You probably chose a custom or expert install. Just choose cancel
and continue.

But first get the anaconda installer updates as someone else
recommended.

What you probably did was setting $PATH to something nasty (or even
illegal, so to speak). Figure out where emacs lives (from a user
account, type "which emacs") and open the '.bashrc' file and correct the
error. If you're lucky, you may even have a backup of the old file saved
as '.bashrc~' (you should look at this one first, "/bin/cat .bashrc~",
before saving the new '.bashrc' (which will overwrite the backup)).

For looking at jpeg files, you might want to see if you can
find seejpeg or zgv.

If you like elm, you might want to try mutt. It's quite

I'm having some problems with X not starting up correctly. When I boot
up, everything goes fine until Linux tries to start up X. I get the
gray colored screen, with the X cursor, and then usually the screen
would flash and I'd get a gui login. However, at this point now it
just sits there, and doesn't do a thing...I didn't let it sit for very
long, so that might be the problem.

I recently compiled kernel 2.2.14, upgrading from 2.2.5-15 (Red Hat
6). That was two days ago, I haven't had any problems up until now.

Any ideas what the problem may be, and how I could fix it?

Thanks in advance,
Andy

He said nameserver, as in "server assigned dns" in Windows. You're
talking about regular dynamic IP's. Different stuff.

Some older releases of the USR terminal server firmware didn't do DNS
assignment correctly, even for Windows clients. On the other hand, some
of the newer releases don't support RADIUS menus any longer. So, it is a
dilemma.

For ordinary Windows 95-type filesystems, mount as type vfat rather than
fat, msdos, or umsdos. vfat support must be compiled into your kernel or
available as a module; see the "Filesystems" section in the kernel
configuration.

For CD-ROMs, make sure that you've enabled Microsoft Joliet extensions
in the same section of the kernel configuration (and recompiled and
reinstalled the kernel if necessary).

It's almost right at the top of the iso9660 section in 'man mount' ...

Try 'check=relaxed'. As the man page notes, this is probably only
meaningful together with 'norock' and 'map=normal', but the latter is
the default and if this is an old Windows CD then Rock Ridge extensions
probably aren't available anyway.

Make sure your kernel is compiled with "APM support" and "Power off on
shutdown" enabled. Also, make sure that /sbin/init.d/halt
(/etc/rc.d/init.d/halt on RH and derived) contains the command "halt
-p".

If that doesn't help, just push the power button on the machine manually.
(the simplest solution!)

Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 18:19:35 +0000

Hi there.
                I am programming scientific applications for which I
need very sharp time stamping functions. First I used GETTIMEOFDAY which
return time stamp information precise to the micro second. But the since
our programs did not behave in time as we expected, we suspected that
system execution time might have something to do with the time
discrepancies of our program. Therefore, we wanted to use usertime time
stamps only. Therefore, we switched to TIMES.

Our system is set up on RedHat 5.2. And with the simple test:

#include <sys/times.h>
#include <stdio.h>
void main(void)
{
    struct tms buffer[1];
    clock_t res;

    res = times(buffer);
    printf("res = %ld\n", res);
    printf("tms_utime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_utime);
    printf("tms_stime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_stime);
    printf("tms_cutime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_cutime);
    printf("tms_cstime=%ld\n\n", buffer->tms_cstime);

    sleep(1);  //sleep for 1 second

    res = times(buffer);
    printf("res = %ld\n", res);
    printf("tms_utime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_utime);
    printf("tms_stime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_stime);
    printf("tms_cutime=%ld\n", buffer->tms_cutime);
    printf("tms_cstime=%ld\n\n", buffer->tms_cstime);
}

we get the execution:

res = 78324562
tms_utime=0
tms_stime=0
tms_cutime=0
tms_cstime=0

res = 78324663
tms_utime=0
tms_stime=0
tms_cutime=0
tms_cstime=0

which shows that TIMES doesn't work (it does not fill the TMS
strcuture).

Does anybody knows what is the problem? Or does anybody knows other
useful timestamp functions (preferably usertime only)?

thanks

Subject: Getting Segmentation Faults on this program
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 18:33:39 GMT

Hello everyone,

The program is
ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/software/linux/choicenet_1.0.2_Linux_1.2.tar.Z
or
ftp://ftp.livingston.com/pub/le/software/linux/choicenet_1.0.2_Linux_2.0.tar.Z

it's *supposed* to allow you to run a kiddy-safe net using built in features
on Livingston Portmasters, except, the darn thing wont even run. I've tried as
many tricks as *I* know, but, to no avail.

Doing a strace on filterd, or any of the binaries in this tarball, shows it
dying off on a getpid(), this holds true for all the binaries, the getpid() is
after about 6 mprotect(); which, after reading the manpage, says that it'll
die with a SIGSEGV, which is what I'm getting.

an ltrace gives me this:
atexit(0x400106dc)                                = 0
atexit(0x4008ff50)                                = 0
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++

which I don't *really* understand.

running gdb on filterd gives me a buncha errors about no debugging symbols, I
expected that, and this little tidbit:

0x40159724 in getopt_long_only () from /lib/libc.so.6

just after gdb reports it as giving a SIGSEGV.

The documentation notes that this program is meant for 2.0.30, and since I
don't have access to that kernel, nor can my current compiler deal with trying
to compile it, thus, I'm left hoping that someone can put me on the right
track here.

I would appreciate any help at all, thank you.

If what ends up in the directory I downloaded to is still
a single file with the suffix .tar, then it did not do this, right?
I seem to remember some maddening past behavior from netscape
that involved not letting one choose the directory
to download to and then unzipping the file on the desktop.
But one knows when that has happened because one watches
in horror as the stupid thing scatters files all over the desktop.
Fortunately netscape has not been doing this to me lately. It seems
to let me download to a directory of my choosing and then
unzip the file myself. And I have also unsuccessfully tried getting around
naming conventions by changing a name to, say, "fred.tar."
And the files that originally did not work had names
that windows can deal with anyway. One was "ch8_tar.tar".
Even DOS can deal with this, right? 6 alphanumerics
and an underscore, that's less than 8 characters before the dot,
and only one dot before a three-letter extension. Also,
FTP works fine; the problem is with HTTP downloads.
And I don't think this was a problem before.

Ok, use some program that dumps the file (or part of the file) as
hexadecimal and ASCII. Try to figure out if the file is made up from
constant sized chunks or if each record is preceeded with some size
information. Do you know how many records there ought to be in each
entry? Or was that a dumb question? (I don't know a thing about that
format).

Create a small sample file using ReferenceManager in which you put known
values. Examine this file.

If the file format is not using fixed sized records (and maybe even
compression), then I would say that it's next to impossible to reverse
engineer it. Well, not impossible, but unhealthy.

I still think the easiest way would be to contact the makers of
ReferenceManager unless you find some other program or description on
the web.

I have just installed Mandrake Linux 6.5 on my PC, which came with 17 in
monitor (Acer G772, 0.25dpi) capable of running true color(32bit) at
1280x1024 under windows environment. My computer also has a 16mb AGP
video card. But during the installation, the x-configurator
automatically probed the monitor and determine that the monitor can only
work at 8bit and 600x480 display size. The icons are so big that it make
me feel like I am 70 years old with vision disability.

So how can I change this setting after installation? Especially is there
a way to do so in the x-environment (KDE, GNOME)?

Any help is very much appreciated.

It's independent after being installed, but the installer runs only on
linux. I'm not certain if it runs on other unixes or not.

It's a list of physical sectors for the loader to load. This method is
used because the loader is too small to know the details of several
different file systems. For example, it can load the linux kernel from
an msdos file system.

> 3) what happens exactly (step by step) when the system boots up?

(1) The bios loads the first sector of the first hard drive and executes
whatever it finds there.
(2) If that code happens to be lilo's first stage, it loads 6 or 7
sectors that are mapped by a little 'map' that is contained within the
loader. After printing "LI" it jumps to whatever it loaded.
(3) If those 6 or 7 sectors of loaded code happen to be the image of the
file /boot/boot.b, then it finishes printing "LILO" and does the tasks
that the installer, /sbin/lilo, has set it to do.

Remember that lilo serves as both a boot manager and a boot loader. As
a loader, lilo can be invoked by other boot managers, and as a manager
it can invoke other loaders.

The map file, /boot/map only pertains to the linux-loader portion of
lilo; when lilo executes other loaders, it's the resposibility of those
loaders to know how to boot their respective operating systems.

Subject: Making mouse cursors invisible
Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2000 12:41:12 -0600

Hi,

I'm developing a kiosk system using Redhat 6.1. It is a touch screen
driven app that plays mpeg video files in fullscreen mode using mtvp. I
really want the mouse cursor to go away! These machines aren't going to
have mice attached to them anyway. I discovered that if I copy the nil2
font file over the cursor font file (in usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc) that the
cursor becomes a tiny little dot which is close enough to invisible to
suit me. However, mtvp is getting a cursor from somewhere else and
putting it right in the center of the screen every time a video starts.
Any ideas on where it's coming from and how to get rid of it?

Thanks in advance,

Jay
