I was editing some configuration files on my server with vi and got
"error writing to swap" which I thought odd. I am the only user, and
wasn't running any programs other than normal services. The server has
128 MB RAM. I was able to save the configuration changes. I exited to
console (from X) and noticed root had mail.

I read the mail message and was notified that cp (running from cron) was
unable to copy several files due to "disk full"--I use cron to make
nightly backups to a second drive mounted on /mnt/drive2. Since the
second drive is MUCH larger than necessary, and since the old files are
removed (rm -rf) before new files are copied, I was puzzled. When I
tried to umount /mnt/drive2 I got another error message "unable to write
to mtab.temp" or something similar. When I ran df it showed / at 100%.
All other partitions were fine.

Since /tmp /var /usr and /home are all on separate partitions, I don't
understand how / could possibly fill its partition (128 MB). I checked
all the remaining subdirectories in root and can't find anything
requiring that much space. What's going on? How do I recover?

System is RH 6.0 with 2.2.14 kernel. No other kernels installed.

I use it regularly. Don't know if it is ready for prime time. But, I
have never had it crash X or system. It does have a habit of
disappearing for no reason though. No java support yet (maybe not a bad
thing), at least that I can tell. Some other limitations too. Seems to
do a great job of rendering. Plenty of minor quirks. Has support for
skins, which is nice. I don't use mail/news in either, but have a feeling
that mozilla is little more behind in that department. But then again, I
don't have that many problems with NS. I think most crashes are java
related -- at least here.

And also make sure it's in your path.
If the script is in the current directory, just typing the name
will not execute it unless "." is in your path. However, putting "."
in your path is usually not a good idea for security reasons.
Try typing ./<file> instead.

Another possibility is that you've put the script in a directory
which is in your path but the shell doesn't know it's there because
the shell reads the direcories in $PATH only when it starts. To get it
to find new executables you have to either start a new shell
or type "rehash". This forces the shell to re-build it's hash table
of executable things.

ELKS: the Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset.
http://www.elks.ecs.soton.ac.uk/
This is intended for 8086/88 and 80286 pc's, palmtops and embedded systems.
I don't think it's quite ready for real use though.

If you want something unix-like and free for a 286, have a look at Minix.

Problem solved. I did not have my second drive automounting on boot via
fstab and had rebooted my system several days ago. Cron was therefore
initiating a copy to the directory /mnt/drive2 which filled up.
Deleting /mnt/drive2 then recreating it solved my problem. Needless to
say, the second drive is now automounting!

Just did it with 2 machines (486, pentium), no problem. However it does
some silly fscking of the DOS partitions on the same drive for some bizarre
reason.

Hi All.

I have been trying to create an audio cd using cdrecord, but have been
coming up unsuccessful. I have read the CD Writing HOWTO and the
cdrecord man page, but cannot understand what is happening when I try to
write. I have a memorex crw 1622 burner record/rewrite speed=2, read =
6, and it is dev=0,0,0 all the tracks are wav files that sound great
after they are burned. the problem is that I cannot get the whole cd to
burn into a playable disc.

I have tried to write each track individually without fixating, and then
just run cdrecord dev=0,0,0 -fix, but i get errors when I fixate the
disc.

This is what happens when i try to write all at once.

The US is very democratic. If a clear majority of people
agreed on an issue there isn't a official or corporation that could
stop them from making it law. There are limits to what commercials
can convince people to do, and to want.

Your kind of comment always comes from somebody upset because they
can't get their personal agenda put into law. They want something,
claim that 'the American People' want it, yet somehow the 'special
interest
groups' block 'progress.' But really it is the activists own failure
to convince other citizens just like themselves that they are right.
Sure it's frustrating that other people don't want what you do, but
it beats the alternative of accepting a dictator in hopes of getting
one that agrees with you.

It is so easy to get along very well in the US. Just get up each
morning, do a job competently, and you will be basically fine. You
can get by with little or no initiative. Or you can do more and get
more.

The whiners never clearly articulate their vision, only that they don't
like this and they don't like that. Of course they cannot point to
an actual example of a role model state. How could they ever be so
negative if they read about what life was like in the past. Just like
the hippies, hating society yet surviving as parasites on its back
all the while.

Yes there are horrible problems but you are throwing out the baby with
the bath water. It is not all bad.

Distribution? You mean SuSE 6.4? Or are you asking for something else?

I have the base system loaded. I just a have a few problems with LILO and
setting up my 2 NICs. Once I am there, I have plenty of documentation on
how to masque.

No.

Linux (any version) is an operating system kernel that is not
compatable with any current Microsoft OS. IIS (any version) is a
Microsoft Windows application requiring a Microsoft Windows OS to
execute on.

Perhaps you meant to ask if an unnamed application running on a system
that uses the Linux 2.0.33 kernel would be able to properly converse
over a network to IIS v4.0 running on a Microsoft Windows platform. If
so, then we can't answer that question until you tell us more.

I downloaded Mandrake 7.1 by a v90 modem and
IglooPro work wonders.

Sounds like a cable or hardware problem.

Hum, is that card supported?

Sounds like the wrong driver for the card or the refresh rate is way
out sync. Try 800x600 @ 16bbp and see what you get.

Make sure the card is listed if not you will have to revert to 256
color 800x600.
