Try knapster. I don't run KDE, but this is another one of those nice
little applications that runs without it.

That's what I thought, but the binutils package WAS installed. I had to

It currently includes nothing in /root or any of its subdirectories when
it's run as a cronjob (updatedb&), but includes it when I do it by hand
(updatedb&). What can possibly be the difference?

Recently built a new box and, for lack of a floppy drive, I installed an

compiled support for ATAPI floppy into the kernel. I can mount the
LS120 (hda), and can read my old boot floppy, but cannot create a boot
floppy using "mkbootdisk", and I can't boot from my old boot floppy

If you made it through the partitioning of the drive then reboot to DOS
and run fdisk. You should see the partition changes since FIPS make a
second DOS partition.

It's not quite dead yet. :-) But perception will sometimes create a
situation even though it didn't completely match reality to start with.
In any case -- stability and legacy support are not mutually exclusive,
and of course OS/2 clearly demonstrates that. But people will take the
easy way out, believing press releases and the words of industry pundits
rather than depending on personal experience, so most of them will never
know what they missed out on a number of years ago. :-(

Subject: Red Hat 6.2 - why do only some kernal modules load?
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 05:30:02 -0000
Hi all,
Something has been confusing me - I recently updated a couple of servers
to RH 6.2 amd noticed that neither netatalk nor nfsd started at bootup
(despite the appropriate init.d scripts being run). The problem turned out
to be that neither the nfsd or appletalk modules were loaded into the
kernel. Manually entering insmod nfsd etc. followed by the rerunning the
init.d scripts and all was well.
Of course I could put these commands into a start-up script, but why is
this necessary. it was not in ealier RH releases. I notice that other
kernel modules such as that for nfs (the client)are autoloaded when needed
(as autoclean - so they are alos unloaded if not used). How can you make
nfsd or appletalk modules behave in this way?

Maybe if RedHat lights up a few more OC-192 connections and a couple
dozen HPUX V-Class servers then you *might* be able to get thru.

Isn't there a command in FTP that allows you to use one FTP server as a
proxy for launching a connection to another FTP? I seem to remember reading
something about that....
Speaking as somebody who was in the same situation as "me" about 8 months
ago, I can say quite plainly that I didn't "wipe/reformat/reinstall". I was
running services that I shouldn't have: FTP, HTTP, Telnet, etc. All of the
services that come active by default in most distros.
All I did was close all ports. As I was running the services for internal
use, I went out, bought a $100 office machine (IBM Personal Computer 350,
for those who are interested), and put the services on that machine, behind
the firewall. I realize that it doesn't protect me from all kinds of
attacks, but it seems to have stopped all but the most determined attacker.
Only one attack has been made since the ports were closed, and that was a
"nuke" attempt by some idiot trying to exploit the Pentium F0 0F bug on a
system running with an AMD processor. :)
I realize that you're trying to run an FTP, but be smart about it. Have a
decent firewall between you and your internet connection. If you want to
share files, then use ATd to schedule times when an FTP tunnel will be
openned through your firewall, or better off, have a friend ICQ you when
they want to FTP, and you manually open the tunnel, and close it when
they're done.
The only other viable suggestion that I've seen here is to use httpd
instead of ftpd. Post it on an HTTP server, because (in most cases) users
only have read permissions.

If /root is not readable by all users, perhaps the cron job runs updatedb
as some user such as "nobody".

Subject: 'no such file or directory' (permissions problem?) in cgi-bin
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 06:18:04 GMT
I can't even get my CGI scripts to run in the shell. I suspect it's a
problem with the permissions. As an aside, I am running a firewall with
a strong ruleset (trinityOS) and may have changed the default
permissions -- it shouldn't matter though, I 'chmod 777' to the cgi-bin
directory and 'chmod 755' to the *.cgi files inside.
I copied the scripts to /home/httpd/cgi-bin (I'm running red hat) and
then 'chmod 0755 cpanel.cgi' as recommended in the docs. It looks like
they exist when I look in the directory but not when I try to run them,
see:
#ls -l c*
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 16865 Sep 24 19:11 cpanel.cgi
#./cpanel.cgi
bash: ./cpanel.cgi: No such file or directory
What the #?!@? hehe Herein is my problem - the file appears to exist
and be in the directory but bash cannot run it.
I had first thought it was an Apache problem with me not having CGI
scripts enabled (I do now), but the logs gave me this message too so I
thought I'd try it from the command line. Something else must be wrong.
What's going on? I must be missing something easy.
The script is a perl5 script and I checked the path it is using to find
perl; it's correct. I am logged in as root and httpd is running as
nobody. Please CC: me if you do a follow-up ([EMAIL PROTECTED]), in
case I miss it here.

Hallo James, I don't know how big is your harddisk. But I make a good
experience with 2 GB. The normal setup eats ca. 1,2 GB of your disk.
Don't worry about LILO and the disk cylinder. The LILO version in
Mandrake 7.1 can cope with more cylinders. If you like a pretier
Bootmanager then you can try GRUB. Mandrake will ask you to choose at
the end of installation.

The difference is that with the linear option the LBA addresses are
stored in /boot/map rather than the CHS addresses. Thus at boot time
the lilo loader will get the current disk geometry from BIOS and use
that to convert to CHS address that the BIOS int13 needs. When linear
is not specified the geometry is as the kernel knows it at the time the
lilo loader is installed, and in some cases this geometry might differ
from the geometry the BIOS will use.
Now, with the latest lilo which supports the extended int13 call, the
conversion between CHS and LBA address can be skipped entirely, which
simplifies things quite a lot. Bear in mind that on SCSI drives, the
classic int13 BIOS code needs to translate CHS addresses back to LBA
address again, which is the only thing SCSI drives have ever used,
and which is now also what the LBA IDE drives will be using.

As it appears you have done upgrades and not fresh installs
things on your box may differ from mine as I believe redhat tries
to save your configuration when you upgrade. I did a fresh
install of 6.2 as I wanted to change the way my disks were
partitioned.
If it were my box I would read /usr/include/paths.h and find out
where the system expects utmp to be. The line would look something
like this...
#define _PATH_UTMP "/var/run/utmp"
I would then do the following as root...
touch /var/run/utmp
chmod 664 /var/run/utmp
chgrp utmp /var/run/utmp

Probabily you have mounted the partition like an MSDOS partition,
try using a VFAT partition that support long filenames.
