Subject: Kernel 2.2.5 question
Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 23:50:36 -0700
I have upgraded to kernel 2.2.5 from 2.0.36. I had to make bzImage
because zImage was apparently too large. Here is what I got when
attempting to make zImage:
Root device is (3, 8)
Boot sector 512 bytes
Setup is 3436 bytes.
System is 559 kB
System is too big. Try using bzImage or modules.
make[1]: *** [zImage] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot'
make: *** [zImage] Error 2
What is it that keeps causing this, do I have too many drivers
configured in config? Is there any way that I can get zImage to compile?
Or do I have to resort to using bzImage? If I have to stay with bzImage,
how do I add the module(s) for my sound card?
Other than this, 2.2.5 seems to be working like a charm. Any help
would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Eric

Reply-To: Faheem Mitha <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Dear Linux people,
I posted this recently to the comp.emacs and comp.emacs.xemacs and no on
ewas able to help me. I may try there again, but since this is more an
installation problem I think it might be worth asking on a more general
topic group. Hope this is OK.
Sincerely, Faheem Mitha.
****************************************************************
I downloaded the Xemacs-20.4.tar.gz and compiled it in a subdirectory of
my home directory, since I presently do not have enough space in my system
directories. I ran ./configure and make. Then I ran make install, having
changed the default usr/local to be the same subdirectory xemacs-20.4/,
that contained all the other xemacs stuff. I also ran make dist for good
measure, though I am not sure if that was necessary. Everything seemed to
compile OK, and Xemacs runs, but it complains that it cannot find the info
directory, though it is there.
This is a problem I have had with GNU Emacs as well, which came as part of
my system (Linux Redhat 5.1) as an RPM. GNU Emacs also complains that it
"cannot find info node". Can anyone tell me what the possible causes of
this problem and how I might be able to fix it? I have no idea how
Emacs/Xemacs locates info, and have experimented without success. Note
that I can start up info outside Emacs with no problem.
Please send an e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] if possible. Thanks.
Faheem Mitha.

Mark,
KPPP that comes with KDE is purely graphical. It alos states what your
dynamic IP address is when logged into your ISP, the transfer rate and the
amount of bytes transmitted.
Hope that helps.

Maybe you placed the 'ext2 filesystem' into a module, so it can't
mount the /root partition...
Select ext2 fs as a built-in-kernel filesystem, and _not_ az a module.

I just built the 2.2.3 kernel with the make bzImage command on an
S.u.S.E. 6.0 system. It created a file called bzImage in the
/usr/src/linux/arch/i386 directory that was about the size of what it
said the kernel was when the compiler finished. I copied this file to
/boot and renamed it to vmlinuz and added it to lilo. Now on boot LILO
starts and starts loading the kernel, but freezes while uncomressing the
kernel. I've built a lots of kernels without bzImage and used modules
but there was some stuff that I wanted in this kernel that made it big.

I've already put the word "ramdisk=8192" in /etc/lilo.conf and when I
try to create a ext2 filesystem > 4M on /dev/ram, mke2fs complains
"filesystem larger than apparent filesystem". And later if I copy files
larger than 4M, I found I/O errors logs of /dev/ram in
/var/log/messages.
How can create a ramdisk and make a ext2 filesystem on it?

No, it shouldn't. If you create the file mbox in your home directory
then pine and/or ipop3d will pull the entire mailbox from /var/spool/mail
into ~/mbox and then the shell won't tell you you have mail. As soon
as you get new mail into /var/spool/mail/yourmailbox then shell will be
able to see it and notify you. Next time pine or ipop3d is run then the
mailbox in /var/spool/mail is emtied and the messages appended to ~/mbox.
See if his works for you.

Under top, the LIB column is usually 0, but with this particular
application I'm running it's non-zero. This non-zero value seems to be
linked to a drastic slowdown in the speed of the program.
I looked in top's man page, and the description it has for this field is
"Size of use library pages." What does this mean? I've searched
everywhere, and can't seem to figure it out.

simply type "enlightenment" in any terminal window, while you're running

You do not have to use any script, just Save As your Excel table
