Date: Thu, 21 Sep 2000 17:19:33 +0200
Hi,
i've some problems with my windoze 98se partition:
if i create a file (with linux) on a win98se partition it shows correct
under linux. it also does under windoze but if i check the filesystem with
norton disk doctor (or scandisk...) it says illegal filename fix it ?
if i click on fix it, it renames the file to its dos (8.3 style) filename...
anybody knows what i do wrong ? is this a problem on how to mount the
windoze partition ?
i use auto with the automounter under SuSE 7.0 Pro...

I had the same problem, I needed to add monitor resolutions to the
config file, i picked them from the old config file section screen.
I found some information at www.nvidia.com.

I'm looking at putting in a couple of HP Netserver LH 3000, and I'm
looking for opinions on the performance of their NetRaid controller
with lots of drives, eg 12 drives striped and mirrored into 3 logical
drives. ESPECIALLY if anyone has seen comparisons against the
Mylex ExtremeRaid 1100 controllers.
We've been not terribly thrilled with the Netraid running SCO
Openserver 5, but that could be the SCO filesystem.

TCP Wrappers tries various methods to make sure that your machine actually
is who it says it is before allowing a connection:
1) ip to name resolution - tcpd looks for a PTR record from it's DNS
servers.
2)name to ip resolution - tcpd then looks for the A record for that name,
looking for a match with the results of 1)
3) If tcpd was compiled to do so, it will use an AUTH inquiry to attempt to
identify the user.
See Vilmos and Stefan's recommendations to fix 1 and 2. If you are doing
AUTH lookups, you will have a delay while the AUTH lookup times out for a
Win client, and Win doesn't support inetd.

I think it should be possible. Just mount the partition, copy
the compressed kernel image to the DOS/NTFS filesystem, and
edit /etc/lilo.conf. However, it is important that make sure
that no defrag will move the kernel image on the DOS/NTFS drive.

One thing you do wrong is that you give the file a name that does not
fit into what the specification of the file system on the Windows
partition thinks is legal. Don't do that.
You might also have mounted it as having the wrong file system type.
What does Windows say about the file system type of the partition?

LILO can boot from any file system. Just be sure the partition is mounted
when you run /sbin/lilo.
You need to put more than just the kernel image below the 1024 cylinder limit,
in, say, your DOS partition:
vmlinuz
boot.b
map <- file created by /sbin/lilo
With all three below cylinder 1024, you may use versions of lilo earlier than
21.2.

FYI, I'm running RedHat 6.2.
I want to shutdown a process (oracle) when I shutdown my system. I've
added a "script" to /etc/rc.d/init.d that handles start/stop/status just
like all the other things in there (httpd, etc.). My script works at
startup and I can do "/etc/rc.d/init.d/oracle stop" from the command
line. I've added links in run-levels 0 and 6, but it just won't shutdown
when I do do "shutdown -r" or "shutdown -h". Argh! What do I need to do
to make my process shutdown?

You added e.g. an S90oracle script? Then you should have a K90oracle
script in the same run-level directories too... Both should be
symlinks to the script in /etc/rc.d/init.d. I think that's the way it
works in Red Hat too (I use Debian).

I reread the FAQ and redid my ftpaccess file but to no avail (same problem). Oddly
enough though, I can download files from the server's /home/ftp/pub directory even
though I specified no uploading in the same access file. It seems that the
/etc/ftpaccess file is being completely ignored??? Regardless, it seems that I can
download from it but cannot upload to it which is what I want to do.
Perhaps I am going about this the wrong way. What I actually want to do is to be
able to transfer files from my internal network to my web server in the /home/ftp/pub
directory. I don't really need to give anyone else ftp access.
If I comment out aftp from both /etc/services and the /etc/inetd.conf, the connection
is refused so I know of no other way to allow ftp to this server.
One other thing...I installed and am using the TIS firewall proxies and configured my
/etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services file accordingly
Here's my updated ftpaccess file

IIRC, hard links can only reside on the same filesystem as the
target. If the link and the target are on different filesystems
you need to use a soft link.

Yes,I am agree with u!
My suggestion is that you can reside your boot parition under 1024 cylinders
but all
your other partitions to behind 8 GB.(1024 cyclinders equal 8 GB
approximately).
My meaning is that you needn't let a operating system's different paritions
be all together!
Just seperate them.Make their boot partition before 1024 cylinders will be
enough!

It's not too difficult. Just mount the DOS partition and copy the
kernel image there (mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/dos ; cp /boot/vmlinuz
/mnt/dos/vmlinuz) and set up /etc/lilo.conf like so:
map=/mnt/dos/map
[...]
image=/mnt/dos/vmlinuz
label=linux
then run lilo. You should use either ATTRIB.EXE or mattrib to mark
those files within the DOS partition as "hidden", "system", and
"read-only" so they don't get stepped on by DEFRAG.EXE.
BTW, this will probably not work too well on NTFS as the mechanism of
writing to NTFS partitions is still experimental.

you connect via PPP/cable modem/LAN/whatever, the output of the command

There should be a "default" destination, and that should be pointing at
your PPP server if you're using a modem, or your default gateway if
you're on a LAN.

Slow down here... if your cable modem isn't working, there are all kinds
of things other than the network card that could be causing the problem.
Does your provider use DHCP? Have you followed the directions in the
Cable Modem HOWTO? http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Cable-Modem/index.html
for that.
The reason I ask is because the 3c90x driver has never worked properly
for me on a series of 3Com90x cards. The 3c59x one has always worked.
If you can do "modprobe 3c59x" and see no errors appear on the command
line, the problem is not with the 3c59x driver.
