A denial of service attack is no test of security. What you really
want to do is try and get a root shell on the box.

I am making the assumption that this is a legitimate question, and not
an attempt to learn how to be a cracker.

BTW, there are port scanners for finding deamons running on a
machine. If you look through the source code for popular deamons,
look for programs that do reads with gets() and other functions that
don't specify a maximum number of bytes to read. These are bugs in
the source code, and the maintainers need to be notified of such
occurances.

If you do a web search, you should be able to find system cracking
tools. With any luck, none of them will work against Linux.

I don't want to give out the address of the one guy at Logitech that I
do know about. He isn't in the video group anyway and he is trying to
get the video group to change their mind. I don't want to upset him
by having people flood his mailbox.

Logitech has a way of contacting them via their website. I don't know
why they don't provide an e-mail contact. It is a bit of a pain to
use the website. I did and got a response a few days later saying
that Linux was not supported.

You might want to look at these URLs. We are not alone.

A problem that I had was somewhat different, but may be this will help.

In the redhat 5.2 installation, only root has /usr/sbin in the
PATH pre-setup, other users don't. This is different from 4.2,
where I did not have such a problem. ppp-on-dialer uses chat, which
of course is located in /usr/sbin, so ppp-on could not find chat.
When I looked at the log, the only thing it said was that script
failed,
nothing else. So, I just changed chat -v to /usr/sbin/chat -v and
it works fine now.

I acquired hpfs-1.92b, but have had no luck in compiling
it as a module for the 2.0.36 kernel. The biggest showstopper
is lack of the neccessary 'dentry' structure in any of the
2.0.36 header files. I acquired a 2.1 dcache.h, but its
'dentry' is not correct for HPFS. If anyone has been
successful in enabling R/W for 2.0.36 please post. Thanks.

Hi:

Is there any way to pipe input to the STDIN of an already running process?
(Assuming it's a background process.) Is there a command-line way to do
this (without having to write code)?

04 = "sector not found". This usually indicates a geometry mismatch.

Did you change your hard disk geometry in the BIOS? That wouldn't be
     nice indeed.

If you have a rescue linux system available;

   - boot from there
   - call fdisk to examine the partition table
   - e2fsck your root partition (the fs seems to be damaged since your
box comes up with it mounted readonly). Do likewise for your other
linux partitions (oh, I see, you did already with success. Good).
   - if all goes well, mount your root partition (on /mnt, say) and
reinstall LILO. For this, you should chroot into this partition,
which can be done in several ways, e.g.:

            cd /mnt
            chroot .
            lilo
Ctrl-D # exit the chroot shell

      or

lilo -r /mnt # thus, lilo does the chroot itself

The rescue system I know about best is available from

    ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/SuSE-Linux/6.0/disks/{eide01,rescue}

(two image files for floppies). The installation floppy also allows
you to boot into your existing Linux on disk, just by indicating
the root partition. If it works, re-installing LILO is straight-
forward, of course.

Well, Operasoftware has been trying for about a
year to get a X11 version, but at least 2 teams
have been unable to. Earlier this week, Helmar,
the marketing guru at Opera posted this note in
one of the companies newsgroups....we shall see
if it brings us Opera. Doug

Helmar stated..

Current status:

[ . . . . | . . . . | . . . . | . . . . ]

Well, the indicator doesn't look too cool, does it? ;-) BUT, the good
news is that we are about to sign a company that will take care of the
UN*X platform, and that includes Linux, Solaris and all other relevant
UNIX derivatives.

We expect to move that little pointer thing to the right rather
rapidly soon, so you just hang ten until we have more news right from
the horse's mouth.

Not quite. You can run multiple VNC's from a UNIX or OS/2 box and
have different vncviewer users looking at and using each one of them.
(each with different environments and apps, and their own keyboard and mouse
control)

The reason you can't run multiple VNC's on a Windows 95 box is that it
is only single user anyway. And even with Citrix on NT you may have
multi-processing, but unless your applications take that into account
you are still screwed. Example is the "Fast-Finder" part of Office95-7
every time a user starts up an Office application the Fast-Finder builds
an index of files on your system, and overwrites the same file that the
last users "Fast-Finder" created...

What Netscape is this. Mine seems to look and act indentical to windows.
There is 1 difference, no 2. It runs faster and doesn't crash.

What about having a seperator of non-interfering material that keeps your
hand 5cm away from the plate? I don't know precicely how these things work,
or even what they are, (from the context of the conversation it sounds neat
though)
but seems that you could have a layer of plastic between
you and the plate?

Also, what if you then coated the top of the seperator with a soft spongy
shape memory foam like
those disposable earplugs?

I haven't tried it. If I record to a CD-RW how am I going to erase it? I
didn't see anything about CD-RW's in the docs. If you can erase then can
you delete 1 file at a time say like a diskette? I can do this on
windows with direct cd.

Yeah I know that, but what if I don't want to erase the whole disk say a
couple of files? It can be done with direct cd on windows and works like
a big floppy disk can something like this be done in linux, if not I
will just stick with burning CD-R's since they are so cheap.

Is there any inexpensive way to connect a DAT to Linux
using a digital cable? So that I can record digitally
without using an analog conversion.

Has anyone set up a Windows-Linux Java RMI? I am trying to use Java
RMI on a small network between Windows and Linux (Redhat) using
java116_v5 on the Linux box. While both machines will allow the
connection of a client to the server method on themselves, between the
Windows 95 machine and the Linux machine I have had no success? If
anyone can throw some light on this situation I would greatly
appreciate it.

Subject: kernel too big?
Date: Sat, 06 Feb 1999 01:13:49 GMT

Hi, i just got my hands on 2.2.1 and tried compiling it, it compiled ok but
it was huge! I really didn't think i had selected that much but anyway i
tried using zlilo and lilo apparently agrrees with me in that it is really
big, but lilo doesn't seem to use it... i try using it anyway and my box
boots up ok but it boots up with all the things that were in the old kernel!
and nothing from what was in the new kernel! the kicker is that i moved my
old kernel and it seems to still be using it... i am quite confused. i have
tried compiling it with *everything* i could as mods but it is still > 1megs!
i have used bzImage but that doest seem to be of much help. any help would
be greatly appricated here!

Right. Tried that, but still no joy - pilot-xfer still reports:
Unable to bind to port '/dev/pilot'.
It has been recompiled with 2.2.0 headers

The telnetd will try to do a reverse DNS lookup. If your local machines
are only listed in /etc/hosts, then a DNS lookup will logically fail, and
a warning message will be logged. There is no other solution than running
a local DNS for your internal network range.
