Your question is not really so stupid after all...
I started this past Christmas with a working Slackware innstallation
[which is designed for those who *want* to delve deeply into details]
and as of today, I continue to collect information on how to get things
back to where they were when the person who did the install left.
Your plight is well recognized in the Linux community and steps are
being taken *fast* to reduce the complexity. In answer to your direct
question:
LINUX INSTALLATION CONFIGURATION & U 2ND EDITION
by Kofler, Michael
Section: Computers-Unix Linux
In Stock: 3 at 44.95 (NEW, BOOK W/CD-ROM, Beaverton)
Linked at the top of my page, has the full cd-rom installation on a cd-
rom in the back. I strongly suggest that you buy a book - from
whomever/wherever - that has the Linux on a cd-rom in the back. This
is common and can be even found in the local mall with little effort.

This is not true: abs (found on freshmeat), can read excel files, but is

Yes this is an option. I already decided to write my master thesis with Lyx,
but the problem is that I do most of my work at the university, and they have
not yet noticed that Windbloze totally uncapable of doing complex things. (Try
to make a document (word) of about 25 pages, containing 8 graphs, 8 tables and
25 forumulas, just a normal document for a physicist. It completely slows
down your system and is always busy with other things than accepting your
input) Back to the topic: I really need to be able to import excel files, or
at least files that can be written by excel and keep the formulas.

Hello everyone,
I'm trying to move some files between two RedHat linux boxes (both
Intel, from 6.0 to 6.1). I want to use rcp to maintain the ownership
and modes of the files and I also want to copy a large directory
hierarchy (i.e. I need the -p and -r switches).
I've tried using a variety of rcp command lines but none let me in.
Reading the docs on both rcp and rsh don't help and wasn't able to
find anything of much use.
I have full access to both systems.
If anyone can give me example commands, pointers to online resources
(other than man pages) or general advice, I'd be very grateful!
Cheers and TIA,
Andy.

Missed the start of this, are you trying to print from netscape ? lpr
works only if you have a default printer, lp , set up. Otherwise use the
command 'lpr -Pprinter_name', replace printer_name with name of the
printer you are tryin to use.

If you hook up a postscript printer to the local port it takes about 5
mouse clicks using the printtool command in RH to have the printer

Subject: MTA config for multiple ISP-accounts?
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 10:24:00 GMT
Hello,
I want to configure a MTA (in my case EXIM but all other are welcome,
too) for sending E-Mails to more than one different accounts at more
than one different ISP. For setting up only one user at one ISP seems
to be no problem because there could be several ways to succeed
(forwarding, aliasing, rewriting, etc.). But in this environment:
{ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
User X ===> { [EMAIL PROTECTED]
{ [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Getting mail from these account is of course no problem using
fetchmail and deliver all the mail to User X. But no, User X wants to
write an e-mail to somebody using his account on ISP1, then another
e-mail using account ISP2 and a last e-mail using account on ISP3.
How could this be configured?`
The problem seems to me, that using a MUA like elm or mutt, the
from-entry will always be X@localnet (or somelike). And than the MTA
cannot decide what ISP should be used. Maybe it's necessary to say
that "in" the e-mail, filter the e-mail (PERL-Skript) and set a new
from header depending on this line. Maybe something like this:
From: <X@localnet>
To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Testing
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello, this is ....
And after filtering:
From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Testing
Hello, this is ....
And the e-mail would be sent to mail.ISP2.com for correct
transmission.
But would that procedure be feasible? I don't find anything like this
in deja oder on the MTA-pages. How would this be done by the
professionals?
Ciao, Georg

PCI cards with IRQ 0 indicate that you do have a broken BIOS
implementation. It thinks that if you set PNP-OS to Y in your
CMOS you'd want no IRQ at all. Very common these days, very broken.
Go into your CMOS and set the PNP-OS to No/Disabled.

Does anyone know if rw access to ext2 partitions from Win95/98 will
ever be implemented in a 'normal' manner? By 'normal' I mean that it
should be interactive (no command line tools) and not require you to
install the whole JDK (like explore2fs).
I need to know this because there's around 1 GB lying free on my Linux
partitions, which could otherwise be wasted on running CM 2000 in full
setup ;-)

Subject: Problems with Adaptec 1542b SCSI & Sony SDT-5000 DDS2 DAT
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 12:12:44 -0000
I have recently aquired an old Adaptec AHA1542b ISA SCSI card and a Sony
SDT-5000 DDS2 DAT drive and am having problems. The SCSI card is the only
SCSI card in my system (a P166 with 64Mb RAM running SuSE 6.3) and the
DAT drive the only SCSI device.
When I try to write to a tape say using a command such as
find /home -print | cpio -ocva > /dev/st0
It writes about 20 Mb then stops with a change media message. Unusual for
a drive with a minium of 4GB capacity. It also seems to be writing very
slowly. After the failure occurs I can no longer do anything with
/dev/st0 without removing the aha1542 module and reloading it as I get
"device not configured" errors.
When it fails the console log contains one of the following messages:
Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
st0: Error with sense data: [valid=0] Info fld=0x0, Current st09:00:
sense key Not Ready
or
Sent BUS RESET to scsi host 0
Additional sense indicates Power on, reset, or bus device reset occurred
Additional sense indicates Logical unit is in process of becoming ready
I am running the SCSI adapter as a module. It seems to load OK if i
insmod aha1542. It also recognises the DAT drive. When the SCSI module is
loaded it generates the following messages:
Configuring Adaptec (SCSI-ID 7) at IO:330, IRQ 11, DMA priority 5
scsi : 1 host.
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi tape st0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 6, lun 0
Which all looks OK to me.
running mt -f /dev/st0 status generates
drive type = Generic SCSI-2 tape
drive status = 318767616
sense key error = 0
residue count = 0
file number = -1
block number = -1
Tape block size 512 bytes. Density code 0x13 (DDS (61000 bpi)).
Soft error count since last status=0
General status bits on (1010000):
ONLINE IM_REP_EN
The 1542b SCSI card jumpers are set to:
Sync negotiation: disabled (factory default)
SCSI Parity Bit: enabled
SCSI address: 7
DMA Channel: 5
Interrupt Channel: 11
DMA Transfer Speed: 8.0
BIOS: disabled
I/O Port Address: 0x330
BIOS Wait State: 0
BIOS Address: DC00
Floppy Support: disabled
DMA Request Channel: 5
DMA Acknowledge Channel: 5
IRQ Channel: 11
The DAT Drive is jumpered as follows:
SCSI ID: 6
Data compression: enabled
SCSI Parity: On
Terminator on: On
Terminator Power: On (I have also tried with this set to off as well)
Oh, I forgot to mention, the drive is connected internally inside my PC.
Any help would be much appreciated. I'm beginning to think the drive
doesn't like the old Adaptec card. I'd prefer not to have to go and buy a
new card if at all possible as I only really want to run this single tape
drive.
Cheers,
Sean.
