Subject: Formatting Problems with floppy disk
Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 07:57:18 +0200

Hallo,
i'm trying to create a root- and boot-disk for linux-installation on my PC
(Win 95, Pentium 230). I formatted a 1,44"-disk correctly under Windows/Dos.
Then I got the root-file color.i , extracted it with gzip.exe and tried to
write the extracted root-file "color" with the program rawrite.exe to the
floppy disk. But at the end I recieved always the error-message "Bad sector
detected 1".

So I tried it again with an other disk. Again no formatting problems but the
same error-message after rawrite. What is the reason for that failure? What
did I do wrong?

Thanks for your interest
Wendelin

I suggest you have a look at KDE or GNOME ;) They're MUCH nicer then Fvwm2,
more what your used in with the windows GUI, but MUCH more configurable ;)
KDE is my personal choice, but other prefer GNOME.... It might be in your
distribution, I'm not sure else have a look at www.kde.org ot www.gnome.org

Back in '97 when i started with Linux, I used Running Linux 1st Ed. (!) and I
know I couldn't have managed without it. It is good for getting some Linux
base-knowledge, but many things were (and are) somewhat outdated. But then
again, that forced me to try out some stuff, contact newsgroups, and reading
a lot of FAQ's, howto's etc. which also has been a fruitful experience. I
still use RL from time to time and I expect 2nd. to be even better. If a 3rd
Ed. comes out I'm bound to buy it (the 1st Ed. I have is borrowed). Running
Linux is an OK choice for a newbie, it might not be the best but I'm managing
without having to buy any supplemet to it. Watch out though, I think 2nd Ed.
is quite RedHat-oriented.

How does one increase the number of lines available when you scroll up

With my text mode at 132x50, I find that I have the current page, and
the previous page, which gives me 100 lines of "history". I would like

no doubt during their test NT was indeed faster than linux. why?

a) they were sponsored by Microsoft
b) they used hardware that NT runs exceptionally well on
c) they tweaked NT almost to death, so much that its settings would be
useless on even slightly unreliable networks
d) they didn't tweak linux, not even the basics. not enough file handles
so apache crashes. not set to use more than 1GB of RAM. not optimised
for the type and number of processors. samba was crippled. and so on,
and so on.

ofcourse NT on a good-for-NT machine tweaked to the limit by people who
know NT in and out performs much better than an out-of-the-box
installed-by-newbies ill-configured linux.

btw, Mindcraft did exactly the same thing to Sun and to Novell, also
sponsored by Microsoft. afaik Sun is still fighting Mindcraft over their
incident, but they're not making much progress.

If you have to send outgoing mail to a specific SMTP server, try
editing the servers: line in /etc/nmh/mts.conf[0] to include that
server. My line reads:

        servers: smtphost.aber.ac.uk localhost

A better situation is to leave it sending mail to localhost and let
sendmail deal with it (because this will work with other mail progs
too). Have you set up sendmail properly? It's difficult, but
Linuxconf (more recent versions, certainly) will do an awful lot
of it for you.

The message about .Xauthority is exmh-specific. It's using some tcl
thing which is only secure under a session that uses xauth (easiest
way: use xdm - starting with startx generally doesn't do it).

I am not familiar with "contact managers" nor Symantec ACT, and I am sure that
others may have a suggestion more in line with the TYPE of application that
you are looking for, but all of the data and most of the functionality of what
you mention could be put into and be made available from an LDAP (Internet

There is none (or many, depending on your point of view).

Files which are executed at boot time (ususally with root permission) are
found in /etc/rc.d. They are executed in order, depending on the target
run-level, e.g. single user, multi-user, X11. It is configurable and depends
on your distribution which files are actually used.

Then there are global and local files which are being executed at login-time
(more precise: for every login shell). Typical example for the csh family is
"~/.login".
Then there are global and local files, which are being executed whenever a
shell starts, even when executing a "system" call or starting a sub shell in
e.g. emacs. Typical example is e.g. "~/.cshrc" for the csh family of shells.
Please consult the man page for your favorite shell to find out, which
files are executed in which order for your shell.

Hi,

you are right this **IS** strange.

But I need more information.

at first: did your friend has had any problems with his Disk or
some other hardware **before** you tried to install LINUX ?
( You should know that Linux doesn't like ANY damaged sectors or
IRQ overlayings. Winbloze can't go along with this either, but you
won't get the correct error messages - sometimes. )

at second: did you change the hardware configuration **before** you
tried to install LINUX ?

at third: what kind of cards are in the system, what kind of bus-system
do you have ? kind of drive (modell and so on...) ?

>so i report the output as follows:
>
>1) hda: read-intr: error=0x10 {SectorIdNotFound} CHS=6/4/9

>5) end_request: I/o error, dev 03:01 (hda), sector= 2558
>6) hda: irq timeout: status= 0xd0 (Busy)

Here are some tips:

- check all IRQ's. Especially the ones for Disks !!!

- check I/O adresses. You can't install to cards/pieces of hardware with the
same I/O or IRQ !

- It **could** be a software problem: if you have a motherboard that has a
broken I/O - chipset. ( OK,OK this is a hardware BUG. ) --->
CHECK the type of chipset (I/O) on board, write the name down and read the
SUSE manual about "support for special IDE chipsets", then compile your own
kernel. ( you can ask me about that, but you need a **running** system for
this. --sorry--

( And, - hey: I was a nerd (18 years ago). --->
even Linus Thorvalds was a nerd. )

I'm not clear as to why you need the "newest" header files for
things. In general, you should use the header files that correspond
to the libraries you have installed. If you're installing things from
source, 'make install' will generally put the header files in the
right place.

Macro> Is there any HOWTO or WWW site which could help me to
Macro> understand how to bring my /usr/include/ dir on the newest

Install the relevant -dev or -devel RPMs for the libraries you have
installed. For /usr/local/include, which is where things you've built
yourself should go, run 'make install' from the sources you built the
installed libraries from.

Macro> Is that really correct what I should always try to avoid the
Macro> includes which come with kernel tarball and use glibc ones ?

Well, that depends on what you're doing. You probably shouldn't
replace what's in /usr/include/linux, in general; on Debian machines,
those headers correspond to a known working kernel, against which
glibc was built. Replacing them can cause strange compatibility
problems. Programs that have legitimate need to kernel headers
(e.g. are building a kernel module) can have proper include files
added with -I/usr/src/linux/include or equivalent.

I would use disk for boot though, too damm slow. The boot manager is a better choice.
