I've purchased ReHat 5.2 from Cheapbytes and the whole thing is on the CD.
I did find quite a few problems. The most annoying is the bug in the console windows.
If the file is too small there is no way you will be able to edit with a command
line editor like joe unless you're darn lucky.

I doesn't set the size correctly for many applications, I have the French version and
it clips messages, which makes it unintelligible. Messages in the EMAIL doesn't
support the accents correctly making it useless. In the newsgroup it works OK after
you read one or two messages but if the server is slow like my news server it is
impossible to read any message. Netscape works correctly so obviously KDE's news
program has a problem.

Using the useless snd program is a problem, size wise. KDE find a stupid place to put
it (near the end of the screen) and makes it larger than the screen (my res is
1024x768) It is ridiculous to assume that the average user has over 12k or more
resolution

I said snd is useless because it is impossible to record faster than 8035hz. I sets it
up for 44100hz and as it starts recording it reduces it 8035hz, for stupity it's hard
to beat. This is absolutely useless considering that my mp3 program only supports
44100hz. I have to go on winblows NT to record songs correctly.
As for studio, I fail to see the interest in recording with the sound off. Yes I set
it correctly.

Aside from this I still like KDE better than winblows.

I have gotten everything on my new RH Linux 5.2 system set up except my
printer and modem. I was wondering some of you experts could help me shed
some light on the problems.

Here are the steps I've taken so far with the printer:

Printer works fine if connected directly to the lp1 port. However, that is
unfortunately where I need to plug my Zip drive also. So I thought, no
problem, I'll just plug the printer into the other port on the Zip drive.
Linux no longer recognizes the printer in this configuration, no matter what
I try. Has anyone else solved this type scenario? Printer, btw, is an Epson
Stylus II Color which, as I said, works fine if connected directly to the
serial port.

With the modem (a Viking 56K DFV/V90, btw), I've run out of things to try. I
have two books on getting Linux up and running and I've followed directions
from both. I've also visited a web site and newsgroup posting I read about
here in this newsgroup and followed those directions. Here's where I'm at
and what is happening so far:

On boot, the kernel recognizes the serial bus (port) that the modem is
connected to (tty03/cua3 in my case). PPP is also configured and recognized
by the kernel. Setserial correctly reports the status of the port. Doing a
less/var/log/messages also reports everything should be working fine. I have
configured resolv.conf, ppp-on, and ppp-on-dialer for my particular
configuration/ISP/DNS trail, etc. I also used the X version of modem set up
and all seems fine there.

When I do an echo "ATDT/n" >/dev/modem, nothing happens, I'm simply returned
to the root prompt. Have I missed something?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

VNC is available at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/
But the does not mention about a Linux specific port. There is a port
available for Unix.
I 've not got into the material much.

VNC is a free program that can run X from Windows, Windows from X,
either from MAC or either from any Java capable web browser via
TCP/IP. I forget the URL, but a www.yahoo.com search for 'vnc' should
find it.

Yeah. I can't understand what audience many of these books think
they're aimed at. Do they really think they can start with a
Windows user and teach them Unix and System Administration and
Linux installation in such a way so that they end up productive
Linux users??? I don't think so ... not by reading a single book
while having no prior Unix (and probably no prior non-Windows
and no programming) experience. By trying to do so, I think these
books promise a lot more than they can really deliver, and just
end up discouraging and frustrating the typical reader who buys
the book thinking they're going to end up moderately competent
in all these areas. No way ... I've seen many of them just give
up, completely confused, and run back to Windows. And I can't
blame them.
I think the Linux community needs to be more realistic
about the class of users who can really get their arms around
Unix. Trying to encourage a Windows user, who may just want
to use Word for some documents, to switch to Linux is probably
ridiculous. Would you advise grandma to trade in her old Ford
for a Ferrari when she just needs to go shopping for groceries
once a week? I think a lot of this kind of advice arises
from a "Hate Miscrosoft" mentality. While I, personally, feel
pretty much the same, I don't think it's fair to take it out
on innocent users whose best interests may not be best served
by Linux.

Subject: Q: setserial
Date: Mon, 01 Feb 1999 11:17:23 +0100

I've bought me a additional serial board to get ttyS2 and 3
on my SuSE5.3. When I boot the system it says something like
( regarding my additional board) :

/dev/cua2 on addr 0x3e8 is a 16550A irq 4
/dev/cua3 on addr 0x2e8 is a 16550A irq 3

and that looks ok I guess?

So what I do is:
/sbin/setserial -b /dev/cua2 uart 16550A port 0x3E8 irq 5
/sbin/setserial -b /dev/cua3 uart 16550A port 0x2E8 irq 9

after that a 'setserial -a /dev/cua3' says that this device
now use irq2, which is ok as it's a synonym of irq9, has the
correct address and everything else. All looks very ok,
but the port just does'nt work!! I need it for my PilotManager.

Booting NT on the box verifies that the HW is ok so that's not the
problem. I can use the port ok on NT and the (NT)PilotManager there.

Any hints or anything is vastly appreciated.

TIA

Preceding post (reproduced below) continued here...
So sorry...I forgot to make my point vis-a-vis Ron's original
remark.
I think at least some of these authors write their books
this way simply to sell as many as possible. They know the
largest audience is Windows, so they promise they can turn
Windows users into Linux users. Do such inevitably unfulfilled
promises really help out the Linux community? Or do they just
help out the authors' and publishers' wallets?
Let me hasten to add that not all authors and publishers
have such one-track motivations. I know who I think are the
good and bad ones, but I'm reluctant to be specific, for all
the obvious reasons. (However, one good example is printed
versions of the LDP and HOWTO's.)
Anyway, Ron, that's why I think you can't find the kind
of book you're looking for. I'd stick with the Red one you
mentioned in your original post. We know their hearts are in
the right place.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (James Dingwall)
Subject: Installing from scratch...
Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 10:45:43 GMT

Hi,

I'm wanting to attempt something rather silly; I want to install Linux
without using a distribution - ie compile and setup eveything myself. My
reasons for doing this are partly that I want to move to glibc2 and also
go to egcs from gcc among other things, I also want to gain experience in
this area. I have one Linux box based on Slackware 2.3 but significantly
altered, and another which just has ~2Gb partitioned for ext2. All the
pointers that I can find are for installing redhat/suse/slackware etc.

My best thoughts on this topic at them moment are that I need to compile
glibc2, compile a cross-compiler for glibc2, compile a compiler for glibc2
with the cross compiler, install the basics as static bins eg fileutils, a
shell init and go from there. Is this about right?

TIA,
James

Subject: Perl locale Question
Date: 1 Feb 1999 12:04:25 GMT

I get warnings about the locale not being properly set, even when running
the simplest scripts. I have read the man pages, but can't find anything
that works. Any ideas? Thanks.
