hello,
assume we have linux running on a server and we are connecting to it using a
terminal
emulator from a windows client to run programs, assume again that our
windows pc
is old and very flaky (freezes a lot etc. bad ram etc.) how will this affect
the data on the linux box since we are running a time sharing system and all
we are doing is connecting to the box and sending screen and keyboard
emulations, while the actual processes are being run on the linux server.

thank you,
kenny.

ps. sorry for double posting this topic.

Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 14:22:54 -0500

I am running Netscape 4.5 on a Linux computer. I want to set it up so
that when I download a gzipped postscript file, ghostview automatically
runs to view the file. This works for me as root, but logged in as a
user it does not work. In fact, when I edit my netscape preferences as
a user, they are not saved. It seems to me this is likely caused by a
file permission error or something. can Anyone give me some pointers on
how to resolve this problem.

Thanks,

There is a command-line only napster client called Nap.

You can probably find it on www.freshmeat.net or www.rpmfind.net
It's got a pretty high learning curve, but once you get used to it,
its really fast and easy.

Hope this helps.

Subject: install kernel from rpm fails ( doesn't boot )
Date: Mon, 15 Jan 2001 20:32:34 +0100

Hello,

I installed kernel-2.4.0-0.43.12-i686.rpm, not as an upgrade but
additional to 2.2.16-22. But when I boot from the new kernel I get this:

request-modules[block-major-3]: root fs not mounted

VFS:cannot open root device "305" or 03:05

please append a correct "root= " boot option

kernel panic: VFS : unable to mount root fs on 03:05

.... and booting stops, I just have to reset the puter.

This is part of my lilo.conf :

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.0-0.43.12
                label=new_linux
                read-only
                root=/dev/hda5

Notice that 2.2.16-22 works with no probs and also starts with
                root=/dev/hda5

All help welcome.

Thanks

I am aware of no defaults for scsi. You (as root) might do a
grep -r nameoftheseagatemodule in the /etc directory to see if it in any
setup file. Is the Seagate module compiled into the Kernel? Also, do things
work if you load your module using the modprobe command. Finally, are you
sure the subject module is resident on your system?

I'll second that, and provide two other options:

If you do not mind another machine, but don't want the second
monitor and keyboard on your desk, look into VNC from
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ It's free software that lets you
view a Windows desktop in a window under X, or, working the other way,
an X desktop in a window (or full-screen) under Windows. It's not as
fast as being on the console, but it's faster than vmware is on my
450MHz K6-2 with 256M of RAM (which is quite usable).

I've not tried it, but I've read about a less expensive alternative to
vmware called win4lin, at http://www.netraverse.com/ It looks
interesting.

I installed Linux on my Compaq Presario 1685 this
weekend. I used ManDrake 7.2. This distribution
comes with Linux 2.2.17, I needed the newer 2.2.18
kernel to properly use my Synaptics Touchpad PS/2
mouse. I downloaded the newest 2.2.x kernel and
recompiled it on my 1685. Everything works, except
DVD movies. I also used ALSA for my sound system.

Slackware 7.1 allows you to do the smallest, tightest
most customized installation, but it requires more
reading and learning and decision making. Use it as
soon as you are comfortable with configuring linux
and you will be able to maximize linux on your
Presario 1610.

You are right. Our LAN is very small. So we have no robots apart from
me ;-). But in the meantime another problem came up. Nowadays hard
disks big and cheap. Since the workstations have those >40GB, how to
keep up with an 12GB streamer?
I thought it would be good to make a complete backup by using drive
image because they are win-boxes and stream the created file. But also
I think streaming that spans multiple tape is a bad idea. Even if I
partition the win clients in system / programs / data, it almost seems
to be more effecient to use changeable hard disks of massive size to
do the backup. How about this?
To top all this a colleague of mine argued that streamer tapes would
wither within months so that tapes made half a year ago could be
corrupted. I cant imagine that since IMHO tape streaming counts to the
most reliable method.

Thank you for your attention

What is your experience? Is his machine simply bad configured or do
one need more power than this to run vmware smoothly?

I have vmware running on a 128mb PIII-500. It runs fine; faster than

A little off topic:
Isnt that an evidence that SCSI is no longer the superior technology?
What makes these devices apart from IDE devices?
I think it is the same hardware using another hardware interface. And
therefore one should be as reliable as the other.
Apart from the ability to attach more than four drives what justifies

I've noticed something odd with netscape 4.7x, where "x" is any
digit they've released. At some point during a netscape session,
links quit working -- that is, clicking on a link only changes
the color of the link but doesn't actually take me to the link.
I can't remember seeing this with 4.7, but all of the versions
since then seem to have this behavior. In order to get good
behavior, I have to quit, then kill, then restart netscape.

Anyone else notice this? Anyone got a workaround?

Thanks....

I'd simply switch xterm into vt220-keyboard mode and use that (the
default is PC-style).

The XFree86 xterm supports ANSI color and VT220 emulation
There's an faq at

(ymmv - some distributors clutter up the xmodmap and X resources with
