More likely 'Quid Fugit Demonstratio' ('Which eludes demonstration'), simply
because nobody has an original ibm pc to either prove or disprove.
But what does Jean have to say about this?
I've been so bold as to cc him on this one.

Hi, hope someone can help me with this...I've searched Dejanews to no
avail...
I've just managed to complete the installation of Redhat Linux 5.2 from
CD.....for some reason the process would just lock up on disk accesses, so
it took quite a while!
Now, when I try to boot Linux from the Lilo prompt, it says "Loading
Linux......" then just freezes. The same happens if I boot from a floppy
disk, and when I type "rescue".
I have my / partition installed on the last 900Mb of a 3Gb drive, with 100Mb
of swap space. Is this a 1024 cylinder problem?
Any help appreciated. Here's my setup:
AMDK6-2 333, 64Mb RAM, first hard drive is a 3Gb drive, second a 12.7Gb
drive.
CL Banshee PCI, SB Live Value!

In /etc/ppp/options remove the line begining with LOCK. In fact, empty
the whole file, but don't delete it.
Next, as root do: chmod a+s /usr/sbin/pppd
Edit /etc/permissions and change the permission for /usr/sbin/pppd to
6755 so that the next time you run YaST it won't remove the suid and
cause you problems again.

Subject: Kernel 2.2.5 problems...
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 22:17:32 GMT
I've recently tried upgrading to Kernel 2.2.5, but am running into a couple
of problems. I'm running RH5.0, with all the upgrades as per the 2.2
changes doc.
My first problem was if I tried compiling the parallel port support as a
module. Although everything compiles and installs correctly, I get the
following error in /var/log/messages:
Apr 18 17:27:58 racer modprobe: can't locate module parport_lowlevel
I checked the dependencies in /lib/modules/2.2.5/modules.dep, but there is
no reference to such a module. Does anyone know how I can fix this problem?
If I compile the parallel port support into the kernel (ie: not as a
module), it works, but otherwise, it isn't recognized. Any ideas?
My second problem is with the APM. I am upgrading from 2.0.32. I'm running
this on a PII (ATX motherboard), but for some reason, the "poweroff on
shutdown" feature doesn't work with 2.2.5. Under kernel 2.0.32, it would
automatically poweroff my PC, but 2.2.5 just displays the "System halted"
message. The system is running on an Asus P2B motherboard. Are there any
special things I have to do to get 2.2.5 to auto-powerdown the system?
Final question. My /var/log/messages file displays a couple of error
messages that disturb me, and I'm not sure what to do to rectify them. The
first lines after reboot are:
Apr 18 17:25:45 racer syslogd 1.3-3: restart.
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: klogd 1.3-3, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: Loaded 5995 symbols from /boot/System.map.
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.2.5.
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: Error seeking in /dev/kmem
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: Error adding kernel module table entry.
Apr 18 17:25:46 racer kernel: Linux version 2.2.5 ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
(gcc version 2.7.2.3) #6 SMP Sun Apr 18 17:21:46 EDT 1999
Does anyone know what the error msgs "Error seeking in /dev/kmem" and "Error
adding kernel module table entry" mean? I haven't updated the
/boot/modules-info file - I don't know where to find that one either.
THanks for all the help!
Eric

I don't have slackware, but on RedHat 5.1, there is a file /etc/inittab.
in this file is a line:
id:3:initdefault:
Which I changed to
id:5:initdefault:
That changed the startup from "normal" to X. This was in a comment in the
same file. Perhaps there is such a file with similiar comments in slack?

Add this to your /etc/conf.modules
---8<---
options g_NCR5380 dtc_3181e=1 ncr_addr=0x300 ncr_irq=254
---8<---
The 0x300 base address may vary (look at your /proc/ioports, the card will go
from 0x300 downwards in 0x20 steps until it finds "unoccupied space"). Using
the wrong base address will result in a kernel oops, so be careful.
The "modprobe g_NCR5380" somewhere in your rc.local (or wherever you want,
as long as it is before you try to scan.
One thing: THIS IS SLOWER THAN A SNAIL. This comes from the stupid design of
the card, which in standard configuration doesn't use interupts. Sadly I
haven't been able to enable interrupts on my card, so I think I'll use an
adapter cable and connect it to my main SCSI card (hope this won't pollute
Ultra SCSI too much).
Hope this helps (feel free to contact me if you have problems with it)

Subject: Windows is trying to read my linux hd?
Date: Sun, 18 Apr 1999 20:11:26 -0400
Hi all!
I have been a linux user for quite some time now, and prior to last week
I only had 2 hard drives. Hda, a 6.4g Quantum Fireball, was home to
windows and my mp3's, and I had hdb, a cheap 4g drive housing linux.
Well, my mp3's outgrew my 6 gig drive, so I bought a new hard drive- a
12.7g Quantum Fireball, strictly for mp3's and linux backups.
My mbr had always been on hda windows98) and I have always used System
Commander, a third party boot manager. I had this great idea to move
around my drives. My plan as executed: hda is now the 4 gig, home to
windows. Hdb is the 6 gig, home to Slackware pre-4.0. Hdc is my Atapi
cdrom (no change here). Hdd is the new 12.7 gig- fat32, 8 gigs mp3s, and
4.5 gigs backups. I thoroughly formatted the whole lot of hard drives
before installing anything.
Now here's the stumper! Suddenly windows is assigning my linux drive a
drive letter, though it fails to read it, and it causing my windoze boot
time to be more than 10 minutes long! I have formatted my new linux
drive a million times, using all sort of drive utilities. I have used
tweakUI to dis-allow thae drive letter it assigns it, and this only
helped when opening windows explorer-- still had the painfully slow boot
time. I have re-formatted it for fat32-- it obviously has no problem
like this. I have totally removed any sort of filesystem, and partition
table (with System Commander Deluxe)-- and it boots fine this way, and
winblows does not assign a drive letter to it in this state either. If
it has ext2fs, the only way windows doesn't puke, is if I set the linux
hard drive to 'none' in my BIOS, and boot into windows that way.
I am so totally sick of formatting. Is there anyway I can fix this?
*especially* if it doesn't involve formatting? Slackware is configured
so perfectly, I would hate to have to recreate it, again.
Thanks for your time, if you have a suggestion, I prefer email but I
will check the newsgroup too. If you enjoy music, go to my website and
get some mp3's (goatrance and drum & bass primarily)

You need to install the glibc-devel package. Redhat usually
separates the header files and run time libraries into
separate packages. The one with the header files has the
string -devel added to the package name.
