Ehh? mpg123 does not include a X gui, use xmms instead. If you want to run
mpg123, do it from a cli, "mpg123 <name of mp3>".

If you're already running a 2.2 kernel, I'd say not - wait for the 2.4
kernel to become official and upgrade to that.

If you're running a kernel prior to 2.2, I'd say ues - you need to
upgrade anyway, so it might as well be to the latest release.

I won't be buying RH7. When the 2.4 kernel is finally released and RH
ships that (probably 7.1 or something like that), then I'll buy it.

Read the package list:

        http://www.redhat.com/products/software/linux/pl_rhl7.html

It's 2.2.16. The sale level you get from RH 6.0, 6.1 or 6.2, after
installing the latest kernel updates.

Dunno. I don't use these features.

I never had a problem with my hardware. I haven't installed RH7.

Here's the ISO image:

I have several NT machines printing through my linux box. One of them,
however, cannot print to the Linux machine and gives me an error I don't
understand. Hmmm... Why this one machine? Has anybody seen this error
message (from an NT machine) before?

        "Test page failed to print.

Filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."

Any insights?

Ok, well I have a 250 and RH 6.2 set up just as you do, sans the dos
partion so .....

How about the fact you're beyond the 1024 cylinder limit? I notice you've
got 2 partions and I assume the /boot is on /dev/rd/c0c0p1 just because of
that problem...

The fix? Well, you could get the newest Lilo that is supposed to allow
booting beyond the 1024 cyl limit. I haven't tried it yet, but I've heard
that it works well is you bios supports what it needs.

Best

Not without any more info.

Are you using lpr on NT to print to the Linux box? Installed samba on linux
so you can use NT's native printing system? Using NT4 or Win2k? Have you set
them up as stand-alone's, all in a workgroup, or part of a domain? From
which application are you trying to print? Please provide some more info on
your configuration, and what you have done so far. Be verbose.

Did a quick search on microsoft technet though, and it seems that it has
something to do with authentication, user-ids and passwords. If this is
correct, then my guess is that you are using a different user-id/password on
the one machine than on the others to connect to the linux printer. Check

Can someone give me the steps or tell me where to find the info on
setting up a Lexmark E310 on my Linux (Slackware 7.0) machine ?
I have read the printing FAQ, but it doesn't really tell me how to
do it step by step.

I know lpd is already running on my machine, so I might just need
to change some settings/configurations.

Thanks a million.

I cannot find this in the RH 6.1 docs that are on the CD, but I believe at
the boot prompt you enter "linux text" like this:

boot: linux text

Your video chip is not supported by XFree86 in RH 6.1 by default, but
could be configured manually as 4 MB Neomagic (even though it is 6 MB)
with the SVGA server or by compiling framebuffer support into the kernel
and using the FB server. For a monitor selection try LCD 1024x768 or
whatever your resolution is.

You either need a boot floppy, a primary /boot partition entirely below
cyl 1024 or a newer version of LILO that can boot beyond that. If you
have not written anything on your second FAT partition yet, you could
remove it and put it farther back or in an extended partition. Info on
how I partitioned the 9 GB drive on my F450 is at
http://www.de-srv.com/linux/sonyF450.html

When you get this all figured out, it would be helpful to write up your
own experiences to link from the Linux Laptop home page.

I don't know about everyone else, but when I did the upgrade (6.2 to 7.0) it
messed up my system. My printer wouldn't work anymore, my ppp connections got
messed up, and I couldn't use some of my old programs. I spent hours trying to
get everything working, to no avail. I gave up and did a clean reinstall of 6.2.
Now everything works fine.
