Subject: FIPS question
Date: 18 Jun 2000 14:58:09 GMT
Sorry to be a bother, I'm having a problem trying to run FIPS to repartition my
hard drive. When I reboot with the DOS system disk I created as described in
the FIPS documentation, and type "fips" at the A:> prompt, I get a message
"Program too big to fit in memory". I've tried adjusting the memory available
to DOS (I have 80 MB RAM) but the message persists.
If anyone has had this problem and knows how to resolve it, I'd be very
thankful. I'd like to start getting familiar with Linux, but it's going to be
difficult if I can't get it installed. Oh, I'm attempting this repartitioning
and installation on a 166 MHz Pentium II MMX machine, if that is helpful and
I'm running Win98 at the moment.
Thanks in advance!

Dave Spaar

Subject: Booting Corel on DuOS
Date: Sun, 18 Jun 2000 10:54:40 -0400
I recently got a new DuOS box. Good little box, but the network card only
had an RJ-45 connection, and our network is BNC the whole way. So I pulled
the RJ-45 card and stuck in a vanilla Realtek 8019 ISA card. Booted to
Windows and all was working well. Booted to Linux when I discovered the
kernel had no idea what Realtek was. Followed the directions at
http://www.smc.com/eznet/drivers/1660/1660linux.txt and there were no probs
until
reboot. When you boot a duOS box, you get a menu with
Linux/Windows/Debug/Expert modes. Booting to Linux gives me an instant
dead-box now, with a pretty multi-colored display. I can however go to
Expert and boot from my old backup kernel (I'm not entirely stupid!)
However, even when I replaced the new buggy kernel with the functioning one,
the boot menu refuses to boot to it.
Where does the boot menu go to find the kernel it boots to? Yes, I ran
LILO, but it still seems to want to boot onto the buggy kernel.
Help!
And has anybody gotten an 8019 ISA card to work?
Thanks!
Ross

Mount the root partition on the hard disk to, say, /mnt. Then type:
chroot /mnt /usr/bin/whatever
and it runs (very useful for chroot /mnt /sbin/lilo :-)

It looks like a quiescent rxvt uses about 1.3 Mb, and a gnome-terminal
about 3.9 Mb.
Sounds like no difference to me if you only use a few terminals at
once.
I telnetted into my box running fvdm2/Afterstep, and got 6.9% CPU usage.
Then after running Gnome/Enlightenment and got 3.0% CPU usage.
These are quiescent measurements; lots of graphics might show a
different
tale. The simpler GUI felt a bit faster, but I like the prettiness of
Gnome.
Just my input.

Try:
telnet news.vmware.com 119
If it connects, then there's a problem with your news client, or
you're being denied access by vmware. Otherwise, there's a problem on
your side.

As root
edit /etc/lilo.conf and add
append="mem=128M"
somewhere near the top, then install the change, and reboot with
lilo
shutdown -r now

The warranty and liability expired as you read the message.
If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.

Michael,
I thought that anyone in Provo who said Damnit would be banished to
instant hellfire!
Anyway, my thought is that if it's worth an hour of your work to try and
get GNU/Linux installed, then it's worth obtaining a CD disk to install
from. Here in Albuquerque, we have many stores at which you can buy
ENTIRE multiCD distributions of Linux for under 25.00 bucks. Currently,
TurboLinux boxed set is 28.00 with a twenty dollar rebate. I use SuSE,
and it's currently 28.00 for the 6 cd boxed set and comes with what is
probably the best manual included in ANY distro on the market.
My personal feeling is that only a seasoned linux veteran has the
expertise to sucessfully use hard drive images, network installations,
etc. Most of us need the documentation, and the ability to do rapid,
repeat corrective installations while we work through the installation
and early implementation process. While it is correct, of course, that
it is possible to perform these non-standard, complicated installations
of linux, what they really do is scare most people off, lead to
disappointment and frustration, give linux a bad rap, etc.
Much better to order a nice fully documented distro, or even to purchase
a dollar fifty cheapbytes distro CD. People are having so many problems
downloading images and attemtping the burning of their own CDs. I can't
tell you how many posts I've responded to from people who have
nightmares with these "burnt CDs", when for the dollar fifty, they could
obtain proven CDs.
I think that people should view Linux as being "gratis" but not free!
It may not cost lots of money, but it's going to cost plenty of time, at
least initially, for the steep learning curve, and the reinstalls, the
frustration, etc.
So, the frustration in your post is manifest. Invest thirty bucks in
your career and future, go out to Fred Meyer or CompUSA or
OfficeMax,etc, and obtain a decent distro. After having used Red Hat and
Slackware for several years, I swear by SuSE.
Good Luck with your issue. Just remember, with the right distro, Linux
is much easier to install than win. And look around at your newsstand.
Last month I got a magazine with 2 distro cds, one for StormLinux and
the other for Mandrake 7.0 The mandrake installed with a few issues,
but very smoothly, and just the right order for newbies.

I had this same error. It's not a problem in your C libraries
it's a problem with you LANG environment variable not
being set. So open a terminal and type 'echo $LANG' and
it will say 'null'. The soultion is when you log in manually
choose the English language ( or whatever language you use ).
I am assuming that you use the login manager (gdm) that came
with Helix. If you don't use gdm then somewhere you want to
set the LANG variable to C.

It is a video mode id not an interrupt. It is explained in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation.svga.txt

1) yes scan in this case is the same as sync. The numbers you have
listed can be set into XFConfig with one of the configuration programs
or manually by you. These are quite a bit better than svga so you can
try that setting first. As long as you are within the (your) monitor
documented specs you're OK.
2)the i810 chipset is well supported by XFree86 and Intel, Try their
site for info but be ready for a lot of work.
