Subject: 2.2.1 module problems
Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 02:18:05 GMT
Hi,
I just got 2.2.1 and compiled it, but left ppp as a module.
For some reason, I'm getting this in my syslog:
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-4
modprobe: can't locate module net-pf-5
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24
These are littered throughout the file after I start pppd.
There's something in the menuconfig that says that
CCP compressors are only built as modules for ppp, so I suppose
I want to leave ppp as a module.
I also read somewhere that the net-pf-4 and -5 symbols
have to do with IPX and AppleTalk, and I didn't compile those
in so I have *no* idea why the kernel wants those.
There's also something funny in my syslog file that might
be causing all this. I get these lines at the very beginning
of the boot process: they're the 4th and 5th line in the syslog
file after a reboot:
kernel: Error seeking into /dev/mem
kernel: Error adding kernel module table entry.
I don't know what exactly is wrong with my memory, but my system
seems to run fine otherwise. In case this is a H/W problem,
I'm running a FIC 503+ MB with a AMDK6/2 at 350mhz, with 64mb
of SDRAM in one DIMM socket.
Something that *might* be related is the fact that I'm using
using the kernel's framebuffer driver (1024x768x16bpp) so I
can use X with my Diamond Monster Fusion (AGP).
Has anyone seen this before? I'd really appreciate any help.
I'm getting lousy throughput with my ppp connection and I'm
guessing that problem will go away if I solve this one.
Thanks in advance!

You know, there is an obscure bug in keyboard driver that breaks ISDN if
CapsLock and/or 1 keys are getting stuck. Start from fixing your keyboard.

Sounds like you don't have a requisite shared library installed.
I don't know which; maybe a certain version of gtk. Read the
GXedit documentation, esp. README or INSTALL. Or maybe
http://devplanet.fastethernet.net/gxedit.html .

My version of StarOffice doesn't support Office97 file formats. Perhaps
the new one does, I'm not sure. The point is, make sure you don't end up
with something that won't work for you.

Why should it. It is just plain window manager and not fancy and bloated
desktop like kde.
It cannot even paint desktop with solid color. It relies on separate
xsetroot program to do it.
The best thing of fvwm is that it doesn't try to be all-in-one solution.
It does one job and does it well, so you can teach it to call other
small and good utility to do another job.
xv is not optimal for this. But I don't understand why do you object to
XPM files. I cannot see no difference between jpeg and xpm. You can
easily convert one to another. xpm would be a bit bigger, but whats a
matter. You want image on background - most silly thing I want imagine,
so be prepared to spend either some cpu or some disk space to satisfy
your need.

Actually, writing conversion filter is MUCH more complicated than
unexperienced person may even imagine. Word format docs are more than
100 pages, and don't even cover equation, becouse from programmers point
of view word doesn't support equiations. It just knows how to call
separate program which draws them, and then hides its data somewhere in
its file. So, even if Microsoft would publish source code for word, it
would be very complicated task to write paper.
Better to ask people you cooperate with, use some more or open format like rtf
for interchange of information. It will also help them (not you, you are
safe even now) from macro viruses.
Really it is one of reasons, why experienced people prefer LaTeX - it
exist for any platform in the world. Another reason - it produces much
better quality. There is third, forth and fifth reason, which I don't
like to type in now.

Yes, tgz and tar.gz mean the same thing. That is, it's a tar file that
has been compressed using the gzip program (or the same compression
method, anyway).
The tar program doesn't automatically compress files. (Older versions
didn't even know about compression.) It just sort of combines a bunch
of files into one big lump for simplicity's sake. (Unix experts:
yes, I know tar does more than that, I'm simplifying here.)
To decompress a tgz archive, assuming you have a modern version of
tar, the syntax is actually pretty straightforward:
tar xvzf name-of-file
where "x" means "extract", "v" means "verbose", "z" means "uncompress",
and "f" means "extract from a file" (as opposed to extracting from a
tape device, tar's original purpose -- "tar" means "tape archive").

Greetings,
I compiled the 2.2.1 kernel and installed it as a secondary kernel, so that I
can still boot into 2.0.36. Thank God I did. I find that the 2.2.1 kernel is
way faster than the old one. My system is almost twice as fast opening
programs, and drawing windows (etc..) in X. Beautiful. I want to use 2.2.1 all
of the time, but I need access to my CDROM, CDRW (both ATAPI).
The weird thing is that I can't mount my CDROMS! I have no problems with the
old kernel. It looks like a permissions problem, but I haven't messed with that
and they work fine under the old kernel. I compiled in all IDE/ATAPI/SCSI
support. Can't figure out what is going on. Anybody else see anything like
this?
I reconfigured and recompiled it a few times, made it clean, etc... Same
problems. I read everything I could find on kernel compiling/installing.
Everything else works except man.
Oh, and if anyone knows what might cause this: For either kernel, all of a
sudden man doesn't work. If I man to the /path-to-manpage, it works. If I just
type in man "command", she doesn't work.
I haven't done anything with man. How can I fix man???
Thanks.

LXNY will have a general meeting Tuesday 2 February 1999.
This meeting is free and open to the public.
The meeting starts at 6:30 pm.
The meeting is at the IBM building at 57th Street and Madison Avenue on
the Island of Manhattan.
LXNY will meet regularly the first Tuesday of each month at IBM
throughout 1999. LXNY and its supporters thank IBM for the donation of
this meeting space. LXNY also thanks those who, inside and outside of
IBM, worked in favor of this gift.
The Schools and Libraries Project is today bringing free OSes and other
free software into New York City schools and libraries. A brief report on
the Project will be made. The Project stands in need of sysadmins,
teachers of *n*x, and volunteers who do not yet know *n*x.
The Hardware Initiative will be discussed.
Refund Day will be discussed. After the meeting there will be an informal

Upcoming Events:
Russ McManus will demonstrate a system he wrote which is in daily use at
Goldman Sachs. The program is written in GUILE, a library implementation

possible.
A large well planned install fest will be held in cooperation with NYLUG,

New York City as possible.
Note that sometimes the time, date, and place of an LXNY event will be

You can partition the disk using fdisk or cfdisk and then reference
individual partitions. I made one big partition and reference it
as sd*1 where * is the appropriate number. I've been told that you can
use the whole thing as just a drive by referencing it as only sd*, but
I have not actually tried it.
Under plan A:
fdisk /dev/sd*
mkfs.ext2 /dev/sd*1
mount -t ext2 /dev/sda*1 /mountpoint

Suppose I have a Linux Box, running Samba to a number of Windows NT/9X PCs,
is there any way to run X applications off the Linux Box, but viewed on my
Windows boxes.
At work, we use Exceed to login ot a server and run GUI applications on the remote
server.
Since I heard Exceed is expenseive, is there a cheaper (hopefully free) alternative.
