This might not be the right NG to ask but I do not read the HW-related
groups. So my question is:
Is there a program for linux to adjust the ink-tanks of a HP Deskjet
670C, to start the cleaning-routine for the printer-heads and so
forth. Thanks to HP there is no way to do these things without SW
anymore (I know from a friend that you could do them on the panel of
older Deskjets).
I have done a bit of searching but did not find anything like this, so
I hope someone could help me. If someone could give me hints how this
is to be done (commands to be send to the printer etc.) I could try to
put them into a program (if I have the time).
Thanks,
Michael

That is not a problem but a feature: The ext2-fs (and other UNIX-fs as
well I guess) reserves a special amount of disk-space for kernel
uses. This way the kernel still can work properly if the filesystem
becomes flooded. It could be very nasty if the fs had no space left
and the kernel would write to it within some vital routine like
e.g. while logging during error-recovery.
For further information about this you should read the docs for the
filesystem and the kernel.

What *exactly* do you mean by this: The amount of uses_space plus
free_space equals total_space probably, but does total_space on the
NFS-client equal total_space on the server?
If it does not the client (or the server, I do not know who) really
sums free_space and used_space up and does not inquire the total_space
separatedly.

You will find that any multiuser/multitasking operating
system needs to shut its filesystems down properly before
rebooting or you are asking for trouble. It's not the
filesystem that has to handle powerdown better, it's the
system operator.

Actually, there shouldn't be the need to
reinstall X. You should just simply install the
required library itself.
I haven't followed this but if your using
Red Hat you can use the RPM to install just the X
library that you need... at least for this purpose
RPM works.

stop using outlook. It's a horrible piece of shit that can do neat
things like erase your windows registry and other nasty things, simply
by being told to by a piece of malicious e-mail (ie, Melissa virus).
Use Netscape mail. It works great for everything except if you need to
send/receive email that uses double-byte characters, ie, Japanese,
Chinese, Korean, etc.. *and*, it can send in plain text to some
recipients and html to others - you can specify in the addressbook.
I personally send text-only to everyone, because I hate html emails.. :)

What happened to /usr? Did you just mess up the entry in /etc/fstab?

generating. A wise purchaser would take the tens of thousands of
dollars spent on NT client licenses and buy more Linux boxes for
redundancy.

Not anymore (I've moved onto Tribes), but I preferred to play Q2 under
Linux vs. Win95. No speed difference. More stable under Linux. Under
Win95 Q2 would crash at least twice a nite and usually more. At 1/4 of
the time it would take out the TCP/IP stack meaning I had to reboot.
Under Linux I never crashed (once I had it setup correctly) and having
the modem drop connection never corrupted the TCP/IP stack. I played for
hours under Linux and only stopped when I wanted not because my system
had crashed once again. I was running with a 3Dfx board.
Supposedly you can run Q2 under X. I never got this to work. I was
hoping to do this so I could monitor the TCP/IP stream. It seemed to me
that I was getting flooded and wanted to prove it. And if so counter
attack.

When my significant other started using the computer, she had no clues
about everyting, and since I use vi a lot, I taught her vi on a unix
machine. Since then, she uses the vi as her editor, and even on
windows machines, we still use the vi (elvis).
When recently she had to use the macintosh, she started screaming at
me. What happened to the ESC, the i (insert), the o(open line) key?
vi BECAME intuitive to her. Mouse keys aren't. After a few weeks,
these complaints have died down. Granted, she still occasionaly uses
the ESC key, etc on the mac, but she is slowly getting used to it.

Please define "UNIX". Which one are you talking about?
And which architecture are you talking about for Linux?
I hope you are not asking, if a program compiled for an x86 will run on e.g.
a Sun, aren't you?
On the other hand you can always use cross-compilation to solve even the
wildest scenarios.

I've got a similar problem, and I know how you feel. Especially when using
the spreadsheet, if I change a font, the screen won't refresh with the new
font, even though everywhere it says I've changed it. But there's much worse
that comes from this... If I print it (and I presume it will do the same for
presentations), the old fonts remain, no matter what I do. So far I haven't
found a run-around to this solution, even with 5.0.1, but I'll keep working on
it and let you know as soon as possible.
