks,
I understand the basics of how to use umask, but I haven't a clue as
to whether or not it can be used to ADD execute privileges (running RedHat
5.2 with 2.2.2 kernel). Ultimately, I'd like 775 privileges on everything
on a group development machine. It would be nice to do this with umask (or
something like it?), but I don't know if I can, or if I'm stuck with doing
a "chmod -R 775 ."

I have been using shell scripts to conduct simple telnet sessions with
open news servers, but suddenly the scripts have stopped working with
all servers. A check of the telnet binary with ls -l shows no recent
datestamp, so it probably hasn't changed.
Here's an example that has worked reliably, but now the telnet
link responds only to the open news.host.com command (eliciting the
Welcome message), and doesn't respond to the group or xhdr commands.
#!/bin/bash
{
echo open news.host.com 119
sleep 15
echo group comp.unix.questions
sleep 10
echo xhdr subject 66978-
sleep 45
echo quit
} | telnet > subj
This change appeared after 3 days of "system unavailable" so I'm wondering
whether there could be system-wide shell or telnet option changes that
might have effected this, and that I should reset? (Would it be feasible
that the default suspend character has somehow been set to cr so that a
telnet session is being suspended by the cr terminating the first line of
command input?) Used interactively from the keyboard, all works perfectly.
My unix account is on a free public access net, so there is no user
support to give advice. Can the experts here help please?

Subject: Running a linux FTP through an ISP's Firewall
Date: Mon, 12 Apr 1999 15:34:26 GMT
I have been trying to set up an FTP server on my ADSL line. My ISP, Telus,
has a firewall and I needed to bypass it as it would not take standard port
connections (ie. 21 for FTP and 20 for FTP data channel). I found the
appropriate services on my linux box and successfully changed the port
addresses. Now my FTP is operating on ports 2121 FTP and 2120 FTP-data.
Everything appeared to be going fine until I asked some of my friends to test
it. My friends with dial-up connections were able to connect on these higher
port connections under active FTP mode (but not passive), but my friends with
cable modems and ADSL lines could login, but could not get a directory
listing to appear under either active or passive FTP modes. This may be due
to an illegal port connection error message which shows up.
I speculate that the problem has to do with the fact that the computers are
trying to connect with IP addresses that are their home computers and not the
Internet's IP address. Another Problem that i noticed was that when a
computer tries to connect over the internet via passive mode it uses the IP
address of my linux box's external interface (the network card that connects
me to my cable modem) and not the Internet IP address that is assigned to me
by Telus (the one people connect to).
How can I get my friends with Cable/ADSL lines to connect? (With linux and
Windows 98)
Sincerely,
Jeff

If the provide instructions don't work (and you're sure you prepared
OK), contact the driver author so he knows it's broken. He'll help
you out too, probably.
Did you follow all the 2.2 preparation stuff before building the 2.2
kernel? People have prepared help on that which you can find from
http://www.aa.net/~swear/pedia/kernel.html
autoconf.h was in RH52's kernel-headers-2.0.36-0.7 RPM, but I have
no idea whether you're wasting your time trying to use it with your
driver under kernel 2.2.

Hi,
No, you don't have to apply both the device and the mountpoint in the
command.
As long as you are going to mount per defaultvalues (fstab) the mountpoint
will be sufficient, example: mount /mnt/cdrom or mount /mnt/floppy.
If you're going to mount for example a floppy with a different filesystem
than declared in fstab, then you'll have to supply device, filesystem and
mountpoint.

I would suggest that this is a job for Perl, and

:>Yes, but is this a book that starts from scratch? I already know C++, I need

:>practical life preferrably a book that takes C++ from a Linux perspective.

Mmm, distribution war eminent. Cross-posted, followups set to

As a Debian user in a community of mostly Red Hat people, I think
Debian is superior, for a few reasons:
-- Centralized repository of high-quality packages
-- Working backwards compatibility to libc5 systems
-- Commitment to Open Source/Free Software
As an ex-Slackware junkie, Debian appeals to me as having both a
working package system and the ability to muck around in configuration
things without having my hand held. Though that's probably just me. :-)
Al> Is migration from redhat to debian advisable??
If you've got a reasonable amount of experience playing with
Linux/Unices in general, I'd suggest at least trying Debian. While
Red Hat is a good introductory Linux, the impression I've gotten is
that Debian is better for more experienced users.

So that's not the problem. Anything else to check?

Thank you for the response. (Your English was perfect in this post.)
