The man pages does not completely say what are the valid options except for
the example of echo, mail, execute...

You can use the rpm query option (rpm -q -p pkgname.rpm -R) to get a
list of what's required. You can then check the libraries manually by
using rpm -q pkgname and install what's needed. If you have a
compatible library you may just need to link to the correct library
using ln. E.g., ln -s libExample.so libExample.so.6. The man page for
rpm (man rpm) has good information. The RedHat users guide probably
more useful though (http://www.rpm.org/support/RPM-HOWTO.html).

They are all different layers on top of the OS. It's too much to say
here but check out this URL:
http://www.linuxHQ.com/HOWTO/XWindow-User-HOWTO.html#toc8

It gives rundown on how some of these programs interact.

Depends on the package. Most often you'll DL a tgz file. First you'll
need to extract it (tar xfmz program.tgz). Then cd to the directory
just created (cd program). Run the configure script, if any
(./configure). Run the make (make). Change to root level access if
necessary (su). Run the make install (make install). This should put
the bin files in the correct places.
For multiple users to run them you'd need to put them in a publicly
accessible directory. /usr/local/bin is a good place. However, I don't
think RedHat has this in the path by default.

There is dotfile generator which uses a graphical frontend for fvwm & fvwm2.
And emacs. And bash. And tcsh. And some other stuff.

Got to http://www/imada.ou.dk/~blackie/dotfile and chose your download.

You'll need tcl/tk, and wish, or at least a link to it *must* be in /usr/bin

Hi to all,

With ktinstall i've installed a new theme (KDEOcean) for my KDE desktop.
The problem is that when I install another one, the panel below stays in
the
colors of the KDEOcean theme and does not change.

Does anyone have a solution for this, or is it possible to edit the panel
pics or
colors manually ?

Tnx in advance,

Hi
Well I have had netscape freeze my machine and it was more of a library
problem than a machine problem. Same thing happened when i tried to install
star office on a friends machine. The glibc library was not installed and it
froze the machine.

Hope that helps. check your libraries. Netscape has two versions one for
libc and one for glibc I think........

However 4.5 did bus error on me when i hit the whats related button a bunch
of times.

Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 01:38:03 GMT

Linux crashes when I do PPP dialup (when I say "ppp-on &" at the command
line), or when I try to send/receive fax.  This doesn't happen everyday;
happens once in 2-3 weeks. What could be the problem ?

I run RedHat 4.2 in my laptop with the PCMCIA card on IRQ 11 (two sockets).
One socket has the PCMCIA card, the other one is empty.

Since this happens only once in a while, should I assume this as a memory
allocation or DMA problem, and not an IRQ problem ? This is what I have in my
/proc/interrupts (the first column is the IRQ#. What is the middle column ?):

 0: 1300938 timer
 1: 8082 keyboard
 2: 0 cascade
 7: 1 sound blaster
 9: 199560 + serial
11: 2 i82365
12: 307395 PS/2 Mouse
13: 1 math error

 Ftp into ftp.sunet.se/pub8/os/Linux/distributions/redhat.iso/ and
download the redhat
.iso to your hard drive. Make sure you don't use netscape or a html
browser to d-load it for I have found it somehow messes up my files? Use
and ftp prog. Took me bout 2 hours to d-load by dsl. (Almost 600 megs).
Open Ezcd creator, click on new, highlight from iso image, and burn. I
had no problem at all. Just inserted the cd afterwards and rebooted to
the cd as it will boot for install if your bios supports it, and away
you go! :-)

 Good luck.

IIRC, you might try typing in the name of the setup program on the
command line, in an xterm window. That's what I did, but then I'm

Subject: authentication on ppp server

I'm pretty close to getting my ppp server up. mgetty does a fine job of
answering the call (I tried for hours on end to get uugetty to do the trick
but it just wouldn't!), I have AutoPPP setup and it launches PPP fine.
However, the authentication fails. I'm sure the pap-secrets file is setup,
as such:

jack hostname hisPassword

where hostname really is the output of hostname.

jack also has a normal login entry in /etc/passwd. In the debuggin trail I
do see that the ppp was started ok, but that authentication failed even
though the username and password name are correct as reported. I have tried
using the "login" option in the /etc/ppp/options file and setting
"hisPassword" to "". I've checked that I can su to jack using his password
so I'm sure the password is OK. That's left?

Thanks

Fine. Now can you please stop blathering about your hardware in
comp.os.linux.misc? Unless you're trying to run Linux on it, we don't
care whether you have a Soundblaster Live or a Soundblaster Dead.

Got to respond to one point, though, which seems to directly
contradict what you say above.

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but if Linux "DOES NOTHING [you]
need it to", why run it? Just so you can throw the phrase "Slashdot
longhair" around and quote version numbers?

Followups set ...

I don't think lp can talk directly to the hardware anymore in
2.2.x. Try loading parport and parport_pc before lp.

Hope this helps

Hi all:

Sorry that I have to send this question thru mulitple NGs, because I have
already tried a few NGs independently and got no replies. If you have
already seen this somewhere else, please ignore.

I have a question regarding to my Linux installation. I installed Linux
over the weekend. The installation seemed to have gone thru smoothly. But
when I tried starting Xwindows, it complains about the mouse protocal can't
be found.
What I chose is MS mouse compatible on COM 1 (I am using a MS mouse v2
without the scrolling thing at the middle). I actually tried choosing other
mouse types (like generic) and other COM ports, but stilll get the same
message. I think the mouse kind of worked before I tried the Xwindows,
because when I shutdown the windows it was stuck at the gpm line until I
move the mouse.

I read thru the menu and stepped by a few web sites, but found nothing
regarding to this. Any suggestions?

Thanks very much in advance.

Patrick.

To the contrary; they took the out-of-the-box Red Hat binaries and
recompiled them using options that are stated in the documentation to
hamper performance. Negative tweaking is nonetheless tweaking.
