I haven't got my Linux box on the 'net yet, but I still try
and use Netscape to open various HTML files on my system. It
works for the most part, but whenever I have a file that I d/l'd
from a remote site (so the graphix aren't present), I get a dialog
that says Netscape can't access certain hosts (the same ones each time,
like home.netscape.com) and doesn't load the page at all. The
Windows version doesn't do this regardless of the absence/presence
of a connection. I haven't changed the default settings of
Netscape, so what gives ? TIA....Jet

I have a Pentium 233 with 64 megs of RAM... vmware runs fine
for me once it's up (although it seems to take an eternity to "boot"
the virtual machine). However, I've been discouraged at how badly it
decreases the performance of everything else that it running while
I've got it up.

I think that I'm going to stick to dual-booting under I have
the cash together to shell out for a more up-to-date system.

After using Slackware for a few years I moved to Debian 2.0 "hamm" and haven't
regretted it a bit. Debian gives you the freedom to get your hands dirty
just like in Slacky, but it's kept more up to date vis-a-vis libc, gcc/egcs
etc. (Note: this isn't a dig against Slackware, just my personal preference
as to what choices each distribution makes).

And of course Debian has the package management system if you want it too.
The install _can_ be a royal pain if you try to use the initial instance of
dselect to do more than minimal configuration, but if you follow a couple
simple tips it goes quite smoothly. (This may have improved in 2.1 "slink").

I've installed and set up RH for my sister (who's a complete newbie to Un*x)
and it was a breeze, with fairly good on-line tutorials etc. But if you're
looking for a more traditional feel I'd say Slacky or Debian. They seem to
have handled the libc5->libc6 and gcc->gcc+egcs transitions more smoothly.
(Note the "seem" in that statement, I'm not claiming it to be authoritative).
They just each did (or do) it in their own way.

OK - to start with, playing audio CDs involves nothing more than the
soundcard's mixer. The output from the CD drive is analogue.

What system do you have? Playing mp3s involves quite a high spec
machine. I have a 486DX4/120 and I can *just* play mp3s with the latest
kmp3 so long as I don't do anything else. If I do anything else, the
playback stops temporarily.

Can you play other sound file formats OK?

Mark.

You are presumably aware that dev/lp has changed from lp1 to lp0 (or

I can think of some things that may be wrong:

- try to run lilo manually
- does your new kernel have IP support?
- does the kernel have network loopback support?
 (device 'lo')
- are network devices initialised?
 (check with 'ifconfig')
-is your routing table set up?
 (check with 'route' command,
you should have a line reading
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 <number> lo )

The most likely problem is no loopback support in the kernel.
Does the system log contain any useful diagnostics?
(/var/log/messages)

Hope this helps

But I have a PC, so I bought Bleem! (Virtual Playstation) for the

better performance for less money than a real Playstation.

When does StarCraft, Ceasar III, or Tomb Raider come to the Playstation?

The problem goes away if I su and do it as root. I am assuming that

might that be. My lpr file has the following permissions but chmod 555
does not help.

-r-sr-sr-x 1 root lp 20704 Mar 4 1998 /usr/bin/lpr

If the advice at the bottom doesn't fix the audio problem, you need to
run "chmod 666 /dev/hdc" (or whatever /dev/cdrom points to ("ls -l
/dev/cdrom" will tell you)), which gives everyone read and write access
to the device.

KDE is about the best desktop environment I have ever seen
under any platform. There are a few reasons why it isn't even more
popular than it already is... I've met a few people that find Gnome
more appealing (I don't understand why, it seems less attractive and
more buggy to me... but different things work for different folks).
However, the main problem that the anti-KDE crowd seems to have is
"religious" differences with the licencing scheme used by the QT
libraries that KDE is built with (they've recently changed this... but
I don't know all the details, and don't particularly care).

QT is designed to allow for ease of development on both Linux
and Win32 platforms... although I really haven't seen it used much
outside of KDE so far.

Subject: kernel, modules, rc.sysinit and mkinitrd
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 14:57:33 -0400

I recently compiled the 2.2.5 kernel and supporting modules. Previously
I ran the stock RH-5.2 2.0.36 kernel and at boot up it loaded the
3c59x.o module and established networking. When I boot the 2.2.5
kernel, it does not load any modules. I can get networking up by
performing "insmod 3x59x" and then "ifup eth0". Ideally, it would just
load during boot up without me adding those two commands to rc.local.

I thought the answer might be to use mkinitrd and have the
initrd-2.x.x-x.img load the 3c59x module. That should load the module
but it doesn't appear when I run lsmod. Perhaps I used mkinitrd
incorrectly? I read through the rc.sysinit file and see that RedHat has
introduced some oddities such as a /lib/modules/2.x.x-x/.rhkmvtag file
containing version info. I can't find exactly where any modules are
loaded or eth0 is initialized. This post-kernel-install
module-manipulation is not addressed in significant detail in either the
kernel-howto or the source readme. I would imagine this is probably
distribution dependent?

Here I guess I have two options. I use do my own kluge or conform to
the RedHat method. I would prefer to figure out how RedHat's init
scripts are really working and follow that example. Can anyone pinpoint
where and in which scripts I should look? Further, what instructions
are in the Red Hat /boot/initrd-2.0.36-0.7.img?

The reason why Linux is not detecting all the RAM is a "bug" in 2.0.35 and 2.0.36.
Simply
adding mem=..... will do the trick, but I think the point is ****ALWAYS KEEP YOUR
KERNEL

Switch to 2.2.5 and you wouldn't even have to deal with this problem. My machine is

What are the permissions on /tmp? (Do 'ls -ld /tmp/.', which DTRT
even if /tmp is a symlink.) It should be 0777 with the sticky bit set
("drwxrwxrwt").

And to that person I would say: http://slashdot.org/

Yes, I'm using LILO, and have run both 'plain' dos and xdos.

If you are really having problems, and haven't already done so, you
should use the pre-packaged binary (e.g. *.rpm or *.deb or whatever)
rather than compiling your own. At least, until you figure out
the configuration that you need.

Again, I strongly recommend using the dos debug arguments (RTFManPage);
if you are getting nothing from it, then use strace. There's no
way to mind-read your computer; try-this, try-that, try-the-other is
too time consuming -- if you can't figure it out immediately from the
documentation, then you real data (from debugs) are essential!

You might also want to check your /etc/mtools.conf: can you see inside
your hdimage with mdir? (for more on this...read the docs!!!)

The newsgroup can offer help, but is no substitute for thought, study,
and (as necessary) experimentation.
