Also let me plug my PStill converter - usually 'dvips -> [PS] ->
pstill -> [PDF]' works quite well. PStill/Linux is free for private

fonts for PS creation for best results.

. . . I'm stuck in single user mode, and when I attempt to use passwd I
get the message:

I guess a did not realize that you could set up the printers to

a) Your modems have disconnected due to line noise or whatever.
b) One of the modems in the chain has xon-xoff set as flow control, and
you have sent it an xoff without escaping it.
Put
asyncmap x0000
into /etc/ppp/options. Also check the modem init string to make sure you
are setting up the modem for crtscts flow control.

If you follow the info at Wayne Rattz's site you should be able to
install. Then the easiest way to get full ata66 support(providing
you have the interface ribbon cable) is to compile and install a
newer kernel with pd* drivers enabled(the Promise drivers.)
I've used 2.3.4 kernel for a few weeks with no problems. Newer
kernels may work too but this is the only one I can speak about
from direct experience. After enabling the Promise drivers with
make xconfig and compiling the 2.3.4 kernel I got 16 MB/sec
buffered reads reported by hdparm and about 21 MB/sec
benchmark in bonnie(as opposed to about 6.7 MB/sec in
bonnie just using PIO to access the same drive.)
It's fun when you get it working because you can tell there's
a disconnect between the CPU and the hard drive. Once
you get the UDMA to kick in you can tell the difference
doing things like the find command.
Enjoy. :)

Yeah, the Workplace Shell used SOM, I believe, and with CORBA
and COM/DCOM having displaced it, I believe IBM has cast the
SOM/DSOM adrift. Last time I looked at their web site they were
giving away the SOM/DSOM tools with no support.

Hmm, I'd prefer spending ten minutes on reading an inadequate manpage to
buying a *good* Linux book (which certainly takes a huge time to read and
a huge amount of money). Anyways, the "inadequate" manpage is sufficient to
squeeze some minimal info out of it: the original question was how to untar a
simple archive, which is covered by the document. BTW, some people call it
"inadequacy", other's call it "reduced to the basic, ie. frequently needed and
useful options", and it's RTFM and not FTRM (f*** the ridicolous manual) :-)

Quite often /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow are readonly for safety; when
saving in vi, type :w! to override.
This all assumes that the root partition is mounted read-write, if
not, type:
mount -o rw,remount /
to fix (make sure you unmount it afterwards).

Hi, I've obtained an Amiga hard disk which I'm trying to read on my PC. I
have Suse Linux which I've recompiled to include Amiga FFS support, but
I'm having trouble reading it. I have the disk attached as slave and
tried:
mount /dev/hdb -t affs /mnt/amiga
and got the message: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on
/dev/hdb, or too many mounted filesystems
If I try /dev/hdb1 I get the same message, followed by: (aren't you trying
to mount an extended partition, instead of some logical partition inside?)
Are these commands right? Should I be using something other than affs? If
I run fdisk, it shows the drive as not having any partitions - is this
normal? I don't know whether the partition table is stored the same or not
on different platforms?
It could be that the disk is actually unreadable, but I just want to make
sure I'm doing the right thing before giving up.
Thanks,
Mark

No, you do not need the old password. Also, don't mess around with /etc/shadow

Hmm. The man page refers to ~/.fetchmail.pid as the lock file; try
removing this before running fetchmail for a new server. Just make sure
that you don't try to access the same server twice, and I think you

If I don't remeber ti wrong, you have to recompile the kernal so that affs

fdisk only knows "windows" file systems and therefore thing the harddrive is

It's a non-DOS partition, use that option to delete it. However, if
you created the partition with a version of fdisk other than the DOS
version, you probably will not be able to delete it with the DOS
fdisk. In that case, you need to boot a linux floppy with
the linux fdisk on it, delete the partition, then boot a DOS floppy
and create a new partition.

Subject: problem in reading ReWritable CD
Date: Sun, 16 Apr 2000 10:38:20 -0700
I back up some document at work on a Maxell rewritable CD. I am able to
read there at work. But I cannot mount it on my linux box at home. It
complains that
"no medium is found"
I have tried both Juliet and iso9660 filesystem.
Then I back up the document on a recordable CD (also Maxell), I have no
problem.
Does anyone know why I can mount a recordable CD but not a rewritable
CD?

Because some CD drives don't like RW media?
>From the CDR FAQ at http://www.fadden.com/cdrfaq/:
These discs [CDRW] are not writable by standard CD-R drives, nor
readable by most older CD readers (the reflectivity of CD-RW is
far below CD and CD-R, so an Automatic Gain Control circuit is
needed to compensate). Most new CD-ROM drives do support CD-RW
media, but not all them will read CD-RW discs at full speed.
In short, it's most likely the fault of the drive you're trying to read
on. Replace it with a newer drive is probably your best bet.
