Have you read /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes lately?
The kernel docs clearly state that you should upgrade some
software before upgrading to the 2.2.x series.
You should probabely just install new modutils.

This ought to be covered in a faq. It is definitely covered in the lilo
documentation. Lilo is not psychic. It need to know what devices to
boot! Therefore, it needs to read from the linux drive that stuff is
stored on!

Does anybody have an old set of Linux 1.2.13 CD's laying about? I need them
for compatibility with a circa 1995 project that is dependent on certain
artifacts of that release (or closely related version)..

look at your fstab file (more /etc/fstab), there should be a line like
# <device> <mountpoint> <filesystemtype> <options> <dump> <fsckorder>
none /proc proc defaults
in there. If not, edit fstab as root and add this line. Then you could try
mounting it with the command mount /proc but I have never tried this. Note
that there is no actual device mounted at /proc, so if you have hdbx there
change it. To check if it's actually mounted to mount w/o arguments or
look at /etc/mtab.

No, the possibility occurred to me but I tried the latest version of
fetchmail first (5.0.x) which - as I found - acknowledges and fixes the
problem. The '>' were added to 'From ' lines by procmail, after all, as per
the bit of procmailrc I quoted. Works okay now; thank you!

The only way to do this would be to use the SOCKS proxy in MS Proxy server.
Your linux apps would have to support the socks proxy though

Has anyone else noticed this problem? I can only get
newsgroup postings to go through (no matter which server they're going
through) when they are only a few lines long. Anything longer than
that, and Netscape just hangs (doesn't lock up, but sits there until I
cancel the send). I'd explain in more detail... but I'm about to hit

I have installed SuSE Linux on a computer that is going to be used as a
web server.
It seems to me that the Linux filesystem is very vulnerable to
powerdowns - much more than Win95/NT installed on a FAT16 disk.
I tried to turn off the computer without umounting the disks, and
repaired the disks with fsck. The result was that several files and
directories were deleted.
My questions are:
- Is there any alternative filesystem for Linux that handles powerdown
better ?
- What can be done to minimize these problems ? (An UPS would of course
be nice, but what else can be done ?).

try typing "rpm -q gtk+" (subsitute libgdk, libglib, etc. for gtk+ to
check for the version numbers of the other packages).

The defaults supplied by the make config prompts should be the values last
selected. Also you can view /usr/src/linux/.config this contains the current
selected options, .config.old contains the previous option. Of course this
doesn't mean this what the kernel was compiled with since you can run make config
but never run make zImage. look at the boot messages can give some clues as to
what has been selected.

I can't remember details now, but when I used RedHat dists in the
past, I learned to be very careful about letting them install LILO on the
hard drive. They may have improved it in recent distributions. I try
other distributions from time to time, but I find myself going back to
slackware myself, (though I once got a slackware distribution with some
weird alternative password encryption software on it).
Debian always looks enticing but then you get into these damned
dependencies or even though you specify an s3virge driver in dselect,
XF86Setup says it doesn't exist or something makes me throw up my hands.
X setup is where redhat really shines, and I've been known to save off
XFConfig files set up by a redhat install for when I installed slackware
over it on the partition.

Assuming these are DOS-format floppies, you might find it easier to use
"mtools" instead of mounting the floppy. Use "mdir a:" to list,
"mcopy a:file tofile" to copy.
See man pages and /etc/mtools.conf to configure it.

I am running/attempting to run a samba (v. 2.01) server to win95 machines.
I've a really simple setup -- I am simply sharing a few directories.
For some reason, the win machines can't find me on the network. I know
that there are no errors in the smb.conf file, as my setup used to work.
I am currently running kernel 2.2.3. (Samba didn't seem to work at all under
2.2.5). Any suggestions to get it working would be appreciated.
Thanks ahead of time,
