AutoPPP does not call options files, pppd does.
man pppd

Nope.
There are two variants to the GPL. The GPL itself and the LGPL.
The LGPL allows you to link to existing GPL Libraries whilst keeping your
own code to yourself (if you so wish).

This is how StarOffice and Wordperfect exist as commercial software.
(They'll be linked to the glibc2 or libc6 libraries without actually
containing any GPL code themselves).

Nonsense. What are you trying to read it with? I used to do
that all the time and it worked just fine.

You do realize that if you want to transfer data to another
computer in raw tar format, you have to have a copy of tar on
the destination machine?

>i have been very successful using tar floppies to move data between my

And I used to use tar floppies to move stuff between Unix and
MS-DOS and/or Windows 3.x. Worked great.

If you want to do this, MKS tooking not only includes a
functional version of tar, but also tons of other utilities
(including ksh and csh). I presume that gnu tar is also
available for Win32.

I've downloaded and installed the GNU screen program, 3.7.4. Firing it
up manually, it works fine. No problem. This under AIX 4.3.2.

What I'd like to do is have it fire up 'automagically' when a certain
user logs in and spawn say a half-a-dozen screen sessions. These should
then be launched in a specific directory to load the application we're
running on the system. In other words, one login on this ID will produce
6 'virtual' logins to the same program.

What file(s) do I need to set up to make this work along the lines
suggested here?

Thanks in advance.

Win9x will rewrite the master boot record which will, if you don't
correct it, make Linux inaccessible. However, if you have a rescue disk
available, you can install / reinstall LILO and recover your access to
Linux. See the HOWTOs for more details on coexisting with Win9x, as
there are additional complications.

You might also look into Wine and VMWARE as they may offer what you
need within Linux. Also, you might keep your old computer around for
Win9x as a solution.

How would I know if my linux installation detected the card ? I thought
that once I indicated that the module was to be loaded by removing the
comment in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules it should load. Shouldn't the 3c95x
module work for this card ?

Make sure mount is set-uid root:

$ ls -l `which mount`
-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 52788 Apr 17 12:54 /bin/mount
$

Note that the error message is NOT saying you have to be root to mount
/win/d,
it is saying you have to be root to use mount at all.

# chmod 5755 /bin/mount

You sound confused.

If you want to prevent access to the X-Server on your Linux box, use
the xhost command. This will allow you to control which machines can
access the Linux display (eg. to pop up a windown on your Linux box's
monitor).

If instead you are interested in controlling who can use the XDM
server (which is apparently running on your Linux box) to log in from
a remote X-server (eg. a PC running Exceed) and send graphical output
to the remote X-Server (note: this has absolutely nothing to do with
the X-Server running on the Linux box), then you need to edit the XDM
config file (or use a GUI tool). In Redhat systems the config file
is at /etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess (do a man xdm to get more info).

Subject: DOSemu configuration
Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 16:33:22 -0400

Hi Group,

I have need to run the dos emulator as a regular user. I need also to
communicate through one of the serial ports (com1). I hav set up
dosemu.conf, etc. well enough that if logged in as root, I can run dos and
run my software that talks to the modem on com1. If however I am logged
in as a non-root user, dos will boot, my dos software tries to run, but it
can't communicate with the comm port.

While searching for clues, I looked at the owner and group of the serial
port lock file that dosemu created. If I am logged in as root then
owner=uucp and group=uucp. When logged in as non-root user then
owner=root, group=users. I am running the original "suid" copy of
dosemu. This is a recent installation of RH6.0

I hope that someone out there can set me in the right direction. I have
searched the DOSEMU HOW-TOs, and everything else that I could find, but
none explain well enough how to set up dosemu.users, perhaps dosemu.conf,
or whatever.

Thanks for your help.

Either unset INPUTRC or rename /etc/inputrc. The /etc/inputrc
Red Hat ships with 6.0 is badly broken.

Normal unix programs let you also combine one single char
option that takes an argument by putting it at the end
of the boolean list. Programs that don't are surprising.
Sysadmins don't like surprises.

>It's just the other way round: the historical tar is not unix like.

Being able to omit the - for the options or use multiple arguments
stacked in the order that the option letters appear delves into
pre-history.

>Star started with a consistent option parser in 1982!

The main reason I like GNUtar is that its --listed-incremental
mode actually gets incrementals right even if you rename a
directory, and when you restore the incremental you can
(optionally) delete files that were deleted between the
full and incremental runs. Does star have equivalent functions?
