Just a thought, you have un-tar'ed the file prior to trying the
compile??? What's the error you get when you run './configure'?

Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 20:52:36 +0200

I'm new to linux, and one of the first steps I'm trying to take in my
transition phase (from win98, or course) is get a good MP3 player :o) I've
been trying to install X11Amp for 3 days in vain.

The problem lies in when, in the readme file, it says to install glib 1.2
and gtk 1.2 . After several attempts I managed to install glib/gtk and their
respective 'devel' through rpm. But when I try to install X11Amp, it goes
fine until something like this is printed:

GLIB - version >= 1.2.1... yes
GTK - version >= 1.2.1...no

I tried re-compiling gtk from the tar.gz files, but I'm stuck at ./configure
where after checking the GLIB version, it says something like "X....no" then
dies :))

Anyway to get thru this? I can't live without MP3!!!!

Hmm ... Do TurboLinux and Slackware not ship with KDE? I haven't seen
Slack in quite a while, and haven't seen TL at all. RH, Caldera, and
(IIRC) Debian and SuSE ship w/kde, as well as the Corel machines.

It's a nice idea, and it had occurred to me for serious use. Whilst I could
probably fit my "essential" stuff (which I wouldn't want to lose) onto a
reasonable number of floppies, that still leaves a lot of stuff I'd like to
keep, or *not* like to have to reinstall and configure again.

It's to do with Quantum Mechanics, or something like that... the drive
doesn't exist until you buy it. Or am I thinking of philosophy? ;-)
What I really meant was a drive already (correctly) installed, probably the
boot one, as opposed to a new one bought specially for the purpose.

>Installing on a second hard drive is the same as

Except that the shiny new second hard drive doesn't contain your essential
computer data in this case.

I realise that, but in absolute terms, a smaller drive would still do what I
needed just as well, and be cheaper.
This all comes down to the fact that they don't sell EIDE drives any smaller
than 3.2Gb- and if I was going to buy a drive that "big" (it's all relative
really), which I'd have to if it was to be new, I'd go for something between
6 and 8Gb, as the difference in price is small.

I still think that'll be the one to go for- if nothing else, it'll give me
some space to play around with.

Yep... this is my whole problem.. "risked the whole installation". I know

Get a newer kernel. Only 2.1.x and 2.2.x support the NTFS ( read - only )
However I wouldnt recommend 2.2.x because its too unstable right now.

You can make your own dialing script / use wvdial or use the RH tool.
Unfortunatly i dont use RH and i dont know exactly what its like. I use
pppconfig to make script file and pon Whatever_the_script_file_is to
connect. Try looking for that tool on the net its a really nice tool. And
check whether your modem is Winmodem or not.. Winmodems dont work under
Linix = (. You might have hard time if your modem is PnP since PnP isnt
that well supported in Linux. *at least i had really HARD time going around

#redhat ..

Maybe your other user accounts dont have complete access to all the

Try passing the option "mem=128M" to the kernel at boot. For some reason I can't
remember "mem=127M" is sometimes requires.

BTW: The 1.0.x kernel is /extremely/ old. You should definitely upgrade it.

You need to set your host and domain names.

I don't have a copy of Red Hat here for reference, but try looking in
/etc/hostname. The init scripts should run `hostname --file /etc/hostname` (or
whatever) to set the hostname.

You can just make up a hostname for local use.
