I've had a couple of similar experiences.

Not that it makes any real moral or legal difference, but I'm not so
sure it's a sign of disreputable retailers as it is a sign of
disreputable software. Many of these on line things are ludicrously
flaky. IOW they may not be TRYING to rip you off necessarily,
althought you're getting ripped off, just the same.

That's my guess, and if I'm wrong, forget I said it.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (David E. Fox) apparently said this:

Yes, it was RH5.1 - I didn't know it had a modified version of FDisk.
I tried their spport, which is totally worthless.

Can you please tell me where I can get the generic Linux FDISK,
please? Thanks!

If nothing else helps, then have a look at the psutils. They allow a ton of
manipulations to postscript files.
In the worst case you can use a print filter to pipe your file through them
in order to shift the page 5 cm up.

You actually need both: To INSTALL StarOffice you need the key that
comes with the distribution (It should be a piece of paper, about the
size of a postcard). To USE StarOffice after about six month you as
well have to register to StarDivision (might be done online or postal).

Is there a PointCast client -like tool for Unix? Ideally it would support
"intranet broadcasting" using multicast, and would allow some kind of
modification of the program (for example, I hate the PointCast ticker-tape
so I would like to write my own ticker-tape and replace this module in the
application).

Thanks.

Well, if there is no number->name mapping in DNS, then you
could ascertain what the range of numbers, and put fake names

75Mb Swap
150MB / root
the rest in /usr

I have "swap, / , /usr, /home, /var/log, /www, /squid, /public" but you dont
have the space just swap , root and /usr is fine.

Subject: Hanging on 2nd run of startx
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 22:43:33 -0500

I have installed Red Hat 5.2 on my system. I can run startx once. Upon
starting the program, I can hear my HD
grinding, intermittently, for a minute, or so, then the X-window
interface appears. After exiting & attempting to run the
program again, however, I get a black screen & no sound from my HD.
After rebooting, I can run it again with the same
results.

Actually, this applies to any attempt to run an X utility after running
one previously. For example, If I run "X
-probeonly", I get the results displayed & return to the prompt. Then,
if I attempt to run it again, or run "startx", I hang
on the black screen. Similarly, if I run "startx" first, then try "X
-probeonly", I hang on the black screen. Perhaps, upon
completing any X utility, some resources are not being released which
are necessary to run the same utility or any other
X utility.

I had a similar problem during installation. I think I was using the
XF86Startup utility, but I am not sure. I wasn't familiar
with Linux, yet & I was just following directions. (I have the $2:00 CD
from "Cheap Bytes", which included a utility for
creating a boot disk which launched the installation. I simply used
this, & followed instructions.) Anyway, upon
attempting to probe my video RAM, the system hanged. I had to restart
the installation & have it skip this probe in
order to install it, which it did, without further problems.

My video card is a Diamond Stealth 3D 3000 with S3 Virge chipset & 4 MB
VRAM.

Any suggestions anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike Mall

Subject: Adding Linux Client to NT Domain
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 20:12:09 -0400

Since we've been slow up at the office this past week <smile>...
I've been putting together a spare machine out of used parts to put
Linux on. My office has a Microsoft network with one NT server... which
acts as the firewall (using MS Proxy Server) between our LAN and the
Internet.

Anyway... Linux install was no problem, and I can ping the NT
server. My main purpose for wanting to do this is to learn how to use
Samba... I've played around to the point where I can see the server's
browse list (I'll learn how to actually use and share resources
tommorrow).

However... I have yet to figure out how to configure Netscape (or
KDE's browser, for that matter) to get past the MS Proxy Server firewall
to browse the internet. I have gone into Netscape's proxy settings and
put the server's IP address in for HTTP proxy, as well as SOCKS proxy
(I'm still a little fuzzy on what that one is, but I know that the
firewall supports it). Now when I try to browse somewhere a login and
password box pop up... but nothing I've tried works (I tried several
username and password combinations for accounts on the NT server).
Authentication keeps failing.

Am I correct in assuming that this authentication in question is
referring to having an acount on the NT machine, or perhaps something
else entirely? I was just hoping that someone out there reading this
has configured something similar before...

You can do this with formail and procmail; something like

$ formail < huge_mailbox -s procmail file_with_procmail_rules   # untested!

See the formail(1) and procmail(1) documentation to see exactly what to do.

If you are a programmer, it probably wouldn't be too hard to build one

I started my linux career with a Que book. "Special Edition Using Linux". I got
it in 1995. It came with Slackware 2.0.something. It was the best single book
I've used. Probably why I still use slackware (except for one disastrous
excursion into RH 5.1 that was mostly my fault).

I've browsed some M&T books on Linux. There is a series. I made notes from
"Linux: Configuration & Installation" and from "The Linux Network".

I've got a couple of O'Reily titles, but they're not strictly Linux-related
(except for "Linux in a Nutshell"). Hard to go wrong with the O'Reilly stuff,
especially for specific topics like DNS/BIND, Sendmail, Perl, etc. I strongly
recommend their title (approx.) "Essential Systems Administration".

Nothing like a good bookstore and some time to browse, though.

It is safe with many (most?) packages once installed, but occasionally
a package will want to find some support files there.

Assuming that these directories live in a partition mounted read-write,
you can find out when these files were last accessed by using "ls -lu"
or "find directory_name -atime -some_number_of_days -type f -print".
(If they haven't been accessed, you could decide that they aren't
needed.)

Hi Steve,

I havn't done it with NT but since I've got samba working only 2 days ago I
remember seeing some parameters which should be enabled to authenticate on a
NT box. Check out the smb.conf. It's in the part where you can enable the
smbpassw file.

Hope it helps.

You might want to try reading the Linux FAQ, as this is dealt
with in that fine document. However, I'll give the quick explanation
here.

BogoMips is short for "Bogus MIPS". MIPS, in turn, is short for
either Millions of Instructions Per Second or Meaningless Indicator of
Processor Speed. BogoMips are a fake indicator of processor speed. In
short, don't loose a lot of sleep over it.

Again, consult the FAQ for more information.

Thanks!
