This is a standard problem with the lilo boot loader for
booting Linux. In order to boot Linux
from the hard disk, the lilo boot loader has to be able to
find the kernel with a BIOS call. Older BIOSs were limited
in which cylinders they could access to cylinders below cylinder
1024. Hence, the kernel and associated files (usually in the
boot directory) must be entirely in a partition below cylinder
1024. Apparently the Storm Linux installer is complaining
because it can't create such a partition, perhaps because
a preexisting Windows partition (or resized Windows partition)
extends beyond that cylinder. I have no experience with
Storm Linux.

Newer BIOSs use an extended BIOS call and are not so limited.

Other versions of Linux, e.g., RedHat, will allow you to
install Linux without lilo and then boot Linux from a floppy.
Also, the latest version of lilo (which is not yet shipped as
part of any of the standard releases) can be set to use the
extended BIOS call if your BIOS is capable of using it.
So if you know what you are doing, you can install it later
and be able to boot from the hard drive.

If you give us more details about how your drive is partitioned,
we may be able to suggest a partitioning which will work for
your machine. All you really need is a small /boot partition
of about 10-10MB which is entirely below cylinder 1024.

This can also happen if you ftp'd the file to your host in ascii mode
instead of binary mode.

Reset button work in Windows, and in Linux but when it hangs when I press
reset button, the graphic turn off and black screen and nothing. To restartt
computer I have to turn power off and on again.
I have DardDrive on first chanel as Master and CD on second IDE chanel as
Slave. Sometimes I add my removable HardDrive on the same chanel as CD but as
a mastwer.
So what shuld I do???? Can you give any suggestion????

Can you believe it or not, I found the solution at RedHat support site, read
below now my problem is solved. Thanks for replying.

ARMH

=================
3.10 Sendmail seems to be working fine, but when my users try to connect to
the mailhost to POP their mail, they can't connect. What's wrong?
This really isn't a sendmail issue but you probably don't have the POP3
daemon installed. On Red Hat Linux, it's part if the IMAP RPM (IMAP-4.5-4).
Use RPM to check and see if it's installed using the command rpm -q imap. If
you get a null response it's not installed and you need to install it to get
this to work. Just mount your CD-ROM using the command mount /mnt/cdrom and
install the IMAP RPM using the command rpm -Uvh
/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS/imap-4.5-4.i386.rpm. Try connecting from your clients
again. If you still have a problem have a look at your /etc/inetd.conf. Look
for the line which ends with ipop3d and make sure it's not commented out
(e.g. prepended with a `#'). If it is, remove the pound sign, restart inet
using the command /etc/rc.d/init.d/inet restart and try connecting again.
Unless some step discussed above was missed, that should take care of the
problem.

well said. But, if someone bruted forces your key (however unlikely
that may be if you have a strong passphrase..), and they dont need a
password too, they wont even show up in the logs. at least this way
you know you'll see the attack in the logs. good reassurance.

PGP is free? thats odd, cause i had to pay for it when i used it....

;-) PGP is an examble of what happens when you only have a hand full
of people hacking code. When you have peope world wide, the collective
consceince is unimaginable, and unbelievable. The options and
opertunity is greater for the OS. The only thing that i see holding
linux back is the market. People are just comming around to seeing
what it can do; once more of the market sees what linux can and will
do, you will see the curve of Linux support greater then anything
else, and with that curve, you see the use of Linux within the home
greater, and then you will end up having smarter users. With this, M$
will be knocked on their ass because people will what I saw, freedom.
And thats what people are after, freedom to choose what they want to
use, what they can use. What you dont see as a windows users is the
possablitlies. ( btw i am new to linux..only been useing it for 2
months) Your trapped in a protective bubble that lets you belive that
you have control of your computer. I can tell you that people are
getting sick of Windows, the ending possablitites. I am starting to
look at Linux as a revolution, kinda something like the US and her
Revolution against England ( i know thats a streatch, but the idea is
the same). I would rather have 100,000 people working on one OS world
wide for free, on their own time, then 175 people working 100 some
hours a week. Those 175 people are going to make more mistakes because
the ammount of hours and stress, compared to the 100,000 doing it on
their own time, for free. Though i am a strong belivier that they have
earned something and should get something. Thats my 2 cents.

My Linux (Red Hat 6.2, kernel 2.14 and 6.1) hangs. I run on the same
computer Windows 98 and it works without hangingsand is very stable, it
never hanged during last 1 year.. I would like use
only Linux on this computer but I can't. It hangs (freeze), the reset
button could not restart computer (black screen). I have to turn power
of (Hard reset). Please help me. What could be the reason.
I have Epox MVP3C2 mainboard, I use S3 868 PCI graphic card with 2 Mb
RAM on it.
I downloaded lately new kernel 2.14-12 and instaled it. After it things

went worst, my computer started eaven hangs at lower speed of the
processor.
It is realy strange that when I am adding additional PCI card I have to
slow down the speed of the mainboard and processor.

I have in my computer:
AMD K6-III 400 Mhz
Modem Zoltrix Internal Sp Phone V.34 (ISA)
TurtleBeach Malibu Sound card (ISA)
Realtek 8029 Network card (PCI)
Realtek 8129 Network card (PCI)
S3 Vision 868 PCI graphic card
Hard Drive 27 GB IBM - IDE ATA-66 - master on first controler
CD Rom x 32 slave on second controler

When I changed Voltage from 2.4 ( nominal) to 2.8 of the core
(processor) it little
help and it is not hanging so often. But than my procesor geting hotter.

I tried changing cards in slots , I take one network card away, but it
did not help. I tried 3 different bioses, without help.

Please give me some advice, I starting be mad about this problem.
Why the same computer not hang in Windows 98 (never) but in Linux very
often and it freeze tottaly, no responce and I have turn of power to
restart it, reset button did not restart it.
It hangs also in text mode, so it means that it is not related to X
Window.
I was using linux for 7 years but after this problems I started to give

I use dhcpd on a couple of machines. On all machines but one, dhcpd
uses about 500 to 700 K of memory. On the other machine it occupies
8000 to 9000 K. It does servers about 25 machines right know but even
with no leases it used the same memory.

Also, the memory is not grow like a mem leak. It starts at 8000 to
9000 k and stays there.

This is odd right. Any ideas?

The machines are RedHat 6.1 and 6.2. 2.2.16. Same version of dhcpd.

Check your power supply.

This sounds very similar to another person's problems here a couple
years ago: his system would run fine in Windows, and would run in Linux
until he let the computer idle. After 10 minutes or so of idle time it
would die. If he left a while(1) program running, it would work fine.

The problem was his power supply: when Linux idles, it issues a 'halt'
instruction to the CPU to sleep until the next interrupt. This puts the
CPU into a low-power mode as well and reduces draw on the power supply.
With a switching power supply, though, you need a certain amount of draw
or it becomes unstable. It didn't affect Windows because Windows
doesn't issue a halt: it just busy-loops, providing the equivalent of a
while(1) running at all times.

You certainly have a hardware problem: Linux can not disable the reset
switch.

Evidently rxvt is more up to date and tweaked for what I need it to do.

Subject: Changing hwclock settings to local and not UTC
Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 09:07:40 -0600

For some reason a machine that I now administer keeps wanting to change
the clock settings to UTC time, thus placing it 6 hours ahead of the
local time and the hardware clock. I do a date and it shows the correct
time and then I do a "hwclock --show" and it too is correct. However,
every time I place a time stamp on an image I post to the web (it's a
traffic cam box) it shows the time as being UTC. I have tried all the
settings for hwclock, date, clock and have tried using timetool utility
under Linux.
When booting up, it shows the clock being set to UTC. Just looking for
some way to remove this.
It's running Red Hat 6.2. Can someone please tell me where I can remove
the UTC settings and make it be the localtime? Thanks. I normally
wouldn't ask but I have done the RTFM things for them all and consulted
all the Red Hat books I have. Just hitting a brick wall here.
Thanks.
KJ
