Hi,
Steer away from motherboards with SiS onboard video. In my experience
they are next to impossible to configure for xwindows setup.
Apart from that I find linux is working ok om a K6-2-3D 350 Mhz chip
with 128 Mb RAM and an IBM 10.2 Gb drive.

Man pages are your friend - but I agree, it's often tricky to guess what
you have to "man" in the first place. This is where apropos is useful.
For example, typing "apropos dir" will list all the man pages which have
"dir" in their subject.
I once considered doing a DOS<->Unix translation table, but never got
round to it... I'm sure if you come up with a list of DOS commands you
want on Unix, someone here would be happy to translate them for you where
possible.

Well, you can try using shift and pgup/pgdn to scroll the console or
xterm around to see more, or type
ls | less
to bring it up in a scrollable viewer.

Use fetchmail. Create a .fetchmailrc file in your /root directory
containing the lines to pull down everything in the [EMAIL PROTECTED]
mailbox and feed it to procmail.
for example:
set daemon 60
poll mail.domain.com
protocol pop3
user mbox there is root here
password <whatever it is>
mda "formail -s procmail"
This tells fetchmail to check the mailbox every 60 seconds and pass it
on to procmail to be sorted. (You said you already have the recipes
right)

Subject: X Windows question. Some windows outside the screen.
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 00:09:06 -0400
Hi everybody,
I set up my X WIndows and I'm using tvm as the window manager. It works fine
except I think there is something wrong with the way Linux recognizes the
resolution of my monitor. First I had a virtual desktop setting in
XF86Config. It was really annoying. I got rid off the setting, but the
problem I have been having is that some programs place parts of their
windows outside the boundaries of my display (as if they thought I have a
800x600 instead of 640x480 monitor ). Especially Netscape. Even if I
specify a geometry, it does not affect other windows that Netscape creates.
It's impossible to resize them afterwards too. So, my
question is, can I do something about it? I know that tvm has a variable
called MaxWindowSize or something like that, but for the life of me I can't
figure out the syntax. The man page was really vague about it. It just said
"MaxWindowSize string"
Does anyone know the right format of that variable? I can probably specify
something in .Xdefaults for Netscape too, but I don't know what. So, if
anybody has any ideas on how to solve the problem, I would appreciate it.
P.S. By the way, Netscape takes so much memory that it's not funny. Explorer
is much more resource efficient.
Cheers,
Sergei

]Me too please. I have been particular unsuccessful setting up, and I
]haveen;t gotten any response to my inquiries.
Step 1
Get and install mgetty.
Step 2
Configure mgetty
Decide if you want login authentication (user logs on and runs pppd after he has
logged
on) or pap/chap (set up the AutoPPP in /etc/mgetty*/login.config)
Step 3
put the line
S0:2345:respawn:/usr/local/sbin/mgetty ttyS0
into /etc/inittab
(changing S0 and ttyS0 to whatever the port is that your modem is on)
To get voluminous debugging, put -x 8 after mgetty, and change the lines debug 4 (or
debug 3) in /etc/
/etc/mgett*/mgetty.conf to debug 8. Then look in /var/log/mgetty.ttyS?
Step 3
Dial in and enjoy
(Of course step 2 can take a bit longer, but here is not the place to write a 10 page
essay on how to set
up mgetty.)

You don't need to install glibc2 (libc6) to upgrade to 2.2.x. The kernel
itself doesn't use the C library (how could it?).
I suggest you use egcs-1.1.2 instead - egcs is now the "official" gcc.

I'm probably in the wrong group, so feel free to redirect me ...
I have Redhat linux, so I'm using gnu make. I have a rule:
x y z : file1.o file2.o [email protected]
$(LINKER) -o [email protected] file1.o file2.o [email protected]
Trying to "make x" gives an error msg that "[email protected]" could not be found.
This same makefile worked fine on solaris & such.

Problem with USR Sportster internal ISDN T/A.
No other problems since October on two K6-2 300's on MSI motherboards.
One is a server and the other a workstation.
The server was crossgraded to Celleron 333 in order to get ISDN to work.
Some games don't run too well

But everything you add brings potential bugs, exploitable or merely
annoying, never mind the general clutter. A policy of not installing
anything you don't need and use goes a long way towards a reliable and
easy to maintain system.
To that end, finer granularity in of the basic FreeBSD core would be
nice. The flip side is managing complex dependencies between the
pieces. You simply don't have to worry about it when the main OS
core is a monolithic distribution. I don't care how good the
packaging system is, botched dependencies will always bite you at
some point.

The problem is the BIOS, which can only boot from a partition which
resides in the first 1024 cylinders. So put your system root "/"
partition here.
By enabling LBA in the bios, the actual disk geometry is translated so
the disk APPEARS to have less cylinders so more is available for the
root partition.
I don't know whether there is now any way round the 1024 limitation,
but put the root pattion at the front of the disk...
This always works for me anyway...

More likely that you haven't set up ipchains correctly on the gateway
machine. Also, with many (most?) IRC servers, they want an ident daemon
running on the system that is connecting: if you're masquerading, you'll
need to fake that so that the remote server is happy.

I posted this to the gnome-list earlier this week but never got a reply.
Maybe someone here can help me. When trying to patch my mc-4.5.30 source

Now, no matter what source I have tried patching, I always get this
error. So I just remove the offending line, and the relevant source patches
fine. However, removing the line in this file produced the following error:

know why the source wouldn't patch? I've never had this problem patching the
