Hi Svend,
You could copy the ".config" file from a working linux tree to the new
linux-2.2.5 tree, and running "make oldconfig". Those questions which are
duplicated between the older version of Linux and the newer distribution of
the kernel are skipped, with input requested only for new options. I do
not
beleive this exists with the "make xconfig", but I am not sure.

Hi
I downloaded some programs from www.linuxberg.com, and there were two
formats: tgz.gz and tgz, but i cant extract any of these, the program
extract one file (I think the first in the archive) and gives an error
message.Unfortunately now I cant remember what is and the syntax I
used. Well, if anyone knows a command to extract those files, please
tell me.

I'm new in the Linux world and just installed Linux on my machine. I'm
trying to get Xwindows to work properly, but as of now all I can get is VGA
colors. I have a Real3d Starfighter AGP card, not in the setup menu of
choices for Xwindows. Can anyone tell me where I could find the driver for
this graphics card? I know it exists because the real3d home page says to
go to ftp.redhat.com.... but the site seems to be down. Also, does Xwindows
support aweSoundblaster64 (or any soundblaster, for that matter)? How do I
configure Xwindows to use the soundblaster if it is supported?

Does anyone know if the Linux version of Oracle 8 is free? The FAQ
on their site has a statement along the lines of "we feel that people
would in fact be willing to pay for quality linux applications, blah,
blah..", but all you have to do is register with their mailing list crap
to get straight to the download section. It's such a huge download
though, I wanted to see before I download it if anyone knows for a fact
that it's free (and not a time-limited trial or something).

If I try to make a POP3 connection to my Linux box (Redhat 5.2) the
connection fails. Trying to get in with a Telnet to port 110 fails too.
It seems to timeout. Sendmail itself appears to be working, the pop
user's account is "enabled" in linuxconf, mail sent to the user's
account gets placed in the user's mailbox, there are no restrictions set
in /etc/hosts.deny or hosts.allow....
Can anybody think of anything else to check?

I just found out about VMware today, and have been studying its web site.
Basically you install VMware on Linux. Then the standard way to proceed is
to install any support "guest" O/S you want on a Linux file / virtual disk.
But they do say you can use a raw disk partition instead of a Linux virtual
disk. They also say that this is a new capability, somewhat experimental,
and therefore it might have more problems. I don't have the exact page
address, but poking around their site I saw lots of info. They also seem to
have their own discussion group (hint).

I don't want to start yet another holy war on distributions. Please keep
your comments sensible. Thanx.
I would like to install and play with linux. I am pretty good with
computers, with some programming experience. I've played with unix
machine at school (IRIX server), read lots of FAQs on linux, and
distribution how-to's. I get the sense that RH is most popular and
probably the easiests to set up. But I would like something less
"packaged" so that I could get a change to "get my hands dirty" so to
speak. I figure that way I would learn more than if things were just
set up for me, ready to run.
So, here I am, debating perhaps I should go with Slackware, or maybe
Debian. I don't know too much about other distributions (like SuSE and
such). What I would like is your comment on the strength and weaknesses
of various distributions. Thanks in advance.

Here are several points to consider:
1. As MP wrote, ppp-on is a script, not an option to pppd. Depending on how
your path variable is set, you may need to run ppp-on from a prompt as:
# ./ppp-on
2. The scripts that come with ppp-2.3.3 assume you have a path to /etc/ppp. If
you have not set up such a path, you need to change the string "exec pppd" in
the sample ppp-on to "exec /usr/sbin/pppd"; and change "exec chat" in the
sample ppp-on-dialer to "exec /usr/sbin/chat".

The Ghostscript hpdj and cdj670 drivers will work... after
a fashion. The hpdj will print everything except color at 600x600
dpi (though the printer is capable of it...). The cdj670 will print
at all resolutions, but the color is faded. You can also try the
other drivers that come with the cdj670 (I think the cdj850, cdj890,
and cdj550?), but those have been reported to work worse than the
cdj670.
Note that all of these drivers aren't included in the
standard Ghostscript package, so you'll have to get a new version
and/or roll your own...
Best of luck,
Brian

One that I use occaisionally is called Tomsrtbt. It's pretty good. It
gets installed on a 1.44MB boot disk, which when booted, expands the root
and user filesystems off the disk and into a RAM-disk. This means that
you don't need the disk after it's booted.
Unfortunately, it means that if you edit the root or user filesystems, it
doesn't alter what's on the disk. You can edit what's on the disk through
a utility though. Anyway, it's probably available from various download
sites.

Given that the original poster was posting from Czechoslovakia in English,
it seems odd to get replies in French.
It seems clear to me that replies in languages other then English ought to
be either:
1) Privately emailed

On RedHat 5.1 and 5.2 (Mandrake 5.3 not included) you have to change a library
which is buggy and doesn't support dead keys. Right now I am using Mandrake 5.3 and
didn't have to change the librairies.
Just go to my web site and you will find all you need plus the xkeycaps program to
generate your .Xmodmap graphically. I fixed the original program to support the
French Canadian keyboards which weren't supported.
Anyone know the scan code for the Super key on the CF keyboard? It is on the right of
the right shift key under the enter key.

Yup, like Linux, they rarely crash and are virtually immune to infections.

I read somewhere in the debian-devel mailing-list archives that the only
sensible way to do this is to set up a chroot environment that runs 2.0.7.
Perhaps someone else has another recommendation.

The Initio INI-9100AS only works in Windows and NT. It will not work
in dos or Linux or any other system.

Sendmail was first, but Exim, Smail, and Qmail are quality products
also. Visit the Bugtraq archive (e.g., www.geek-girl.com) and search
for each before committing to any. Sendmail is a large, complex binary
that runs as root and accepts commands from possibly hostile visitors.
It's had security problems. Maybe they are all fixed now.
I have been using Qmail. Its license terms prevent Red Hat and the
rest from bundling it, but there are RPM files, and the source install
is fully documented and works flawlessly.
Qmail vs. Sendmail is a tradeoff, security vs. flexibility and
convenience, and nobody knows your needs but you.
Qmail's main drawback may also be a feature: it wants to store
mail in a different place than is traditional, for added security
and performance, and that means you have to modify the user mail agents
and pop servers you use with it, and the mods and addons are not
as well documented and tested as Qmail itself.
(The Qmail+uucp connection is a piece 'o cake. I recommend it as an
alternative to futzing around with short-lived DNS or POP to move mail
between a smarthost and a dialup host with dynamic IP address.
Taylor UUCP is excellent.)
[Very good summary of Sendmail getting started stuff, deleted.]

Hi
I was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice for prettying up
my X-Term, what I want to do, is make it transparent with a slight green
tint and yellow text. If anyone could tell me about going about this, I
would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mark Powell
