Subject: spurious ETXTBSY - known bug?
Date: 15 Mar 2000 22:03:19 GMT

A really strange thing just happened, and it almost has to be a kernel
or amd bug. I am interested to see if it is a known bug, and if it
has been fixed in later releases of the kernel or amd.

What happened:

I created a small shell script in my home directory (I don't normally
put scripts in my homedir, but this one's an exception). I tried to
run it. I get the error "Text file busy" when I try to run the
script. Wait, that's weird, I just created it. Knowing nothing
should be using it, I cp it to a new name, rm the old name, and mv it
back to its original name. I still get "Text file busy". strace
shows the expected; my shell is getting ETXTBSY from the kernel.

This is just bizarre.

So I fuser the script. fuser says I have two pids that are holding
the file open. No suffices are given by fuser, just the pids.

I look up the pids reported. They are both netscape processes. There
is no way these netscape processes had any legitimate business opening
this file I'd just created. I can't imagine that two netscapes (out
of about 5) would just randomly open a file I'd just created without
being told to.

In disbelief, I killed the two netscape processes. And the script ran
fine after that.

The machine is running Redhat 5.2, with the stock redhat kernel.
uname -r reports 2.0.36. The shell was bash; $BASH_VERSION reports
2.02.1(1)-release.

My home directory is NFS mounted from a Solaris 7 system. The
filesystem is automounted via amd.

/usr/sbin/amd -v reports:

am-utils version 6.0.1s11 (build 1).
Built by [EMAIL PROTECTED] on date Sun Aug 29 20:41:36 EDT 1999.

Is this a known problem? Has it been fixed in later releases? If it
is not a known problem, is reporting it on linux-kernel the best
course of action? Would I need to subscribe (drink from the firehose)
to send a message to said list?

Yes, just mount it using loop-back device,

I'd start with the "Site Administration Guide", "Network Administration

you. The above link is for the "Linux Documentation Project" (LDP).

ncftp some.archive.site
help get
get -R directory/

If you want to automate this, you can use an ftp mirror program. There are
several out there, mirror, fmirror, etc.
If you do use a mirror program be carefull that you deticate the local
target directory to that particular remote directory.

I've made the mistake in the past of designating an wrong local directory
and had the mirror program (working as intended) delete everything locally
in that directory tree that wasn't also on the remote site. No major harm
done, but something to keep in mind. :)

fmirror can be gotten from ftp://ftp.guardian.no/pub/free/ftp/fmirror/ which
is what I use sometimes and is suitable for running out of cron with the
apropriate switchtes.

If you've got a fast processor the programs run fast, if you've
got a slow computer the program will run slow. I've got one
program that started running back in November and hasn't finished
yet.

To findout how much of your CPU is being used do an uptime at the
command prompt, and to find out what the output means read the man
page for uptime.

Ust top to see what programs are using the most of the processor etc.

Just a long shot, but are you seeing your DNS servers, make sure you have
the correct ip addresses in /etc/resolv.conf also see if you can ping these
servers by name in an xterm ie ping www.ndirect.co.uk.

Hope this helps.

You can probably download a patch for the BIOS from Dell's website. I had to
do this recently for the very same reason, but you might want to get advice
first from Dell technical support. The number of patches seems to be huge, and
finding the right one can be difficult without a pointer in the right
direction.

Hi,

I was trying to revive an old Win 3.11 Packard Bell by reformatting the
hard drive and installing linux with some added memory. From 8 to 24
meg. When installing the Linux 5.2 I had gotten all the files copied, and
then I received a signal 11 error.

I tried the reinstallation with the increased memory now at 24 meg from 8
meg, and now it will not find my hard drive at all. I switched cables
etc, but no luck. What can I try next?

Had the same problem twice.

1: Installed Mandrake 7 with the security setting set on
high. Would not let me login as root.
Re-installed using medium and was able to login.

2: Later I added export XAUTHORITY=~bittwister/.Xauthority
to /root/.bash_profile so when I su'ed to root
I could run gui programs like linuxconf, netcfg,...
from my user account. Could not login as root at gui console.
        Had to back it out.

Rh 6.1 does support Mylex raid as I'm running a Accelleraid configured
for raid 5 and it installed just fine. I'm not a DAC960 expert, but
I believe that the bios on the card must be at or above a revision
level. I don't know what that is, but there's been threads about this
in the recent past so I would suggest www.deja.com and search. You

However, what the OP wants can be done. I know because I used to do
it when using the laptop to connect to the internet -- I downloaded
all of the new messages in the newsgroups I was subscribed to, and
read them later during travel time, lunch time, etc.

Unfortunately, not having used Netscape for newsreading for quite a

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Diego Berge)
Subject: Sound -- can't configure OTI-605 under RH6.0
Date: Wed, 15 Mar 2000 01:07:30 GMT

Hi,

I've been trying to configure the soundcard in the P75 machine I
have installed RH6.0 on. The soundcard in question is a Mozart /
OTI-605, and I can't seem to get it to work once and for all.

Occassionally, I've been successful at getting linux to play CD's,
and even sound files (I tried with WAV files and, yesterday, with
MP3).

   The situation is as follows:

As root, using the sndconfig utility, I first try to select the
"Mozart..." option as a soundcard. It asks me for port, IRQ, etc., of
which I'm not sure (it's supposed to be at port 0x220, but I don't
have that option when I choose "Mozart", so I tried different choices,
all with the same result). It says it's going to play a test sound
file, and then nothing is heard and it reports a problem with
modprobe. It says something like:
/lib/modules/.../*.so: can't find it
init_module /dev/audio: device or resource busy

Those are _not_ the actual error messages -- note that in the first
line I haven't given a true path and file name. Sorry about that, I'm
not in front of the linux machine right now, but I though the problem
might sound familiar enough to others. Also, I'm not sure if it
complains about not being able to find the library file (sb.so for
soundblaster, some other name for other cards, they do exist), or
about "resource busy" as in the 2nd line.

Note: According to fuser, none is using /dev/audio, /dev/dsp, or
the *.so modules either immediately before or immediately after I run
sndconfig. In general, assume I do the above first thing after
booting. X server not running -- runlevel 3.

Then, if I try with other soundcard models, I _sometimes_ succeed
with the "Sound Blaster" or the "Windows Sound System" options. It's
either one or the other that will work, or neither -- I haven't been
able to get reproducible behavior so far. When it doesn't work, the
error message is that about modprobe failure, and about
device/resource busy.

But the real problem is that when it does work, as yesterday, and a
few other times before that, it doesn't stick between reboots. When I
tried to use the sound system after a reboot, it no longer worked, and
sndconfig didn't help.

For the moment, I'm re-reading the Sound-HOWTO and whatever man
pages seem even remotely related to this problem, but I have the
feeling I'm not the first one in this situation, so I tough I would
ask here for pointers.

   Any help is greatly appreciated.

Regards,
Diego Berge.

How often should I retension? So the tar doesn't put any eofs on the
tape huh?

What if I want to do 3 tars in succession without rewinding?... (using
TAPE=/dev/nht0)

tar cvf ....
mt eof
tar cvf ...
mt eof
tar cvf ...
mt rewind

does writing an eof with mt flush the buffers too?
When I write an eof, is the tape head now sitting just after the eof ?
Is there a way to make tar flush and then write the eof?

Have you ever played with outher tools e.g. ufsdump etc.?

Thanks
Keith

I work in the corporate world where Linux is only a far off rumour, at
least as far as the vast majority of users are concerned. To help me
illustrate the power of Linux to my colleagues, if I were so
inclined, I though I could give the following example.

Let's assume I want to set up a small office computer system. Let's
say there will be two consultants in the office and one secretary. It
seems to me that I have two alternatives:

1. I could go out and buy three standard desktops loaded with the
usual suspects when it comes to software (Win NT with MS Office).
Total cost: about CDN$9,000. I'd have to network them, and because
I'm not that technologically sophisticated, I would hire a
consultant to do it for me. I don't know how much that would cost,
but let's say it would be another CDN$1,000.

2. As an alternative, I could go out and buy one kick-ass machine, a
Linux distribution that includes Netscape and StarOffice 5.1 and
two legacy machines (say 486 66's with 24MB RAM each etc). My
guess is that that would cost me about CDN$4,000. I would hire a
Linux consultant to network the machines (also for CDN$1,000?) so
that the legacy boxes would be X terminals used by the consultants.
Not only is this solution much cheaper, but I get easier software
   administration, no-headache intra-office email, no-headache net
access, no-headache file sharing, no-headache printer sharing etc.
The question is, is it realistic to expect the kick-ass box to be
able to run three X sessions where each session is running SO 5.1
and Navigator (these programs are mighty big pigs after all)?

Thoughts anyone?
