You are already there! Click on background and see if you don't get a
menu. You probably need to take some time to learn something about the
windowmanager so you can set it up to your liking. Sounds like a minimal
config.

What distro and version?

Can we have a description of how 'not working' manifests itself in this
instance. A URL of where you got it from might help too, also the
exact program naem, how you're invoking it and any error messages/output
that you might be getting.

Linux by nature can be many things, presumably you've got all that you
need, you just need to turn all the server bits on for the bits you want,
you just need to do some research to find out how to set the various parts
up, it doesn't always involve installing anything new or making major
changes, but changing settings in existing config files and asking linux to
reread those files.

Hope this points you in the right direction, a book such as 'Running Linus'
(O'Reilly), is a good place to start, and all the information is in
one place.

I also have a Dell P-90 (the chip with the "infamous" fault). I was able to
update the BIOS (for Y2k reasons). Call them or try their web-site. I
don't remember how I did it, but I am sure it was before I converted the
Dell to linux, so the patch they sent me was DOS-based. That may pose a
problem.

A few months back I tried dual-booting between Win2k and Red Hat Linux 6.1.
Linux kept choking so I killed it. Now, a few months later, I'm trying to
dual-boot between Win2k and Win98 by switching boot-up drives in the BIOS,
where Win98 is going on the same hard drive that I had put Linux on before.
But I can't seem to be able to get rid of LILO. I have formatted the drive
from within Win2k and from within DOS, and I tried "fdisk /mbr" but still no
go. The whole Linux kernel seems to be booting, but bootup dies when it
tries to mount the file system since I formatted the drive.

What gives? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Jon Davis

I found the package on the CD !!

disk 1, \mandrake\rpms\Pgcc-1_1.rpm

this seems to have loaded the gnu c compiler (checked using: gcc -v)

BTW I did download a package from internet but it then wanted gcc-cpp
package too.

Thanks to everyone.

Subject: System Lockup using sound
Date: Mon, 20 Mar 2000 00:45:28 GMT

Although I am using Mandrake 7.0 this problem has occurred with the
6.0 version. When I am using the Mpeg player or the CD player in KDE,
for some unexplained reason the entire desktop will lockup solid. The
hard drive light stays on and the keyboard and mouse are frozen, a la
Windows. The only way I can get out of this situation is to power on
and off. I have a SoundBlaster AWE64 value card and the sound module
loaded as configured during the install of the system. Both of these
players will play and I can listen to either a CD or a Mp3. However,
at some point they will stop working, freezing the system.

I don't know if there is a problem with the hardware or the sound
driver that is being loaded. Since everything plays OK, I think that
it is setup properly. In order to find out if the driver is giving me
a problem I would need to load a different sound module other than the
one that comes with the operating system. I am aware of another sound
module that some other distributions use, OSS maybe.

Is it possible to not load the sound module that I have and try to
install another one with Mandrake 7.0. If this is possible then how
do I do this? Any help would be appreciated because my file system is
being ruined whenever I have to reboot.

I couldn't help but chime in and note that your users might save money by
skimping on the computers, but at the cost of feeling micromanaged, in a
sense, by their IT guy. The concept of using X Windows or Windows NT
Terminal Server is quite popular *in theory* among IT admins, but it is
understandably unpopular in practice because, frankly, people want to use
nice, new Pentium III computers of their own, and will not stop short of
making all kinds of political noise if they have to use terminal nodes to a
shared server that won't even load Microsoft Word 2000 documents correctly.

First, try pressing Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad-Minus) and Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad-Plus).
Second, try running the Xfree86 configuration tool that came with your
distribution. RedHat and Mandrake use "Xconfigurator", SuSE uses "SaX",
Debian uses "XF86Setup". Become root and run one of those programs, then
answer its questions. As a last resort, try entering the command
"xf86config" as root--this will ask you a series of questions in a text
console, and write up an XF86Config file the X-Server will use.

You didn't post your graphics card model. I must warn you that some video
cards, most notably the cheaper Trident and SiS cards, are a royal pain in
the arse to get working under Linux. If you're still having trouble after
trying the basic stuff above, post the exact make+model of your video
card, the distro you're using, and any error messages you received before
to the comp.os.linux.hardware NG.

>anything. The smartest computer guy I know installed the same stuff as I and

Find some smarter computer guys, then :-/ This basic X-configuring stuff
is usually covered in the manual that comes with your distro...

Hey ho.

I upgraded to Slackware 7.0 last night, and my xmms no longer works.
I have xmms 1.0.1 and I installed pretty much *all* of the
distribution.

Since then, xmms gives me nothing but "Segmentation fault". I have
recompiled it a dozen times, even going so far as deleting the source

okay.

I'm clueless how to find out what's wrong. How do I even start
looking? Any help would be appreciated.
