Subject: Why do I get auto-logged-out of my telnet session?
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 20:58:38 GMT
I'm running RedHat 6.2 on a PIII-700. Whenever I telnet OR ssh into
that box, then leave the sessions idle for some amount of time (maybe
1.5 - 2 hours), I get auto-logged-out.
Actually, maybe that's not quite it. When I return to the ssh/telnet
window, it doesn't say that I've lost my connection... at least not
yet. But as soon as I begin to type something, it immediately gives me
a "Connection lost" message.
I thought maybe it was a feature of my telnet/ssh client (Tera Term
Pro), but I get the same result with other clients. So it seems to be
server-side.
Next I thought maybe there was some shell setting that was doing it.
But my login shell is tcsh - a version I compiled WITHOUT the auto-
logout feature. (i.e. "echo $version" does NOT show the two
character "al" option, which would indicate auto-logout support). To
be safe, I even "set autologout = 600" (i.e. 10 hours) - but that made
no difference. So I don't think it's tcsh-related.
What else could it be? And how can I disable it, or at least stretch
the inactivity time to something much more suitable to me?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

Subject: Help with Mandrake dual boot install
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 21:09:26 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Howdy!
I have (had) installed Mandrake 7.0 on an old P100 with 80mg of ram
that I had. I was using this just as a toy install to see about
learning more about Unix and OS's in general. I have had a couple of
problems, though:
A) When I first installed it, occasionally the windows manager would
just plain freeze on me. I have been told that Linux is very stable,
but I didn't know how to get out of the frozen windows manager. I
ended up rebooting, which means I ended up reinstalling linux to get
back up and running.
Q: When the windows manager freezes, how can I get out?
Q: If I do truly crash, what can I do to make sure that Linux can
boot again? When I rebooted it seemed to trash the system. Even the
rescue disk didn't help. (It booted most of the way and gave me a
Kernel Panic error)
B) After reinstalling and using Linux for a spell (and enjoying it) I
was a bit disappointed with the slow speed. (Win95 on the other
partition seemed to handle the entire windowing environment better
than KDE did. Less jerky mouse action, etc.). So I had an Evergreen
200MHz chip that my brother gave me that I was told was totally
compatible with my system. I put it in and Windows boots normally.
Linux, however, again does not boot. I have reformatted its partition
and tried reinstalling, but every time it hangs on the reinstall. This
is getting a bit frustrating. I could (and probably will end up) going
back to the P100, but would like to avoid it if I could.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey, Yggdrasil was the first distro I installed. Then I
switched to Slackware, then to RedHat 2.1.

Even when going from one RH version to the next, it's sometimes
easier to just install from scratch. I've had particular
problems with RH running out of disk space while upgrading.

I can never remember the traditional bourne syntax either. At
least with bash you can do
make bzImage &> compile.log
I often do it like this
make bzImage &> compile.log &
tail -f compile.log

This may not help, but the 3c59x driver works with some similar
cards. Have you checked for your card in the Ethernet Howto?

I have been trying out cooledit for script editing etc. and so far it seems
great except for one small problem:
Everything works fine if I use cooledit from the Linux box itself, but if I
use it via VNCViewer running on a W98 machine, I can do everything except
type a '#' character. Cooledit will accept all other characters except this
one.
I can type a '#' in a terminal window in VNCViewer Ok so VNC is not blocking
the keystroke, but only cooledit seems to be affected.
Can anyone shed any light on this strange problem.
Thanks in advance

Try this one:
http://www.uow.edu.au/~andrewm/linux/#3c59x-bc
Look under "Patches to the 2.3/2.4 kernel's 3c59x.c driver" and download
the entire driver. Then put it in the 2.4.0 kernel tree (eventually back
up the kernel's 3.c59x.c first) and compile. It worked for me with a
slightly older version (only a few days older).
You can also find a pointer to this driver at http://www.scyld.com.

You don't say which window manager you are using.
> Q: When the windows manager freezes, how can I get out?
Try pressing Control-Alt-F1 (all three keys at the same time).
Usually this will give you a text-mode login screen.
You can then either try to kill the application that locked
or if all else fails do a clean shutdown of the machine.
Pressing Control-Alt-F7 should get you back to the GUI screen.

Subject: How do I change cd-rom from d: to e:
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 22:37:33 GMT
I've got Win95 and have just installed a very minimal version of Red
Hat 7 to try it out. I'm running a dual-boot. Win95 runs off my C:,
while Linux runs off a second hard drive (not just a second partition)
D:. The problem? When I go into Windows, it is not seeing the D-drive
and is calling the CD-Rom "D".
I wouldn't think that calling the CDRom D when in Win95 should cause
any problem, since Win95 is completely separate, but it does. When I
put CDs in the drive, it will read the folders but none of the files in
the folders, then it crashes Win95. I've run the boot disk with the CD
drivers on it, and each time it reassigns the CD-Rom as D. It seems
that since it is a Linux partition, Win95 thinks that there isn't a
drive there at all and so uses D.
Nothing seems to be working.
Any help?

Normally the Adaptec Scsi-card AHA1505 is installed
at boot-time by giving bootparameters trough LILO.
I'm using a bootfloppy with the kernel on it to boot
my multihomed system directly and I would like to keep
it that way.
Is there a way to use that card without using LILO and
bootparameters ?

Guess you don't read PC mag... A couple of months ago they did a review of
SMTP/POP servers, mostly for NT, they had a sidebar entitled So you want to
do it cheap? or something like that, they reviewed CDC's Intrastore Server.
It's a commercial product, but they give it away if you're on Linux/Intel.
Has SMTP/POP/IMAP/LDAP.

A windows question.....
Check your windows manual/doc/help and/or control panel/"my computer";
somewhere there is a menu/dialoge to allow assignment of the "drive letter"
for the cdrom.
