I managed to configure the ESS688 sound card on my Toshiba
410CDT (or so i'd like to think)
now i have two problems
1. it plays .wav files but when i start the cd player under kde,
nothing, zilch, nada.... it shows the track, starts the counter
as if it was playing the cd but there's no sound.
2. now i've shutdown kde and come back to the shell... there's a
shrill whistle like sound coming out of the speaker till i
reboot the machine.
what am i doing wrong??
thanks for ur help.

This makes no sense at all -- why would LILO (present in the MBR)
take more space than LOADLIN (present in the FAT partition, along
with a copy of the kernel)?

RPM may be GPL, but many programs in RPM are not. There are enough custom
changes to stop them from running in non-RH systems. RH extensions are
spread all over in different libraries. Why else can they charge $150 for
supports of RH locked-in systems?

You can just copy them from Window font directories. I read somewhere that
the fonts are copyrighted. So you can't legally use them in non-Window
systems. I am still waiting for my personal letter from M$ legal department.

try
fuser /cdrom --- or mountpoint whatever it is - this will
identify the process using the mount easily and allow you

OK, it's been a while since I've done this (on DSL now). 'setserial
/dev/ttyS0 speed_vhi' for starters (see man page). Also use the '115200'
speed option for pppd:
/usr/sbin/pppd lock modem /dev/$DEVICE 115200
or in options file or whereever/however. This should be twice the speed
of your modem. So if 28.8, use 57600 instead. Assuming your modem
handles compression in hardware (it should), turn off all forms of
compression, just in case the negotiation is somehow munging this:
novj novjccomp nodeflate nopcomp nobsdcomp noaccomp
If still slow, you will probably have to dig into the modem init string.
If you are by chance using the same one that you used with windows, and
it is long and convoluted, you might just try a simple 'ATDT' instead.
There probably are other suggestions that I just am not remembering ATM.
Not related to linux vs Other OS, but if using a surge suppressor on
phone line, try it without that.

Well, maybe you can help me some more.
I started a telnet session to the machine where I added the drives. logged
in as root and ran the command:
[root@mi5 /root]# mke2fs -cv /dev/sdc1
mke2fs 1.15, 18-Jul-1999 for EXT2 FS 0.5b, 95/08/09
Filesystem label=
OS type: Linux
Block size=4096 (log=2)
Fragment size=4096 (log=2)
89088 inodes, 178172 blocks
8908 blocks (5.00%) reserved for the super user
First data block=0
6 block groups
32768 blocks per group, 32768 fragments per group
14848 inodes per group
Superblock backups stored on blocks:
32768, 98304, 163840
Running command: badblocks -b 4096 -s /dev/sdc1 178172
Checking for bad blocks (read-only test): 148096/ 178172
at block 148096 the telnet session locks. I went over to the server and
checked the monitor and saw the following error:
"
aha1542.c: Trying device reset for target 3
Sent BUS reset to scsi host 0
Kernel panic: scsi_free: Trying to free unused memory
"
Any info yet again would greatly be apreciated ;)
thx
PS: Same problem on both drives. Never used them so it could be bad blocks
on both but i doubt it.

The problem is too much space, not too little. Linux resides past the
1024th cylinder on my 20 gig hard drive, so the version of LILO that I have
will not boot it. Rather than create a small /boot partition at the
beginning of the drive, I decided it would be far easier just to use
loadlin for the time being. I am not exactly sure how to install a
partition at the beginning of a drive, since it was my understanding that
fips does it at the end.

Thanks for the response. I tried what you wrote (which was the same as
what I had except with carriage returns between commands) and it still
boots into windows when I choose linux. Could something be awry in another

Thanks for the idea - I tried changing linux -> Linux and it still booted
into windows when choosing Linux, although this time I got an error message
from command.com regarding goto Linux not being found.
Also, not sure what you mean about the com_2_play. (bear with me, I'm new)

As I said in my previous message, I don't think the messages identifying
the e-mail as spam originate with BA. The only line in which the word
"spam" appears in the example you posted matches EXACTLY a string found
in the Fetchmail binary. That says to me that Fetchmail has
(mis-)identified the message as spam, probably because Sendmail has
bounced it. Perhaps Sendmail thinks it's spam, or perhaps Sendmail has
bounced the message for some unrelated reason, but the refusal code
matches one that Fetchmail associates with spam.
Also, do you really think BA is monitoring your e-mail closely enough to
notice a bounced message (that bounces back to you) with one line
claiming it's spam? I think they've got better things to do. They'd be
more likely to notice if you managed to set up a mail loop that
overloaded their mail system -- but you've presented no evidence that
you've got a mail loop on your hands. Even if you did, it'd only result
in one e-mail to BA per Fetchmail call, which is probably a long enough
cycle time that you'd notice it before it'd do anybody else any real
harm.

This sounds reasonable to me, except I don't think step 7 loops it back
to #1, which implies an endless loop. From what I've seen, it looks
like steps #1-6 above, and then:
7) Fetchmail picks up mail from the POP3 account at david-steuber com,
including BA's bounce message.
8) Fetchmail injects the BA bounce message into the local mail queue.
9) You read the bounce message and try to keep your head from exploding
following the convoluted chain of events in the headers.

I don't think the problem is the To: address on the incoming mail; I
think it's something else in the headers, or possibly the format of the
mail. For instance, some MTAs can get picky about carriage returns
(although I don't believe Sendmail is one of them). You might also be
running into trouble with Fetchmail's rewrite rules. According to
Fetchmail's manpage, it rewrites headers in some situations. It might
be rewriting these headers in such a way that Sendmail gets confused
and bounces the message. The rewriting might even make tracing the
problem more difficult. (Search for "norewrite" in the Fetchmail
manpage for more details.)
As to sendmail.cf, don't even try to edit it. I'm foggy on the details,
but most systems use some other configuration files that can be compiled
into the sendmail.cf file. These other files are supposedly much easier
to handle. Personally, I got fed up with Sendmail before learning much
about these, and switched to Qmail and then Postfix, which I now use.
> There should be no way for
> someone to force fetchmail into being an open relay for uce.
This shouldn't be an issue. Offhand, I can't think of a way for an
outsider to hijack a Fetchmail setup for use as a spam relay -- at
least, not without seriously compromising your system, or unless you use
Fetchmail to forward mail off of your system to one controlled or
compromised by the spammer. There are easier ways to send spam. If
somebody can think of a way to abuse Fetchmail to send spam, I'd like to
know how to prevent it.

This employment offer that you present lacks credibility.
A few reasons for this opinion are:
You use of the term "peecee" for the common computer term "PC" (Personal
Computer) this may be the result of lack of experince in the computer field,
OR you are attempting to present yourself as different persona then your
true identity.
There is a Hollywood, Florida near Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, your wording of
the locations makes it seem as though you are trying to appear less familiar
with the area than you in fact may be.
Then there is the ISP factor. Someone with a less than critical eye may
read your offer and think that you are located in Florida. However, I
believe you are located in the New York state in or near New York City.
Your email address is from Netmonger Communications, which is a small ISP
based in Bellmore NewYork. Netmonger Communications is so small or starved
for resources that it not able to provide a second authortive DNS server on
its own hosts. It's second authoritive DNS server is a DNS server run on a
host of Telecon Communications/Superior Net. Telecon Communications/Superior
Net is another ISP based in New York, in this case Johnstown New York.
However, you didn't connect to the internet through either of those ISP's.
Your connection was established through a third ISP located in New York
City, by the name of PANIX Public Access Networks Corporation. This ISP has
local dialup numbers for New York City, some other areas in New York outside
of New York City, and some area of New Jersey as well.
Your offer specifies Debian for your Linux distribution, you have
crossposted your offer into three Linux newsgroups but into none of the
debian specific newsgroups. Also since you are seeking professional and/or
expert support, there are newsgroups where you can advertise for the
services of computer consultants, you also did not crosspost into those
newsgroups either.
There is one more thing that can cause someone to doubt your offer's
credibility. This offer of yours is the only usenet newsgroup posting you
have made to date with this identity. This makes it appear that you may
have just created this on-line identity of [EMAIL PROTECTED] for the purpose
to make this one offer, perhaps for some ulterior motive.
These are some of the reasons that I find your offer to not be credible.

And it causes a parse error :-(. Even if I use fetchmailconf to set
this, I get a parse error. It is like the man page and fetchmailconf
are ahead of fetchmail!
