You can grab a precompiled .tgz of rpm from ftp.rpm.org

What I've done to get LFN support in Linux is create the image with Rock
Ridge extensions. It's a bit lengthier process when using the Adaptec
software, but it can be done.

The process I used was the process Adaptec had on their website as a
"use at your own risk, we've had people tell us this works but we've not
tried it" sort of thing.

Basically:

1. Use mkisofs to create an ISO9660 disk image. mkisofs supports Rock
Ridge extensions with the proper command line parameters/config file.
(man mkisofs for more info, I don't have it handy right now).

2. Mount the DOS partition of your system and copy the disk image to
that partition.

3. Reboot the machine under Win9x/NT

4. Start the Adaptec Easy CD Creator software. Under the "File" Menu,
there is an option to use an image file. This option (in 3.5) supports
2 file types, CIF and ISO - use the ISO format.

5. Burn the disc.

This is with a single machine; with two machines, it's that much easier
because there's no reboot necessary (duh!). Just get the image over to
the NT machine.

When trying to read 8mm or DAT tapes from non-Linux systems, the magic bullet
for me has been:

   mt setblk 0

It has to do with the physical block size on the tape. I don't know what it
does exactly, it just works.

I checked out the links but was unable to determine if the Lucent modems

Hi All,
I'm using RH5.2. I down loaded new kernal 2.2.5
and managed to install. after reboot, system halted.
It say " Loading Linux

        system halted"

Any one have seen this problem, I can boot my old kernal as normal.
Please let me know.

Hi

to see what ports are open on your linux machine try at a shell

netstat -t -n -a |grep LISTEN

you can also use tcpdump to debug things
man tcpdump

FYI you might find this interesting. I usually get irregular &
unpredictable mouse response under X on RH5.2 however if I can get an Xterm
running and run XF86Setup I can "Apply" microsoft mouse settings and this
will normally get the Mouse working OK. I may have to apply the mouse
settings three or four times but it works out in the end. Before I do this,
moving the mouse gives the pointer a warp attack where it flicks about on
the screen and it thinks that the left button is depressed all the time!

--> Try XF86Setup.

Some minor (depending on your actual needs) limitations in ext2 that I
have run across are the 2GB file size limit on 32bit architectures
which is well known and easy enough to design around and a performance
problem when you put many thousands of files in the same directory.
The latter is not likely to bother you unless you try to run a large
news server.

-> Is anything been/being done about the 127 meg swap size limitation (I would

You can put one swap partition on each disk. Or can you have multiple
swap partitions on the same disk now? Anyone?

-> couldn't do it, and a 2.0.36 system that could on separate partitions on the

This shouldn't be a problem. The 2.0.36 kernel and the 2.0.35 kernel
with SuSE 5.3 both find all my memory (I am only running 128MB). It
may be a distribution issue, but when I pulled down 2.2 series kernels
from kernel.org, there was no problem.

That pretty much covers what I know. I haven't played with NFS yet.
My drives on each machine are only 8.4GB and 6.4GB. They are each
formated with three partitions: /, /boot, and swap.

I am also sorry, but I do speak French, I am reading this from a French-speaking
group, so I do not understand why James should post *only* in English.

The message is cross-posted: it looks like both you and James do not notice it.

You are confusing the answer to which *you* are responding (which indeed
comes from Czech Republic, not Slovakia, and states *Michal* do not understand
French), with the original post, which was send by "Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Hoerni"
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> in article <news:7f1of0$g23$[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, which is AFAIK
a French-speaking writing from France (Wanadoo is much like AOL for the U.S.A.)

And no, I do not see why it is odd for a French-speaking person to write
French in a French-speaking group. Even if it lives from Czech Republic or
Slovakia.

The second is a correct option for an answer in French.
But the knowledge of French people might be worthwhile to the whole world,
I think: in order to achieve that, one may provide translations of everything,
or they may beg a pardon, explain they are unable to translate, and ask
for someone more capable to translate for the benefit of everybody (Martin
Ambush provides the translation in <news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
I will not repeat its job here; thanks anyway to him for doing so).

An answer in any language outside French or English is completely inapropriate
here, unless you know the poster and what for a language he speaks (and
you send private e-mails): even if Breton or Catalan are languages used in
France, I expect a post done in such languages in fr.* to begin a flame war
much like this one.

Also, please note that a number of people do not pay attention to the groups
when they are posting.

fr.* Netiquette urges people to set up the Follows-up field when cross-posting.
It is a pity it have not be done here.

The file INSTALL says that gcc will be install in the directory of

The subject pretty well sums it up. When I reinstalled RH 5.2, the audio

root, I accessed the CDROM drive and audio OK. I attempted to access it as a

The cdrom file in the /dev directory reads out lrwxrwxrwx so it would seem
that the user should be able to execute it. I may be confused with some of
the Linux lingo and perhaps what I'm looking at but I'm new at this and we all
gotta learn if we're gonna use this booger.

So, any help you could give me to resolve this problem would be appreciated.
