Particularly when the GUI akwardly emulates a limited command line shell,
incurring the penalties for akward interface plus requiring that the user
still know the command syntax. In practical terms, the only way for a GUI
to do many command lineish things is to emulate a command prompt, and using
a GUI to, generally poorly, emulate a command prompt, is even less useful
than using emacs for the sole purpose of emulating vi.
>(though, in the case of having to type the abomination

Except that there is an even better way to do it via a command line shell
by aliasing the beast to something simple and descriptive (like "mess") or
turning the whole thing into a shell script.

Do you have the noexec option set in fstab for this file system?
If so the kernel will not respect the x attribute on the file.

I've played with many of the free SQL database tools (mSQL, MySQL, and
Postgress) and while they are very well suited for non-critical,
low-volume use they are not in any way suitable for stable, high
volume usage.
Of course, there is no substitute for experimentation, and since all
three products are free, I suggest you try each one out, populate the
database with some dummy data, and simulate an expected load.
Btw, you can also download free evaluation copies of both Sybase and
Oracle for comparison. Furthermore, if I interpret the Linux license
of Sybase properly, it seems to be perfectly legal to use the
evaluation copy of Sybase under Linux even for installed commercial
applications. You do not, however, get any support, and its use is at
your own risk.

Try:
alias errors='view /usr/src/linux-2.0.30/include/asm-i386/errno.h'
Unless RM/Cobol has its own error reporting scheme, it's opening a file
on a read-only file system.

The original file was created on Solaris machine. And the function

solved doubling the ULIMIT within /etc/login.defs. Thanks for any

I downloaded the large file (23MB-WordPerfect.tar.gz) rename the file to
Wordperfect.tar
and did " tar -zxvf WordPerfect.tar" as you mentioned and the installation was
perfect..

I'm trying to set up a RedHat Linux 5.1 box as a firewall for my LAN. I've
got one network card running perfectly fine, but can't seem to get the
second one recognized.
I've gone into linuxconf and set up both eth0 and eth1 properly and I
activated the cards. I tried passing some boot-time commands, but nothing
I've done will work. I tried typing in an ifconfig command for eth1, but
that doesn't work either.
I'm running on a Compaq Prolinea 466 (just a 486/66) with 16 megs of RAM.
The card that works is an Intel EtherExpress Pro 100B card using the
eepro100 kernel module. The second card is an Intel EtherExpress Pro 10+
also using the eepro100 kernel module. I plan to use the 100 mb/s card for
the connection to my local LAN, and the 10 mb/s card for the connection to
the ISDN router.
Any help would be appreciated!

Try 'ldd ./wine' :-) I bet there will be some dynamic library missing.
Most probable cause would be that the binary is compiled for libc6
and you only have libc5 on your system ...

There are some differences between what is available at what time for
them, amounting to advantages in each direction depending on exactly
what it is that you want.
There is some tendancy for "cutting edge" stuff to have packages
"slapped together" a little more quickly for Red Hat, which means that
you'll have a buggy version available a bit quicker. This sort of thing
happens most with things like GNOME, EGCS, and XFree86.
Frankly, there is *not yet* a full release of GNOME for Debian yet; this
fact is nicely reflective of the "real world" fact that GNOME, not
unlike KDE, needs further attention to system integration before it
becomes *dead easy* to get installed. The RPM versions of GNOME take a
bit of kicking and screaming to get them working with Red Hat; they
won't be a part of Debian until they don't take 'kicking and
screaming.'
Debian is *dead* easy to upgrade, once installed; you can do automatic
upgrades of packages with pretty decent safety. You can even do "major
version" upgrades automatically with reasonable confidence, which, with
Red Hat, I'd tend to eschew in favor of doing a fresh install. With
Debian, it is very clean to do incremental upgrades.
I've been very impressed with Debian thus far.
